The writing on the Honeymooners was great, but it took this outstanding and talented cast to make it work. Still a great show more than 60 years after it's debut. And Ms meadow's was a comic genius on the show, along with Jackie and art Carney. Love Joyce Randolph also.
Alice always had an understated sexiness that Audrey still has in this interview...and my goodness, what a memory....one of greatest shows in television ever
David Smith I was 18 years old in 1999 when I discovered this show on TV Land late one night. I was hooked instantly and continued to watch it as long as it was on TV Land. And I also though Alice was smoking hot 🔥
Costas shines here as he asks questions and then sits back and listens, without interruption. THAT is the way to do an interview! People want to hear the interviewEE, not the interviewER.
Every interviewer should be reminded of this weekly. If the person being interviewed is rolling, then let them roll! Costas occasionally sets the scene, then lets her roll again. You put it so well Demef. BTW She probably was too pretty, but she still worked great.
Like The Honeymooners, Audrey Meadows will never be forgotten. How wonderful to have this video to show us what a beautiful, smart, clever lady she was. Costas is excellent in that he lets the lady talk and charm us all.
Costas was excellent!...Audrey, I suspect, was a heavy smoker, as she died at age 73 from lung cancer. She was so pretty, and exuded just the right attitude for that role.
All I hear is a raspy voice ravaged by decades of cigarette smoke. It’s sad how the cigarette industry decimated America’s 20th century radio, tv, and movie personalities.
I met her when she worked with me at Nickelodeon Show in Orlando called Hi Honey, I'm Home! She had some photos taken inside of Universal near the New York area. She sent me some personal items including an Autograph.
When my mother died in 1977 there was a woman who lived up the street her name was Margaret but everybody called her muzi for some reason she took a liking to me and she kind of adopted me. She was a spitting image of Audrey Meadows her mannerisms the hair color the facial structure the eyes everything, she was just a wonderful I will never forget her. She was a wonderful loving women from Ireland and I was a little boy came to the US from, the irony is she never had children she would have been a great mother.
Audrey Meadows was one of the most class act ladies that ever lived. She made the Honeymooners. "Baby you're the Greatest" thank you for the memories. God Bless.
I have seen all 39 episodes 100 times along with the Andy Griffith Show and I love them all. Great writing and great acting. The was a very good interview.
Grew up in the NYC area watching these every night on WPIX. I realized long ago that I really did model my ideal woman in terms of her strength, courage and wit largely on Audrey Meadow's Alice. Pity that I never got the chance to thank her.
I have never understood the appeal of that Jackie Gleason show. Just yelling and screaming; no comedy at all However, I love both of the Meadows sisters.
No doubt about that. I don't watch predictable modern sitcoms at all. Why, when one has watched the Honeymooners, there is nothing to compare with it. I'm like Costa and watch the shows over and over. And, oddly, they seem as fresh and hilarious as the first time seeing them. And they personify a (austere) time period familiar to many who grew up in that era.
@@oksills Then you are missing the true sitcom king. No great sitcoms from 60s to early 2000s would even exist without it or I Love Lucy. You can still see the DNA 60 years later on television. You're missing out dude.
What a wonderful women who was smart, charming, beautiful. I love the story of how she gets the role. You can see she really loved Jackie and Ed and everyone on that show. How sweet it is!!!
@@coburna5 You've got it exactly backwards. Most liberals are all about freedom. It's racism, forced religion and government interference in our personal lives that we loathe. Have a nice day.
I had SUCH a crush on Alice from watching the Honeymooners shows on rerun as a kid. I always thought she was just so gorgeous and couldn't take my eyes off her. Audrey really was such a lovely, classy lady.
To Larry King, Howard Stern and all those newbie late night nerds, THIS is how you do an interview. Ask good questions and don't bud in and overtalk the other person.
