Hi Kim. About half of my potato chits have sprouted. It is probably all that I am going to get. I’m way past potato season in my area, so anything I get this fall is a bonus. The drought in my area ended July 6th, and it has rained most days-yeah, no watering needed. Mid-month, I direct sowed seeds for Danvers carrots, and Brunswick cabbage. I have cabbage seedlings aplenty and will need to thin them down in a week or two. The carrot seeds… not a single sprout. Wet soil, and cloudy skies weren’t enough for them. I’ll have to resow when it cools down further, September, maybe October. The first average frost date in my area is Halloween. However, I’ve seen snow on the ground as early as October 13th. The first hard freeze comes about mid-November, and multi-days of freezing temperatures after December 15th. One of these days I’ll have to write it all down in a journal, in case I forget. I do use a spreadsheet to track the crops I grow and the planting times. I just started looking at a free online calendar that graphs out planting time and succession planting based on zip code, climate zone, frost dates, etc. It allows for a lot of customization in the advanced settings. app.seedtime.us/users/sign_in I gathered my gardening tools and golden beet seeds, and went outside to sow them. The moment I stepped on the porch, it started raining. The moment I put my tools and seeds away, the rain stopped, but there is more to come. It is God telling me, not today. I have seeds on order, and am waiting for delivery. Among them are turnip seeds. I couldn’t source any locally, and my mother used the last of the seeds in her garden. As soon as they arrive, I will be sowing them too. Mid-August will be sowing time for Waltham Broccoli and Snow Ball Cabbage. I will also be clearing out two raised beds, digging them out, and moving them to an area of the property that gets more sunlight in the fall and winter, and shade in the spring and summer. That way, I’ll be able to better utilize them for growing root crops. And… it will make winter gardening easier. Snow or no snow, I keep the garden producing year-round. It will be September before I can plant greens, Boc Choy, Yellow Heart Winter Choy, Tatsoi, Komatsuna, radishes, and lettuce/ My area is less than ideal for growing parsnips, but I want to give it a try. October is the soonest I can plant them, and it is garlic time. After that, I let the garden coast through the winter, and start again with seed starts in January. Chickens are a fun addition to the garden, and they are manuer machines, which will boost the nutrients in my compost for the next season-starting in February. Oh, I did get too many cucumbers, and gave many away. They are still producing. I'm harvesting a minimum of fifteen every week. I gave away forty pounds of tomatoes and still have too many, well over a hundred pounds. Thankfully the chickens love them. They love the cantalope and watermelon scraps too, and the pickleworm damaged zucchini and cucumbers. Fortunately pickleworm damage was very few this year, but armyworms made up for them. Revenge is watching chickens fight over a hornworm. I was hoping for more to feed to them, but so far, I've only found one this season. Armyworms are a nice snack for the chickens, but it is first come, gets the worm. It is more satisfying watching them tear apart a hornworm into bite size chunks. They chicks are seven weeks old tomorrow. They are getting bigger, eating more, and producing more fertilizer for my compost bins.

I'm gonna try cabbage again. I have never succeeded in achieving the dense thick ball of cabbage tho. I will keep trying. I have a Brocolini type similar to rabi, I can start. We need a video on what flowers to start now 😊🌸
@CaliKim29
@CaliKim29 Месяц назад
Try the smaller varieties of cabbage - much easier to grow here in SoCal with our random warm winter days! As far as what flowers to plant now, here in Cali plant any of the flowers from the cool season collection in October. I just started new Zinnias seeds and sunflowers now for late fall blooms.

I tried some new things in my garden this year that turned out to be too much for my garden beds. I’ve never done a fall garden before. Usually it’s summer crops that I succession sow. It doesn’t leave me much room for fall crops since I live in Rhode Island and have a short growing season. My frost date is October 12. I ordered some of the Monterey products after watching your video and they are helping enormously. Thanks for that info ❤ I am going to try a couple things for fall. My parsley was a bust so that definitely will be one of them. Thank you for the encouragement . It gives me hope to try them again.

