Today, we are going over the basics of mixing bass! The song in today's episode is "The Owl Song" by Me and the City.
This song has a bass DI. - A bass guitar plugged straight into the front of the interface.
In areas it gets super loud and then it disappears, so its dynamic range is massive! This is very typical for most bass guitar performances.
I’m going to show you a couple of different approaches that I take while mixing bass guitars!

How about going over different techniques for reverb send fxs, i.e. like using multiple reverbs to create a space, and how you go about processing the reverb sends, which elements you send to which send, and how you control the overall space in regards to each element within the mix? Would really love to see you do an in depth video covering this overall topic and these questions included of course. Thanks for everything you do Warren, your videos are very much appreciated, can't thank you enough for the work you do on this channel!

Thank you so much😊. I am writing this so that i dont forget 😅 ---‐--------------------------------------------------------- Record 1 DI. Make 2 duplicate copies. So total 3 copies. Copy 1: Low passed to make the low frequency cut through and compressed to make them consistent. Copy 2: Hi passed to bring out the character and compressed to make them consistent. Copy 3: Heavily distorted because this will make the peaks smooth so no transient boom will be there. Now all three send to Bass-bus. In Bass-bus, again EQ followed by compression. EQ: Hi pass to make space for kick around 60 Hz with a 12db/octave slope. 12db/octave because while boosting 80hz, it will have lesser boost on 60hz. Boost sweet spots (80, 800, 1200 1500 according to taste) Finally adjust the level of 3 DI to get desired ballance of bass proper, character and distortion. _____________________________________ Additional info: 1. 300 to 700 is muddy area for bass. Get rid of that frequency in Bassbus Eq if it doesn't change the character too much. 2. Create 'Bass pocket' around 100 to 200 Hz and boost bass in that area (the bass-buss eq). 3. To create pocket reduce 100 to 200 hz in other interfering instruments like Kick rhythm guitar piano etc. 4. Get rid of other non contributing parts (Band pass and high cut filter). Getting rid of these unnecessary frequency will make the mix crisp and it will also decrease LUFS and so the mastered version of the song will be able to get more loud without hitting above 16 LUFS.

Oh my goodness, this is GOLD! I followed your steps, and I never knew my bass could sound so good! The mids bring out the sheen, that "grain" we hear like when we strike a low note on a piano. And the bottom just BLOOMS - it's got that rubbery heft I love to hear. I can mix the two to suit the tune - just incredible. Thank you, Warren!

So awesome that I instinctively created a “Bass Sandwich 🥪”, consisting of Low-end DI sound, Bass Amp mid-range, and Bass Distortion for top end, and I get amazing results. Joe Barresi, Warren Huart, many producers take the same approach. One sound? No problem. Duplicate it 3 times, buss them together, treat 1 low, 1 mid, and 1 high, and viola, you got a Multi-Band Bass Sandwich that covers all the basses’

It has been without doubt the best decision I have ever made to go (I'm a mature student ) and the reason I decided to do this 3 year degree was purely down to the inspiration and knowledge I got from you and your channel. I would just like to say thank you so much for this video. I've always had problems mixing bass, partially from my performance because I'm not really a bass player by trade, so the source is a tad shonky, but just mixing it in general and this video has helped me so, so much. I'm still far from perfect but I'm light years closer than what it was previously. So again, thank you very much :)

Best video on the Internet… I’m guessing bass is the hardest instrument to mix because it’s pretty unique from all other instruments. It’s pitch is heard, it changes pitch, and its energy is felt…you can literally feel the low rumbling with your body. No other instrument can claim all three of those qualities. The kick is heard and felt but it doesn’t change pitch. Guitars are heard and change pitch but they’re not felt, same with vocals and keyboards. To keep the base’s energy consistent, it has to be processed in parallel…almost like two separate instruments. You can’t have it’s low-end power fading/woofing out, but you can’t lose the dynamics of its upper range either.

If I may suggest, try to set the blend of your bass tracks first before you start compressing and limiting the Bass Aux group. That way you won't find yourself having to re-tweak the threshold/settings on the Aux. I've never tried using a third bass track, normally just a LP/DI and a HP/Grit tracks, but I will remember to give this a try. Thanks ever so much Warren!

necks on basses can add to this problem, where some notes are very resonant... also frets... if the frets arent dressed properly you get drop outs.. certain keys seem to be more even than others... i like to get my bass set up and with new-ish strings and a clean fretboard when im recording bass... often i might double it with a synth bass and blend in the electronic signal... also when recording one might want to compress lightly and use a nice preamp to drive the signal a bit.. i use a Great River pre with is quite versatile... thanks for your awesome-warren tips too!

