@CrimsonCat87

APD can manifest as a "delay" between the brain hearing the words and being able to interpret them. If you experience something similar, it might be a good idea to develop a habit of pausing before answering - like raising a "wait a minute" finger, or pretend to think about it. It would allow your brain to catch up, it saves on having to go "what?", and might make you appear intellectual instead of potentially annoying. 😁😉

@SRose-vp6ew
@SRose-vp6ew 9 месяцев назад
That’s how I explain it to people. When- “Go to the door” sounds like, “drop to the floor.” It’s not a problem with hearing, hearing can be 100%, it’s a problem with your brain interpreting the sounds as the wrong sounds. Write it out and it can be read 100%. People looking when they speak to you so you can read lips and them making hand gestures like pointing is especially helpful.

I think the reason people say “huh” or “what” after someone tells them something and the proceeds to answer them is that we instinctively say that to let the other person know it was hard to understand, then our brains kinda put the pieces together and we answer.
@Sakrosankt-Bierstube
@Sakrosankt-Bierstube Год назад
That's actually the exact reason why we say "what" or "huh" or what ever. Our brains are sometimes "to slow" at processing informations so it does what usually is needs to do to be able to process the informations. So yeah, it's basically a reflex and it's totally normal.

Just to clarify: having ADHD is completely different from Auditory Processing Disorder. The two are not the same. ADHD is attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder, while APD is when your auditory cortex doesn’t function properly, making it difficult for your brain to process and interpret sounds correctly. Despite it being a form of neurodivergence, it is actually closer to being hard of hearing than it is to ADHD or autism. It is also very common for people with APD to have speech difficulties because they cannot hear words properly

This is super relatable. I’m a line cook with APD, and it can be very difficult at times, especially when I get told specific instructions for making the meals. My boss would repeat them to me and I’d either have to repeat it back or write it down. Even with that, I’d still get the instructions wrong sometimes due to my APD, but it’s not bad to the point where the dish is ruined. I can tell that my boss gets tired of my constant repetition of the stuff I ask him, but he’s still willing to try and help me out as best as he can. I also have a hard time explaining stuff to the point of miscommunication. I know what I’m about to say, but it comes out wrong and I wouldn’t even notice until people would end up doing what I didn’t ask them to do and they’d tell me what I actually said. I thought I told them to do one thing, but it turned out I said it in a way that made it sound like I said something else than it did in my head, and that always makes me feel discouraged.

I've been like this my WHOLE LIFE too and remember getting to learn sign language for a song as a kid and FELL IN LOVE WITH IT and learned the whole alphabet like immediately and remember wanting to speak with ASL ALL THE TIME, but of course not being able to... Fast forward a gazillion years and here I am, only watch stuff with closed captioning whenever possible so I can 'hear it', still remember the ASL alphabet and trying to find an ASL class I can drag my 9 almost 10yr old to, and at 45yo myself I found out almost 3yrs ago I'm ausomely autistic!!! Apparently having apd is pretty common for us. On the other hand, what if all us APD peeps just heard a lot of BS early in life and we've just been trying to defend ourselves against it the best we can ever since? I'm starting to feel like that's a legit possibility.

Auditory processing disorder isn’t like just a delay. It’s when a part of your brain doesn’t work correctly, so it can’t comprehend what is being said to you. It takes someone who has ADP longer to answer not because they pause and then answer, but because they need time to figure out what was being said. A lot of time they use “sounds like ____, but couldn’t have been, so it must have been _____ instead”

Guys, please remember that having a delay and mis-hearing stuff aren't the only symptoms of APD. People with this often struggle with long spoken paragraphs and will pick up very few words near the end, may hear with bits consistently jumbled, fragmented or cut out entirety. Other symptoms include being unable to identify which diresction sound comes from and backround noise (even when quiet) feeling like it drowns out foreground sound. If you think this short relates to you, absolutely do some more research and make a decision on whether or not to continue with a medical professional, but don't self diagnose from just this :)

Bro this is my life pretty much all the time. When I was a kid I even went to go get my hearing checked because I thought it was an auditory issue. Then me and my parents found out what I really had was a processing disorder. For anyone else who struggles with this, you’re not alone. It’s so hard sometimes. Sometimes I really need subtitles, and I hate asking friends to put on subtitles for me. And in the past if I kept asking friends to repeat themselves so I could understand what they said they eventually gave up and just said “ugh. Never mind!!!” It just makes me feel even more frustrated with myself.

@@salemcrow5078 fr! Like, my mom could say something out of context from a show/laughing at show, and I'd be confused, then I'd ask her to explain. It felt like my brain just zoned out when she was saying the thing, so I ask her to say it again, then she gets frustrated with me and says something like "YoU sHoUlD hAvE bEeN wAtChInG tHe ShOw." I'm sorry MOTHER I have other things to do and I would like to know what has caught your interest so that I can use it later. So then I get mad and embarrassed and go do what I was doing. (I can't even stomp away or slam doors bc then my dad would hear, ask my mom what happened, mom would play the role of Poor Pitiful Mother, and then he'd go find me and whoop my a$$ without actually asking what had happened.) But then like a few minutes after she said the thing to me, in the middle of doing something, it'd click and I'll just start giggling. Then they give me weird looks like * I'm * the crazy one. And then she wonders why I'm scared to say things to her.

I definitely have this. Both the delay and the mishearing. It can be really annoying to constantly ask "What did you say?" so sometimes it can be easier to respond to the nonsense I do hear and people can repeat themselves when they are confused with how I responded

You are not alone, my dear. You are not stupid. In facr, you're probably more in tune than most. But people don't understand that hyper-attuned people have higher systems of filtration, and it's hard to sort out the valuable from the trash when there's so much noise.
