This video helped me decide to buy mine 6 months ago. When referencing my tracks on ear buds and in my car I find that the high end response is pretty similar across the board. But the bass response is when it differs a little. Often when I find a good bass level in my daw, it sounds a little loud in my car and ear buds. I'm not saying this is a draw back! This is why you should always listen to your music on different speakers. I for one love m40xs.
Just wanted to say thank you Podcastage, I have used your reviews before buying all my audio gear and because of that have made sound choices and more than happy with what I have. Love your no gimmick style and concise, factual reviews. Wishing you a mighty fine day :)
I thought my brain was broken as there was rattling in the audio near the end and I've just spent the last 3 hours having epileptic fits. Damn I thought my brain was well and truly broken hahaha
Had mine a year, really like the sound. I agree with pretty much everything you said, good review. One thing that happens after 7-8 months is they start to creak really badly. When listening to something on low volume like a tv show, any slight movement to my head and it creaks. It's a really bad issue, not sure if I was just unlucky.
Good review of these headphones, they look new, mine are not, had them for about three years and like them, however had to super glue on the swivel due to breaking about a year ago and the other side broke today and was looking for another brand to replace the ATH MX40x. I have two other headphones (MDR 7506 & MDR V6) but the ATH MX40x give a different color when mixing so its a good reference. I was about to buy another brand looking at reviews and landed on your review, so I super glued these a second time and it worked. The ATH MX40x's are really nice sounding headphones. One other issue with these is the ear pads do not last and the headband will lose its coating. They are a keeper.
i'm very glad to hear that! i am about to buy a pair and was a bit iffy because i can't really afford buying $120 headphones every other year, but if they last that long i am relieved
Please answer 🙏🙏 I have a confusion that can I use it for long session? Because I don't have studio monitors so the mixing mastering will be on it.. pls answer me because you can answer it correctly because 7 years is a long time.
I first wanted to buy the m40x but I decided to buy the m50x insted because of the better build quality and the slightly cleaner high frequencies :) Good video :) Can you please review m20x and m30x soon? :)
@@firegangg headphones still going strong, they’ve been in my booth for a year at least as I’ve moved to open backs for mixing , still really good quality for the money They get used and abused and still working
When the reviewing the M50s you made very clear you felt a great lack of highs on them. On the M40s you say highs are great! Are they so different after all?
Awasome video . Thanks for the review. I'm confused which one to chose Audio-Technica ATH-M40x or Sennheiser HD 598 CS Closed Back . May you suggest me which one is better in the same price?
Lately, I have been doing a lot of live stream interviews on Facebook Would you recommend these for this type of work? If not, what would you recommend?
Im about to buy a pair of headphones for music production and amateur mixing/mastering and I have 3 options at the same price in my area: Beyer dynamics DT990, Audio Technica ATH40X and the AKG 240 Studio, wich one would recomend for the task? It really matters if its open/closed back? I've already have closed back ones for recording, i just want the best sound quality for the money
i bought this headset today and the reason i came to this video is to see what the coiled cable is used for because i was super confused but then i had another look and figured out that you can take off the first part of the plug and so you can use the coiled cable instead of that big ass cable that you would use
I think people might get the "proprietary mount" part wrong. yes it has this mount but there are many brands on amazon that make cable fro this headphone you don't have to buy from ATH
First off, loved the commercial bit, that was entertaining. Second thanks for the review, ive actually been considering getting a pair of headphones for monitoring, ive been using some Sennheiser HD 202 headphones and they just don't hold up on sound quality or comfort in my opinion.
2:26 -- Oh, damn. That's what I suspected. Great review. I cannot believe the number of RU-vid reviewers that completely FAIL to mention a proprietary connection. I'm sorry my V-Moda Boompro + AT-m50x (or m40x) plans just fell through.
I know. For that price, I'm supposed to just go ahead and buy the AudioTechnica PG1Gaming Headset...but there are tons of m50x and m40x out there for cheep on craigslist
oh shit son - we made this exact purchase a few weeks back... agreed very decent.. not outstanding but very decent - worth the price in our book - good review
Just got mine out the box and came to this video to make sure i wasnt going crazy with the direction of the earcup rotation, no idea why they thought that was a good idea
Would love to see you review the Senheiser HDR 160, almost nobody has put out a review for them and being someone who can't stand headphone cables, i think they are the best wireless headphones under $200.