Thanks for sharing your experience! It's great to hear that the Monterey products are helping. Fall gardening can be challenging, especially with a short growing season, but it's rewarding too. Parsley is a good choice for fall-hopefully, it will thrive for you this time. Keep experimenting, and I'm sure you'll find a balance that works for your garden. Good luck, and thanks for the kind words, Suzanne!! Kim

Hi Ramona, It's great to hear about your garden's progress despite the challenges. The rain must be a welcome relief after the drought. It's wonderful that your potato chits have sprouted, and any yield this fall will indeed be a bonus. It's a bit disheartening that your carrots haven't sprouted yet, but your plan to resow when it cools down sounds wise. The details about your area's frost and freeze dates are helpful for planning your planting schedule. It sounds like the free online calendar tool could be quite beneficial for organizing your garden activities. It seems like the weather is keeping you on your toes, with rain interrupting your golden beet seed sowing. Hopefully, you'll get a break soon. Waiting for turnip seeds to arrive must be exciting, especially since they're hard to find locally. Your plan to sow Waltham Broccoli and Snow Ball Cabbage in mid-August sounds promising. Relocating your raised beds to optimize sunlight for different seasons is a smart move. It will indeed make winter gardening easier. Your plan for September planting of greens and other veggies sounds like it will keep your garden productive. Trying parsnips sounds like an interesting experiment, and October sounds like the perfect time for garlic planting. It's impressive how you manage to keep your garden producing year-round, even through the winter. Chickens are definitely a great addition to the garden, both for fun and for the manure they provide. Your cucumber and tomato harvests sound bountiful! It's nice that you can share the excess with others and your chickens. Watching them enjoy the produce and deal with pests like hornworms must be satisfying. It's great that they help manage the armyworm population too. Your garden is thriving, and it's clear you're putting in a lot of effort to make it successful. Keep up the great work, and enjoy the fruits (and vegetables) of your labor! Kim

@CaliKim29
@CaliKim29 Месяц назад
Hi!! Thank you for subscribing and following along!! Regarding the fountain. When were selected to be on a backyard makeover show...we were so excited to find out we were going to be receiving a water feature! CameraGuy, always wanted one. The design of our backyard is Al Fresco Amphitheater; which is an open-air venue for performances or events, often surrounded by natural scenery. The fountain, square large planter and red pavers serve as the center point of the backyard amphitheater, encased with rows of stone and grass seating for guests to enjoy the "concerts" (family musicians) playing music. The materials are molded cast stone, fiberglass, ceramic and metal. The fountain is durable and authentic, they are lighter than fountains carved from real stone, but have a similar appearance and texture. Thank you so much for noticing and taking the time to inquire. I hope you enjoyed our backstory....we are so grateful for our backyard makeover, and will be highlighting our story in this week's video. Much appreciated! Kim

what do you suggest as a crop rotation,, once the tomato plants are removed, which will be in 1-2 weeks in zone 6. Some vegetables that I would like to grow are lettuces, arugula, kale, garlic, bush beans
@CaliKim29
@CaliKim29 15 дней назад
Here's a rough outline, hope it helps. Thanks for clicking the like button and subscribing, if you have not already, Jessie. Year 1 (Fall): Plant garlic where tomatoes were grown. Year 2 (Spring): Harvest garlic and plant leafy greens or beans in the same spot. Year 2 (Fall): After harvesting greens or beans, plant a cover crop like clover or winter rye to improve soil health. This rotation plan helps balance nutrient use in the soil and reduce disease and pest cycles. Happy planting! 🌱🍂 CaliKim

Loveeee these get ready videos. So helpful. The pea variety i have says its to be planted in my zone from Sept-Feb. When it cools down a little more here could i possibly get away with growing before September maybe? Does the months on the packet really determine the growing months or more of a suggestion 🤔
@CaliKim29
@CaliKim29 Месяц назад
Hi Amy, The planting months on the packet are guidelines based on typical weather patterns. If temperatures cool down earlier, you can try planting before September. Monitor soil temperature and weather conditions to ensure they are suitable for peas. Cooler soil and consistent moisture are key for successful germination and growth. Does that help any!? CK

@CaliKim29
@CaliKim29 Месяц назад
Merle, To ensure no bugs hitchhike on your herbs when bringing them indoors for the winter, rinse the plants thoroughly with water, inspect leaves and stems for pests, and consider using an insecticidal soap or neem oil spray. Quarantine the plants indoors for a few days before integrating them with other indoor plants to catch any lingering pests. Hope this helps! CK

Absolutely! Dependent on where you live.In July/August, I always planta new round of tiny Tim a dwarf variety from my Late Summer garden Seed collection, as well as several cold tolerant varieties such as Oregon spring, Siletz, and Stupice, which give me harvest throughout the winter here in Southern California. Since we get no frost, these are perfect varieties to grow all winter long. Watch my what to plant in July video for more info.

Hi Tara- that's crazy heat! Wait until it cools down under 75 consistently for for these veggies. You could plant any of the veggies in the May, June or July Must Plant videos. They are warm weather veggies that will thrive in temps up to 90 ish degrees. Shade cloth is a must, though, in those high temps, even for warm weather veggies. Keeps it 10-15 degrees cooler underneath so the plants can survive and even thrive. Check out our recent heat videos for more info. Good luck and stay cool!