People need to understand this was a LIVE television show! This was why back in the day when the red light goes on, you are instantly seen by millions of people. This gets people very nervous. My dad worked at Dumont and said videotape was one of the worst things that happened to television. It ruined the spontaneity of rhe talent
So pleased that Bob Costas was able to quote actual lines and describe memorable scenes from the show. I am convinced that he actually loves the show as much as the rest of us. He's not just fawning over Audrey Meadows for the sake of the show, he's a genuine fan. I would have liked Bob to jog Audrey's memory on filming specific moments in the show that we all love and wait for. Also, he never asked her about the abrupt end after just 39 episodes. That had to be a big disappointment for the rest of the cast.
When Jackie Gleason and Art Carney paired up on the Honeymooners it was as funny as anything as there ever has been on television.. It’s nice that the classic 39 episodes are on RU-vid so they can be watched anytime you want to. The Honeymooners were also the basis for the Flintstones.
Thanks for the wonderful upload, Mr. Giller. This was a great accidental find for me. Usually, I'm watching your many splendid "Late Night with David Letterman" videos. Once again, you're channel is a treasure trove. Long live The Donz.
Thanks for uploading this video! I've never seen this interview before. Brought back so many marvelous memories of the Honeymooners & when TV was fun to watch instead of this reality tv crapola!
Who was the idiot network ececutive that suggested Alice eulogize Ralph? Ralph Kramden isnt dead and neither is Alice. They live in the same place they always lived...328 chauncey st in Brooklyn. And the Nortons live on top. They live there today and will live there forever
@@robbystechman6384 I don't think it's rent controlled. The landlord, Mr. Johnson, is constantly raising their rent, in spite of Ralph's objections. "You're not getting one extra dime from me, Johnson"!!
What a wonderful story of being cast in the part of Alice! And how beautiful and charming she was in this nostalgic interview. The Honeymooners set the tone for so many shows that would follow, and develop their own personalities, but would never equal the charm of the original. Rest In Peace Jack, Audrey and Art! We love you all!
As I'm watching and loving this incredible in depth interview, it occurred to me you can never see an interview like this today without a studio audience laughing, hooting and wooooing after everything she said. All in the effort to sell it and make it appear not boring. Which is exactly why I never watch late night TV interviews today. Let's face it. TV producers, hosts, and audiences all suck now.
Ask them a question let them answer in heir own time. Well done Mr Costa. I learnt a lot more about the background of the Honeymooners from this interview. It's unfortunate that Joyce Randolph wasn't mentioned.
Thanks very much for this upload (and all your work), Don. I'm stuck in bed with a disability due to nerve damage, and have spent a good portion of the time over the last few years chuckling at your Letterman posts. "The Honeymooners" is also one of my favorite shows, so this interview with Audrey is a particular treat.
Had the extreme pleasure of working with her on a pilot about the time this interview happened. She was perhaps the most gracious actress I have ever worked with. However a chain smoker. Ashtrash trays were hidden around the set!
Enough can’t be said for Gleason, Ms Meadows, and The Honeymooners ensemble but enough also isn’t mentioned about the brilliant interviewer that Costas was. This show was phenomenal. Every decent podcaster who runs a decent interview today owes Later a nod. Best interview show of all time.
Cavett and Costas were very good interviewers, and only occasionally tried to show off how much they knew (which was a considerable amount). It's the format that makes the difference. You should only have one guest per show. But the Carson format was the favored format.
she was a dear lady - we thought of her and Mr Six (Robert F.) as our Continental Airlines family mom and dad when Continental was known as “The Proud Bird with the Golden Tail” prior to the disastrous Lorenzo era during the early 1980s. She designed the interiors on board Continental’s original four Boeing 747s and McDonnell-Douglas DC-10s when wide body aircraft were first introduced during the early 1970s. We miss you deeply Miss Audrey!
Audrey was the only member of the Honeymooners cast to earn residuals after the classic 39 episodes of the show from 1955 to 1956 started airing in reruns. Her brother Edward, a lawyer, had inserted a clause into her original contract whereby she would be paid if the shows were rebroadcast, earning her millions of dollars.