Warren, you are too kind of a spirit! Giving away such valuable tricks for free!. I've used similar ideas before, but usually i'm so worried about bringing up too much noise in the mix, so i tend to avoid compression as much as i can and do manual volume automations instead or melodyne (not that anybody would probably ever notice the difference!!). I gave up using DIs for bass players 20 years ago, even for live performances. I don't miss them for a second. Amps are an important part of any musician's sound. Why isn't a bass player important enough to have the same control over the sound as a guitarist? Most of the mixing tips here are basically what an amp does any way. I recently installed a transformer-coupled XLR jack in the back of my bass amp for sound guys who refuse to use a mic. It's post-power amp with a resonant low-pass circuit at 2.5K and HPF at 60Hz. I still prefer a mic but it's mich better than a little box of "boring".

That was amazing. You've got me really thinking about limiting after compression with essentially the same settings apart from ratio and threshold. In this serial compression scenario the low ratio compressor really works hard to tame the transients so that the limiter doesn't have to work hard. That's how you avoid massive distortions from the limiter in the mid range, which belongs to the other tracks. Am I right? Where did I leave the tracks of sanity? Thank you so much!

I've followed your bass guitar, guitar, drums, vocals mixing tips. Thanks so much for mixing my songs! Lmao Hear me out folks: this is the BEST channel on RU-vid on sound engineering, and I've taken my first course in real life more than ten years ago for a couple of years. Because of my old CPU I had to create two/three submixes per song but boy, *you should hear the goddamn results*

Here is what I do. If anyone has further suggestions, share please, for my sake as well. First record in M/S configuration to get a wide stereo image that folds down well to mono. Now the mix. If it's a rhythm guitar being strummed, in EQ, shelf cut everything below 3-5K by around +/- 6dB, until you feel it blends in with hi-hats, shaker or other hi-Hz rhythmic components. Hi-pass anywhere from 80 to 1K depending on how much room there is in the mix. You might want to boost the upper shelf by a few dB as well if it's a darker sounding instrument. You can add a harmonic exciter instead. Compress at ratio of between 3 and 5 (:1) with around a 20-40ms attack time (depending on the aggressiveness of the strumming). Drop the threshold until you get around -6dB reduction. I like to set release to the tempo of the song [i.e. 120bpm = 500ms 1/4note, so I might set attack+release = 125ms (1/16 note, w/ say 25ms attack and 100ms release), or even 75ms total (1/32 note) for a more aggressive feel]. Keep the gain low enough that the strumming reinforces but does not completely mask the hi-hats. If it is just guitar and voice, you will take a different approach. After your vocals sound the way you want, use a spectrum analyzer to see what frequencies overlap between guitar and voice and make the appropriate cuts to the guitar to unmask the voice. You can boost the guitar where there is no competition, particularly the very low and very high Hz. Don't hi-pass, or if you do, keep it under 50Hz. If you boost the guitar anywhere in order to bring out it's natural character, make the corresponding cut to the voice. The tracks should fit together like jigsaw pieces. Compress only to the degree that the volume swells (better player will need less or no compression). If the consistency in volume is very bad, you might want to experiment with very low compression ratios (like ~1.2:1) with low threshold (like -40dB) to flatten the dynamics rather than chop the peaks. I often have two compressors going on the track, or a low-ratio compressor and let the bus compression handle the peaks. A bit of saturation before compression on any instrument helps reduce peaks and creates dynamic consistency with gentler compression. It really depends on the sound and feel you are going for. If you are mixing fingerpicked guitar, it becomes much more complicated as you will probably want to make several narrow cuts to tame certain notes that ring out stronger, especially on a 12-string.

On my bass pedalboard, I put my MXR compressor before my Sans Amp and other pedals because I want to send a consistent signal to FOH so they don't have to worry too much about compression. Other bass players often will put the compressor at the end of the signal chain, but I prefer mine at the beginning. Great video on the work it takes to get a good bass tone in recording.
