*Audio-Technica ATH-M40x Review* ***** takes a look at the Audio-Technica ATH-M40x. Sure they’re cheaper, but do they live up to the expectations set by the more well-known ATH-M50 series? Read the article here: goo.gl/2HdNSq

I have the m40x and I listen to music, play games, watch movies n all of them sound great. The bass is just about perfect, it is tight and punchy. I'm glad I got these instead of m50x
Bought these used for really cheap. I already had the older M50 but the right side went out. Honestly, I like the M40 more. The bass is less pronounced but tighter. The soundstage, OmG the soundstage is incredible for the price. The M50 almost had no soundstage and were at times too V shaped (narrow or less sound stake). Save some money and try the M40, you will be surprised.
lol aren't as good as m50x when in reality the m50x is a muddy, loose bass headphone with nasty murder treble and the m40x is actually a good set of cans
not subjective under the criteria of accuracy, sure if you want a bassy unclear sounding pair of cans in which sound is distorted go with the m50x's, if you want something neutral and clear sounding go with the m40x's. sure its subjective but when everyone with half a brain says go with the m40x's you know theres something wrong with the m50x's
Jason86906 they dont sound "really good" my old 30 dollar sennheisers beat them in every single way. my m50x may not stand a chance against some hd 650+ but the comparison between it and beats is like comparing a fucking doctor to a newborn about medical knowledge.
how can you look at studio monitors and say the bassy ones are better. the m50x have a slightly v shaped signature. these or almost perfectly flat. which means they are better for the intended purpose.
I was trying to find the best headphones with a detachable cord (I've broken the cords of tons of earbuds and have lost all trust in cords) and this seems like my best bet. Thanks for the review!
Panning shots are so annoying! They are like a picture and video combined, ONLY WORSE, because it's never completely in focus. Please use shots where the headphones take up the field of view, and then add static close up shots. Thank you.
3:55 “... because then what would be the point!?” Yeah, gee, that’s a great, objective argument that makes me feel totally confident in your comparative findings between the two 🤨
Fr, just because the m50x's are more money does not mean that they're automatically better than the m40x's 😂😂 For a lot of people producing, the m40x's are a no brainer because of the flatter frequency response rate. One is not better than the other, but rather, one is better than the other depending on how you like it to sound/the task at hand.
As a user of the ATH-M40fs for years (and before that a LOT of other ATH's) the BIGGEST problem is the ear-pads & headband. If you use your headphones a lot be prepared to spend $40+ to replace both once every year & a half. The start flaking, peeling, and basically disintegrating...the big flaw in an otherwise great product.
Yeah! agree! review them all!! M20x, M30x!!! I spent countless hour researching on this 4 headphone, would love to hear from their professional opinion.
***** In regards to your inquiry, ATH M30X soundstage-wise and quality sounded quite similar to ATH M20X . There's absolutely no different at all( unless you're going to powering the M30X with a decent amp/decent DAC). I asked one of the seller about the sound comparison and he said that it was absolutely similar to each other. He did demo the unit and listening to it attentively. After he gave it a few times of listening, he comes up to the conclusion that the M30X headphone is not worthy to be sold at the current price, so he just throw it away at a price similar to m20x. From there onwards, he is no longer interested to order the said product and stick with M20X, M40X AND M50X. Ahh I forgot to mentions this as well, that in between m40x and m50x the differences is quite subtle with M50X has a slighter bass boost compared to m40x but that is easily fixable with a good headphone amp even with a low budget DAC will do the bidding in boosting up the bass if you're into that. P.S : I know my English sounds kinda peculiar but I hope you understand what am I trying to say. :D
A flat pair of headphones like this would be great for me, especially because I'm a heavy user of graphic EQs on my music. This won't color the sound and will let me judge for real about how good the music will sound with [x frequency at x db]
thanks for the review, you did such a nice job! also thanks for test playing Grant Green - Iron City. you introduced me to an amazing artist I didn't know before. cheers!
