How I usually go about it: If you hear it, it's too much. Put just enough, so that you miss it when you bypass it. That's the sweet spot usually. Unless you are doing 80s stuff :P

I guess I'm one of the few that love the sound of reverb, especially in metal records. Slayer Hell Awaits, Bathory The Return....., Venom Black Metal, Protector Protector of Death demo, Dark Angel Darkness Descends ect were all records that had a dark sound to them and reverb is a big reason for it. That's the sound I'm looking for really.

Dry mixes are one of the many things I don't like about modern metal records, right up there with autotune, fake drums, and amp sims.

reverb kills your ability to play technical/fast. I have not added anything cept distortion to my music since i stopped being a noob tho i mess with other peoples tones sometimes these days. I used to use chorus to mask how untalented/boring i was when i was a noob which i think is why bands do that generally . Like he says in a dense mix its your enemy. just fucks up technical shifts and fast playying. for nirvana and most pop music it would be really shitty and boring without a bunch of production effects

Niklas Antichrist What is a "dry" mix exactly? Sorry I'm new to this.
@marcorodriguez7694
@marcorodriguez7694 5 лет назад
Shawn Jones I think it depends. Add reverb to an album from bands like Decrepit Birth or Cannibal Corpse it defeats the purpose of that particular subgenres of death metal. Add reverb to albums from Merciless Death, Sodom and early Morbid Angel it adds darkness to the album which is what I like.

@@marcorodriguez7694 I feel the same way. I love the old school reverb sound of Slayer and Sodom. Btw a dry mix is no fx/minimal fx on a mix.

I like reverb on clean vocals, it's easy to overdo, but sometimes it's the secret to blending the vocal in to the rest of a track so it won't feel as though it's sitting on top of everything. Not a fan at all on screams though. One of the first producers I ever worked with as a screamer was pretty new to recording himself, and he had recently read an article about how reverb is a "must have" effect on all vocal tracks. Now, as I said, I actually sort of agree with that on clean vocals because in a lot of cases reverb can actually help those, but when you put reverb on screams, it sounds like the vocalist is on one side of a train tunnel, and the mic is on the other end.

To any of those doubters or people who have accused glenn of not knowing what hes talking about, listen to this video if nothing else. With this type of indie/grungy song, it would be all too easy to crank everything up, so particularly in the chorus, youd get a messy blast of noise. Yet this example demonstrates perfectly how to have everything going on with ample room to breathe. Just listen to the song, and concentrate on any particular instrument. You should have no problem picking it out. Nicely done glenn. And im loving that abbey road plugin. As an old fart who grew up with the beatles, its pure nostalgia to me.

Great tips Glenn. I would add one little caveat that reverb use on certain elements can be genre specific as well. Like a ballad, especially in the chorus, tends to receive more treatment to swell the intensity of delivery of the hook. Example: Open Arms by Journey or Don't Close Your Eyes by KIX.

I often miss the sound of older records. They utilised effects to a great extent. Many of the black metal classics had heavy reverb on lots of the tracks. As an eksample i really love the sound that Swanö did on Dissections Storm Of The Lights Bane. But it is ultimately a matter of taste and preference of course. Cheers from Denmark 🤘

I personally increase the pre delay time on the snare reverb so it doesn't affect the punch of it. You can really push the pre-delay far back and it sounds great that way.

Really great video Glen. FX like reverb and delay can make or break the overall feel of a song. If it is used artistically it can work amazingly well to project the emotion of the performance. If used incorrectly it can cause an otherwise great performance to sound fake and dull. Please loosen up the gate on your vocal naration mic. It's cutting the ends off your words and making it sound a bit choppy...just give it maybe a couple more milliseconds of time before it clamps down and the choppiness will go away. It was a bit distracting listening to the gate grabbing during this vid. It's OK to have the odd breath noise or even a tiny bit of ambient room noise coming across in your voice audio as it makes it easier to listen to rather than a gate clamping down too quickly. Your voice audio is absolutely fantastic already and so giving it a bit of "breathing room" is just fine.