Just got my M40X today. The cable plug was hard to remove, the lock is weird, will take time to get used to it. It is strange why they made it only one side swivel in this, how much cost would that take? Yet if we wanna put them close to chest we can wear it reverse R to L side. It is amazing however the pleather cups are uncomfortable, Hopefully my ears get used to it and they become soft in time. I'd say if you can spend more money go for DT770 or 880 which is double the price of this. In India i got it for very low (7.5K Rupees) for discounts but we don't have this much discount for Beyerdynamic making it really double the price compared to this. You should write to Audio-Technica requesting them to improve the ear cups like Beyerdynamic, it will be worth it. I didn't buy the Beyerdynamic because of the price but also because I saw in reviews about the harsh sibilance in the highs, my ears are very sensitive, but I would buy them if i get the money for it. I saw no such complain about M40X in all the reviews, they are perfect for budget, studio professional work.
Lol lol lol
Which one would you recommend for long session and comfort. I am confused between Sony MDR 7506 and Audio Technica M40X. Audio quality is not my priority. Comfort is my main focus for long sessions. Thank you in advance!
I want to put a shorter detachable cable for casual listening. Can I buy any kind without affecting the sound quality? Does Audio-Tech make smaller cables?
2:27 What do you mean? Can't I replace the cable with a normal 2.5 to 3.5 if it breaks or something? Because if this is the case then it's a deal breaker.
I would like to buy them, but I am afraid what you said about the mids. I need a mids in a headphones for clarity. is there any please? and thank you this review is great
I have M-Audio air 192/6 interface and it is written headphone output 10ohm. I consider to buy this headphone to plug in my sound card. I wonder does this headphone give louder sound or not?
Don't know why but on my v-drum TD-17KV with a splitter I found the volume dropped with another head phone plugged in. The other one it was normal. If I have 2 of my others plugged in they never loose the volume.
I have a pair of these, and my roommate has the m50x's and having compared them extensively, I agree with what he said about the mids. The m50s also sound a bit smoother overall, and I would prefer them for media consumption, the difference in preference is almost negligible for me (and I have Reinkus Heinz 15" mainspeakers in my living room.)
I don't think I've used the M30x's before so I cannot speak to that. I would highly recommend checking out the headphone review channels like Headphone Show, DMS, Crinacle, to name a few because they may have this discussion on their channel and they can speak much more intelligently and in depth about them.
Any headphones that was considered had a good sound quality could be use for gaming. Sound is a subjective thing but the m40x was flat and not bassy ish. If you're purpose was for gaming, listening to music or watching films and another 50 bucks wasn't a problem then get the m50x instead
Tu parle trop vite et tu n’as pas expliqué mieu cette histoire de câble prioritaire. Peut t’on quand même brancher un câble acheter dans le commerce si on veut le remplacer ? Merci pour ta réponse.
@@blaidd-ppga i don't have the m50x but i heard they're more comfortable than the M40X,you could still get the m40x and change the pads if you don't mind for more comfort
Sonofabyss yeah the 250 ohms are crystal, the 80 ohms are great all rounders. Have both and use the 80's for gaming and listening to anything but vinyl, 250's for vinyl and monitors (music production)
K- Flow I will never ever review any beats headphones. After listening a few sets once in a store I have written them off. I can’t stand super bass heavy headphones. Yuck.
i like them for recording , you can use them to mix but there is quite a lot of bass , so if you want to mix with something more neutral , beyrdynamic dt 770 might be better
@@lisca.2000 yes they will work but the maximum volume might be a bit low , i only have the 250 and with my mobile phone the sound is low , 80 will have a higher volume and 32 even more , so i think the 32 might be the better choice in your case
these things really feel like open back headphones... i can hear literally everything outside of the headphones and i cant hear my audio at all. they sound nice when people arent shouting or playing a piano next to my head though so that's nice i guess... edit: the not hating on piano music but when its the same 3 songs played over and over again through out the day every day for 4 years it makes me want to burn the piano and shred all the music books (that aren't used anyway because the player has alzhimers and cant read anymore)