I just ordered a new pair of these on eBay for $100. This is my first time every spending that much for headphones and I hope they sound very good for hip-hop music. Tbh I don’t really like too much bass, I like clarity. Still waiting for them to be delivered. Also how big is the box? Like is it a shoe sized box?
If you're after an enjoyable, fun sounding headphone, go for the Crossfade LP, hands down. The M40X (from reviews, anyway) are a much more suited towards studio use. I personally own a pair of LP2s, and they are absolutely enjoyable to listen to! You won't regret it. :D
The M40X sould be the more expensive and better headphone. This is the "monitor" series of Audio Technica and the M40X are one of the most flat headphones i've ever heard. The M50X can be more fun, but the M40 is the more mature headphone. There are other great choices like Sony V6 or MDR 7506 and Shure 440, but the M40X i believe is actually the best monitor headphones you can get at this price.
I listen to mostly heavy distorted stuff (death metal, sludge, etc) so the bass is more than enough for me and the clarity and detail is perfect. I was wondering if there's any iem with a similar sound like the ATH-M40X under $150 bucks?
cloud wave I'm reffering to how EDM and rock sound on the pair. Let me explain. The M40X are no good unless you have a good built in amp and Dac in you're phone. Which I can assume you're phone must have. Without these component's. The Volume is way to low even at full blast. And the bass is non existent.
I'm about to buy headphones but i don't which one between the Audio Technica ATH M40X and Seinheiser Urbanite XL... I want powerful sound with heavy/vibring bass and crisp/clear highs :/ please help me
I can't imagine anyone wanting more innate low end impact than this. No one listens to music without some kind of signal processor, not on phones, tablets, pcs etc. On a huawei P7 with just dts turned on these cans are pounding my head, but still clear in mids and highs, they are simply awesome!
I love how you say it won't add any distortion because some people will not know if its because if the song or the headphones and if its the song that has lofi distortion and not your headphones than you can not remove it. Some lofi sounds are bearable to my ears, but some are not especially from fake beats and 240p videos or extreme loud meme videos.
Do the mids in the 40x not sound more natural than the nasal induced 50x? IMO 50x is directly going against the Beats with more base than anything else, 40x is more neutral and balanced and give you what music should sound like without turning the eq in bass sky high
Can we increase the bass of m40x with an extrnal amplifier...if i want to listen songs for fun and entertainment purpose so can i increase the bass of m40x ?
They have a "weaker" bass because they have a smaller driver. But the 50s add bass which you do not want since for monitoring in studio you need the sound as flat as possible, which means the 40s are actually better in sound fidelity
What about movies? I was thinking of getting these or the HD518's. Would a narrower soundstage not give me the booming experience of a movie I'm chasing?
+leemcf4 No headphones can truly replicate the 5.1 Surround format that is used by all movies during production and in theaters. That being said, these are probably the best option, other than something with extended bass, such as the Beats by Dre line.
Try to connect my phone to it via bluetooth but doesn't work. Also having problems with big plug on small cable and coiled cable is wrapped around my neck help me please
Yes, but there is a lot more cheaper options if you plan to just use them for casual phone use. This is coming from some one who owns the m40x, great headphones! :D
im about to buy a pair of these, cant afford the m50x and although i do like my bass im not a major basshead and im hoping these can provide enough when im listening to EDM stuff. on the other hand i like a lot of heavy metal and i have heard these are great for that. can anybody give me some advice? are these gonna be bassy enough on EDM if i use custom EQ settings or should i get something else, baring in mind i cant afford anything more expensive.