I typically roll off both the lows and highs going into a reverb-learned that from a Dave Pensado vid-and then after the reverb, add a compressor with the dry signal as a sidechain to duck down the verb so it's only at full volume after the dry signal gets quiet-learned that from a Warren Huart vid. (Don't worry. I've learned a bunch of stuff from watching Glenn's vids, too. Yuk fu, Glenn!)

Something woth mentioning here are grain cloud effects. Both delay and reverb have a long history in recording, but grain clouds have come up relatively recently (early 2000s was when they became usable) and as a result they are rarely discussed. But they occupy an instersting spot, where a low number of grains sounds pretty close to something you could get from a delay (say up to ~10 grains) and high numbers of grains are pretty reverb-like (maybe starting at 150 grains or so), leaving a range that doesn't leave as much of a rhythmic imprint as a delay would, while not making things quite as muddy as reverb can do. There are some free VSTs (Argotlunar, Boids), a Eurorack module (Mutable Instruments Clouds, also available for free via VCV rack) and then there is the paid VST SaltyGrain and NI Reaktor was one of the first products that could do grain clouds (and thus you get a few ensembles and instruments in the user library).

Lately I've been adding reverb to double-tracked guitars but with the reverb on the opposite panning from its source track, i.e. left-panned guitar gets a reverb on the right and vice versa. I have the reverb fader spretty low around -18dB or lower. It gives the guitars some space and makes it sounds like they're in a real room instead of sounding very artificial when panned hard-left or hard-right.

Yeah, it sounds really nice and after starting using it I just can't go back to plain hard-panned guitars anymore. I think of it like adding a room mic to a close-miced amp and panning the room mic opposite of the close mics.

@TorontoPopulistConservative
@TorontoPopulistConservative 3 года назад
How does that reverb on the low end sound? Do you EQ out the lows before the reverb?
@brandimakesmusic
@brandimakesmusic 3 года назад
The lower reverb pretty much helps with adding a bit more depth and air to your kick drum but you wanna make sure that you add it last on a bus track and mix it in. If you have too much reverb it'll muddy up the rest of the mix. And putting it on the bus track allows you to mix the kick how you want with EQ and compression without worrying about whether you should put the reverb first or not

If you want a reverb to be less "obvious" and more natural sounding, roll off a bunch of top end after the reverb. If you want it more obvious, leave the top end in place. If the reverb is stepping on the vocal too much, increase the pre-delay. I think I've seen CLA do like 150ms on vocals. What I've been doing a lot lately if I need to make space on a vocal or something is more delay than reverb! This is a nice trick that's a bit less washy than reverb.

@deanolium
@deanolium 5 лет назад
Reverse reverb is relatively simple, but a little labour intensive. You basically need to first reverse the track you want the reverb on. Then you bus that to a new track and add the reverb plugin to that. Next render down just that reverbed track, before reversing both that and the vocal track. This should make the vocal track forwards again, but now the reverbed track will lead into the vocals.

FYI: if you use room mics and you want to make the room sound specific amount larger, say you have a the mics 2m away and you want it to sound like they were 8m away; put a really dry room reverb on the track. Each time you double the distance (2->4->8) cut the top end by 3dB with a shelf. Adding 6 meters distance you need to put some predelay on it. The formula in is distance/speed of sound*ms per second. So in this case you would cut the top end by 6dB and use 16.3ms predelay (6/363*1000=16.3ms).

Oh dear. People focusing more on the character of the vocals rather than what Glenn had to say about reverb. I get it. I didn't like the vocal tracks here either, but the point isn't his/her nasality or off pitch harmonies. The fact is how to cautiously use reverb on vocals. And I think the video does a good job to get that bit of message across (even though some people may have missed the said message).
