The placement of your equipment can have a profound effect on the sound quality. It depends largely on the equipment used, how critical YOU are and how careful other instructions in this series are carried out.

Excellent Video. I had a hearty laugh when you mentioned coins under the spikes. I had those till about 4 days ago when I replaced the coins with small rectangle wooden blocks under each spike. Sand Box sounds like a good idea, I will try to DIY it. Yes I am married and got a kid. :)

I think you said use lock-bolts below spikes, how can I fit these and what benefits do they offer? I have KEF Reference 5 & weigh around 62kg onto a natural wooden floor, room size is 8M x 8.2M. Thanks

According to Russ Andews, cone feet aren't trying to filter or decouple anything, they are trying to drain mechanical energy away from the chassis.

Thank you, very useful information as always. I knew some of the stuff you explained but not all. I am surprised that spikes do not reduce vibrations. I thought the idea was that with the minimal contact that the tip of the spikes achieves, the chance for vibration damage is reduced. I have no scientific knowledge about this subject but that theory made sense to me.
@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel
@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel 6 лет назад
Reducing the contact doesn't reduce the vibration not the transmission of it. It just have to travel through a smaller contact surface, increasing the force per square millimetre and so increasing the chance the spikes will damage the surface they stand on. They do work for loudspeakers placed on carpet, as I described, though.

@@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel i have custom design fs104 signature speaker stands, but before even putting spike or speakers on it i did this put 7.5kg of attacam attabites in the main column to reduce vibrations and then where my speakers sit i have 4 bigfoot isolation feet and then the spikes sit on shoes that have rubber feet from slipping and then i have the shoes sitting on carpet tiles but where the stands sit there is 2 carpet tiles. Is this a good solution

Excellent videos! Although I don't fully agree with your view on spikes, Hans. My room with wooden floor resonates on certain bass frequencies, making certain bass notes pop out (seem louder) than others. Spikes help by decoupling the speakers from the floor and it stops the room from resonating on certain freqs.
@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel

That’s the story but did you really compare that and if so, against what.

@@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannelHi Hans, there is a clear difference when i use or not use spikes with the same speakers on the exact same spot, same volume levels etc. That is all the proof I need. 😄
@bliiblaablue
@bliiblaablue 3 года назад
I never measured this with REW! but my ears told me the same when I had similar issue. I’ve been using gardening concrete blocks underneath the speakers with bitum between concrete and the floor, no need for spikes anymore apparently..

Dear Hans, another very interesting video, as always. Still, on the subject of audio degradation. A friend of mine has raised a question which I would like to ask you. Have you looked into the detrimental effects (if any) of RF interference on audio equipment when using such items as: Powerline Wi-Fi adaptors and the effect of neon bulbs in mains adaptors? Also, can "SMPS" a switch mode power supply in an amplifier etc have a detrimental effect on other pieces of equipment in the system? Thanking you. Rodney.
@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel
@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel 6 лет назад
RF interference should theoretically not have a profound effect on proper designs. In practice it does to some degree, though. You can simply test this by switching off those devices that cause RF (Cell phones, wifi, Bluetooth and so on) that you have control over. If you hear no difference, you're ok. If not, check for 'leaks' that allow RF to get to the audio signal. Good quality shielded cables do a lot - start with the power cables, than interconnects and then the speaker cables. Cheap SMPS's, like the wall wart types, do a lot of harm. Quality SMPS's can be rather good. So again, it's not the working principle, nor the components inside, it's the design.

Many thanks for all your fantastic videos, and I hope you can answer one question: are bookshelf speakers generally designed to be coupled or decoupled from a stand? I have a pair or B&W DM602 and I’m trying to add mass to stand and couple it through the thin carpet to the floor with spikes, but wouldn’t it then make sense to decouple the speakers from the stands? What would you recommend to someone that basically is trying to keep costs down to as close to zero as possible? Many thanks in advance, and keep up with your great work!!!
@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel
@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel 3 года назад
That might differ per speaker model. I have no hands-on experience with the B&W you mentioned so I can't say.

@@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel many thanks for your reply. There is so much contradictory information about coupling/decoupling that it makes my head spin trying to find a proper, scientific answer or method to follow... So far coupled stands and small (very small) rolls of bike inner tube tied with elastic bands seems the best solution I have tried, with excellent imaging and decent bass response... But I know that based in some ideas this is a ridiculous solution!!! 🤦🏻‍♂️

They had already gobo’s back in the day. But the leakage forced the engineers to carefully place instruments, gobo’s and mikes.

I have only a wooden cabinet to place my monitors on, how can i reduce vibrations? I have thought about buying two marble plinths for the monitors to sit on. Would this help or do you have another recommendation?
@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel
@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel 6 лет назад
It is virtually impossible to give advise for a specific situation. In general mass will absorb vibrations and marble is pure mass.

I've been watching your videos for sometime and they are fantastic....i have a question if you are interested in answering it i jave a pair of McIntosh LS350 and there's know spikes on them or anything do you think if i just got a peace of carpet to put under them would it help or do you have a better idea?? I have a emotive xpa 2 gen 3 and I have a audio stand and I put the amp in the stand and it did sound very good but when I place it on floor it seemed to sound much better so I bought a amp stand and when I put it on the amp stand the sound wasn't good but the amp stand has spikes and again im dealing with tile floors!!! Please help if you can with some better ideas THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME AND INPUT......WHEN YOU DO A VIDEO THERE IS NOT ANOTHER PERSON ON RU-vid WHO EXSPLAINS IT AS Thorough as you do !!!

Hello Hans. Firstly many thanks for the reliable audio-knowledge base. I have a question about the anti-vibrating shelf You talked about at 7:33 of this video. You said: "what will work is a shelf of two planks with a layer of led in between." What do You mean by "led". In translations to polish, i found only a LED- light emitting diode, and it doesn't seem right translation for me. Maybe You misspelled the word "felt"? Do You think a sturdy, inert sheet of rubber, between the wooden planks, will work too? I'll be grateful for your response. Have a good day! Aleksander Kaźmierczak