Everywhere i read the bass isn't emphasized, but what if i use an eq(like the ones on iphone?i'm not searching for bass boost or something else, but i'm not even using them for mixing/mastering and i'd like to enjoy music also in a "funny" way
Wait, the audio port on the 40X is proprietary? If so that suuuucks, I just ordered a pair and I was planning on sticking one of these directly into that port but hadn't watched anyone else describe that input jack :( a.co/1maPM1C
Could some1 tell me, what should I pick - m40x or m50x? (please, I don't want answers from the owners of one of these headphones). I listen to rock I like pure vocal line and high basses (I've heard that in m50's are stronger but is it a big difference?) I want to buy headphones with perfect isolation - is here any gap? Thank you for Your answers
this m40x or dj adaro? or just get a m20x coz it is much cheaper, much difference? just listening music like edm and songs using my phone n pc, previous earphone is razer hammerhead but now it spoiled... thanks
bose soundlink headphone its better than this ATH- 40x,sony mdr 770 or even beats solo 2...the bose sound complete in well detailed well balance crisp mids..lows and the bass is amazing.
Would you recommend this over the Shure SRH440 headphones? only in terms of durability and sturdiness, i need them to monitor and record live music on locations. Thanks!
Honestly as a guy who never had a "profesional" pair of headphones. I can't tell any different in terms of the sound quality between m40x, m50x, and sennheiser hd202 ._." The fuck is wrong with me.. With that in mind, would you recommend this Headphone for me? I'm using it for gaming, and my music genre is rock, edm and hiphop.
It takes a lot of ear training to recognize a big difference. The differences are all really just how well the headphone can play low mid and high frequencys. It's not your fault man! :D Also really any type of headphone is good for gaming and casually listening to music so you dont need to be spending 300+ on some shit astro's
headphones with good soundstage are better for gaming than those who don't. But yeah, 99% gaming headsets are mostly just bad headphones with a mic attached (with gimmicks like 5.1/7/1 surround sound). That being said, I think the sennheiser game one/zero are good all round
I just received these headphones yesterday and the sound quality is good but they are most uncomfortable I've ever had...they feel heavy on my head...the only reason I'll keep these is for sound quality...
Does flat frequency or the neutrality u r talking about in the M40x headphones means that 1) bass audible in the original music will be cut out and it will sound flat OR 2) that it will not add anything on its own and give u original music(like if the bass is there in the original music it will be audible in the headphones and not ADD extra bass)?
+Devbrat Taparia It will not add anything. You'll just hear the original/source music which means you'll hear what was recorded without any alteration made by the headphones (like adding extra bass or treble).
It will definitely enhanced the bass since it can reach as low as 15 Hz. But you gotta need an amp if you're gonna use it on a mobile device since these headphones have high impedance (35 ohms) which cannot be fully powered by mobile devices. This leads to a lower volume and less bass. But you can definitely boost the bass in these ones. I actually managed to boost the bass on a superlux headphone that has 64 ohms in my zenfone 2. The bass is not muddy but it's not well controlled though. That's where an amp comes in.
thanks, its very helpful. Im planning to use the headphones with the nexus 5x and macbook air 13 inch 5th gen. Any idea how the headphones will perform with these devices without the amp?
I use poweramp as a music player for my zenfone 2 and it has a 10-band equalizer and a preamp. The preamp can help you increase the volume of your music even you're at max volume. I don't how it exactly works since it's a software but a preamp reduces your output impedance and increases the gain. That might help when listening on the nexus 5x. I actually increase my preamp a bit so that I can hear the details in my music more. I don't know about the macbook though. But I guess the sound quality will still be good without any amps. It would just sound like a little bit thin since it's tuned flat and it's not fully powered.
I've heard some reviews over at Head-Fi comparing the m50s to a 30 dollarish Superlux hd681 evo they also have a better detachable cable design with a male adaptor as to relieve stress on the actual cable itself. It would be so cool if you do a review on these. i just subscribed seeing as you have the best produced headphone review concentrated channel. Please consider it :D
The m50x have a lot more bass than the m40x which are relatively flat and better in total for studio monitoring. If u want a lot bass get the m50x if not m40x both should be pretty similar it should just be sound signature that changes not quality
Do the M40x compatible to M50x 1.2m cable? Since it's only come with two long cable attachment, is there any available replaceable 1.2m cable for M40x?
