I sort of prefer the English versions though I understand they were not recorded live. I would love to hear a professional recording of these songs in Japanese. I very well understand that it's not easy to sing while you're jumping around the stage.
There are the English demo tracks of Death Note The Musical you can listen to, but the instrumentation of the songs are different and the original English lyrics range from pretty ok to frustratingly simple (like a lot of Frank Wildhorn musicals are with Jack Murphy as the lyricist).
I don’t understand how people love the English or other vers better, it’s not like they’re less good but this feels like the original for me, very like giving vibes of the series and feeling. Idk like how people don’t like it lol but it’s just my opinion
The English version is the original and musically better. You can jam to it more because there is no musical or dialogue break. As for the story. I will admit this stays more true to the original better. But we are listening to a musical and are more likely to be trying to jam to the music afterwards, not just watching it over and over like it's an anime. That is why people like it better. It just sounds better musically.
I like both this version and the English version quite a lot. But upon listening to the English version of this song, and the Japanese version (this one) of this song, I think I'd have to say I prefer the English. Firstly, I think that the actors for this song are absolutely amazing in everyway, however their ranges seem limited. For instance, Misa's actor which I can't remember the name of as of right now, has a softer, more timid voice. However, with the New York cast, the actor for her has a stronger voice. I think the purpose of Misa in this song was for her to long for Light's attention, but the actor sort of made her seem like she was really just,,, there. Like her lines were just lines. She sung them sort of blandly in my opinion. Secondly, I feel like the audio's pretty inconsistent. Sometimes it feels like it's just dubbed over. That's just my opinion, though.
GTP Seriesss + Even so, I still don't think their voices match up to the standards of something like Broadway. Even in the live recordings of musicals like Rent or Phantom of the Opera, the singers’ voices still sound strong and they hit all the notes, but here, the singers’ voices are rather weak and they go out of tune in some parts. Also, the Korean version is live too but they don't have the same weaknesses that I see here, so I don't really think being live excuses it.
