The state of Virginia secretly recorded electric chair executions in the 80’s and early 90’s. By chance, some of these tapes landed in a public building. After a lengthy court battle, 4 of these recordings have been officially made available to the public. This is one of them.

A lot of people have been asking where they can find all of the audios. Most of them have been released by npr on their website. If you pop in “npr execution tapes” in a search engine, it should be the first or second to pop up. I just tried it. You just have to scroll to the bottom of the page to find the audios.

Being able to hear the first surge of electricity was eerie but fascinating at the same time. Fascinating in the sense that not everyone has ever or will ever hear that sound in their lives. It’s a sound you can’t explain and the only way to understand the sound is to hear it for yourself.

Richard Boggs murdered his 87 year old neighbor in Portsmouth on January 25, 1984. After having struck and killed a pedestrian during a hit and run accident earlier that day, Boggs went to Shaw's house on the pretense of borrowing a book. After having the third cup of tea offered by Shaw, Boggs hit her over the head with a round hunk of steel. She was knocked unconscious by the blow, but continued to breathe. Boggs went into her kitchen, where he picked up a butcher knife and fatally stabbed her in the heart. Police questioned Boggs about the crime a month later, where they found silver stolen from Shaw's house in his vehicle when he was arrested for the hit and run accident committed earlier on the day of the murder.

I'll update my original comment. I'm an amateur psychic, with an affinity for stories like these. Upon realizing that Boggs likely suffered more than the others during his electrocution, I did a little digging into his past. During his walk, he fainted and had to be carried to the chair, realizing that it was really happening. In his time, he was the kind of man who wandered the world in jackboots and leather, he was abusive and cruel, he never did anything productively, he used drugs to cover all the deficiencies of life that occurred due to his poor decisions, which led him to drugs. Prior to killing his neighbor, who he asked to borrow a book from and served him tea three times before he bludgeoned over the head and murdered her with a knife multiple times with, he committed a hit and run, killing some unnamed pedestrian, likely an unnamed because they were homeless. Nevertheless, it sent Boggs into a panic, as he sought to buy even more drugs to cover the stress of his previous hit-and-run homicide. In his desperation, he sought out his neighbor, Shaw. He sat with her and had tea three times, alluding to his need of money...but it was to buy more drugs. She denied his request for money, but gave him three cups of tea and offered all the friendship she had to offer Boggs. However, for Boggs and his desperate situation of having just killed someone with his car, he wanted drugs and he wanted them now.........Except Shaw was saying she didn't have it go give.........But Boggs, in his desperation, could see more than enough in her home to cover his needs............... Need I say more?

It's always described as "carrying the inmate to the execution chamber" he's not being physically carried he's walking. He stepped out of the cell and he was escorted to the execution chamber he wasn't carried. Inaccurate descriptive used.

@earl4989
@earl4989 5 месяцев назад
What makes this one especially gruesome is when they first start the execution, at 7:34, you can hear the apparatus of the electric chair, straining as it struggled to rip the current through Bogg's body. Then you hear a faint click, click, click, as the transformer used generates more power to kill him. You can even see the transformer used in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XGQ6GpXInpE.html, at 7:34 also. The clicking noise was each of those bushing on top, firing lightening into his body. All of this happened because Boggs was a poor conductor of electricity, which also means he likely suffered more than the other executions.
@markboyle9941
@markboyle9941 5 месяцев назад
I doubt it. The apparatus shown in that video was part of a GE Limitamp system; these were medium to high voltage motor start/run controllers. The clicking is on the phone line, it's definitely not the sound of a transformer tap-changer. GE did provide the system for Virginia's chair so the Limitamp may have been used to run a motor generator set (3ph AC to single phase AC) the sound of which loading down maybe what you are hearing.
@earl4989
@earl4989 4 месяца назад
@@markboyle9941 Yes, it was a GE Limitamp but when the switch was thrown, the leanness of the 27 year-old skinny body provided a situation that wasn't ideal to conduct electric. Whatever it was, it was definitely something to increase to voltage to make it what it's supposed to be. At any rate, you can audibly hear it blasting him, whatever it was. And it was regulated by the GE Limitamp, because after the button was pushed, you could audibly hear the machinery struggling to maintain 2500 volts, which is how the machinery would behave, regardless of if it's a human body as a conduit or a piece of copper wire.

In this case it does seem pretty apparent that he was guilty. Unfortunately, there have been numerous cases where innocent people have been put to death. "The death penalty carries the inherent risk of executing an innocent person. Since 1973, at least 197 people who had been wrongly convicted and sentenced to death in the U.S. have been exonerated." So sometimes it really isn't as simple as "don't commit crimes".
