I heard you say that you "got the owners permission" before taking it off and looking at it. Me harley dealer just changes stuff out and then tells you. Lol, so I stopped taking my bike to them. Thanks Doc, you're awesome. 👍😎👍
Motor mounts are one of the most overlooked parts on a bike. I had a new Harley engines installed under the long block program. Told the dealer to just replace all mounts and the drive belt while they were in there. Fells like a brand new bike with 85k on it. Great catch Doc.👍
40K mile in my 2018 RK, but I do not feel any vibration out of ordinary. This video is a good reminder that time to time we need to check the rubber mounts. Thanx for that!!!!
This makes me smile, thinking about my old shovel head big twins with no rubber mounts engine to frame. I jokingly refer to them as genuine Milwaukee vibrators, due to parts vibrating off and/or breaking.
My 15 Road glide front end jumps side to side. Sometimes it's extremely aggressive. I have to keep both hands on the bars to maintain full control. I can't let go of the bars to zip up jacket or adjust my gloves without the bars jumping side to side. I've changed the tires, tighten the triple tree and even changed to different wheels to eliminate any possibilities. I am now hoping that you have discovered what the problem is. Thanks for the video. You always provide great content.
I can not discover over the Internet. Being a 15 I worry about wheel bearings, rear swingarm bearings. Yes rear can make the front swing. Neck bearing replacement, old fork oil or a leaking fork. Accessories that should not be on a Harley. Suspension in the back modified to be lowered ( lowering blocks) Could be these or more…..Doc
And could that give you a wobble at high speeds and aggressive turning I’m experiencing that not real bad, but and I just upgraded my front and back suspension to legends did a rebuild kit on the front end. All the shams they were out. Thanks Doc good information.
My 2005 carbed XL1200C has started behaving exactly like this...increased vibrations, especially coming from the rear end...it's got about 35K on it, so I guess it's time to check those bushing out. 🤔👍
I had the rear one replaced on my 2011 FXDWG because when making a turn it felt like the rear end was coming out from underneath it. Makes a big time difference on how it rides now
2005 FLHRCI 78,000 miles. On 3rd set of rear isolators and 4th front one. I have learned that the front ones from Harley do not live long if you get motor oil on them. My bet is that the new double front style are the same way. Oil destroys them.
Wish I was closer to you guys, here in Daytona I get a spanking new tech to work on my bike and just follows the drill and plugs in the laptop. No idea if other "stuff" was happening or about to happen. Seems to me the new way to service Harleys is like how Mr. Lube operates with many dealerships. Wish I was wrong on this, just have to find a better mechanic!
ditto. I feel mine was out of alignment for 100K miles because the front tire wears on the left side more than the right. That is even after all 3 rubbers were replaced
2006 Street bob. I replaced the inner primary bearing because it was starting to go. Now after reassembly it is acting like a bad composator. It did not do that before disassembly. I torqued everything per the 2006 street bob service manual 160 ft-lbs on the bolt with the proper tool between the teeth to lock everything (not the chain wedge) what else could be causing the specific vibration at 2k-2.3k rpm only. Everywhere else is smooth. Bike has 7k miles. New front motor mount. Is it worth spending $1k to upgrade to the newer compensator? Thanks for all the great advice over the years Doc!! You videos are indispensable. PS, I know it has the proper oil level from watching yous video multiple times
Back in those days the bolt on the comp can bottom out before tightening down the comp assembly. There is a harden washer offered by HD that would be installed under the head of the bolt to help this issue….Doc
Thanks for another informative video, now......is that a Road Glide Police bike in the background?? I have a FXRP and a FLHTP, but that my friend, I would like.
Rear rubber on a Dyna can cause many issues. Check this out Big Bear Chopper Rear Dyna Engine Mounts for Harley Davidson Dyna Models It is supposed to be the last rear mount you will ever need…..Doc
Turned out to be the 1/4-20 bolt broke that held the bracket from saddle bag to saddlebag and muffler to muffler. Part of the rear fender. I made a stainless steal repair….Doc
HI to all , I know is not the right way to ask , But I have looking what screw plug , between cylinder of the left side engine , is ? I have some leak on that screw , and I could find on the scheme parts .
You have not given us much information to work with! I am going to assume you are describing a timing hole with an Allen plug. Remove the plug. Wrap Teflon tape around the threads, then reinstall. Do not over torque this plug or you will pull the threads right out of the case….Doc
Doc ,Aug 01 purchased a 1992 Electra glide ,original owner 28k miles 100% Dealer serviced ,looks like new .purchased machine on condition and records ,trailered home .first ride 40mph smooth as silk ,coming to stop it felt as I was riding over rumple strips ,stopped still vibrating . Service records show front motor mount replaced around 28k checked good ,rear checked good .what's your thoughts ? Ordered top vibration damper .other than that after 15 mph ,smooth ,primary chain comp sprocket in order ,thank you jp
You do realize you own a wonderful classic motorcycle? It will never be completely smooth at idle like the new bikes with counter-balancer and 4-point rubber isolation. HD decided it was best to “balance” the flywheels so the smooth ride was above idle. I am sorry to report the “new” front rubber mount is designed and made with a harder rubber compound to last longer. You could check the front mount center bolt. Remove the regulator, loosen the bolt and nut almost completely. Take your hand and move the bolt up and down. There should be NO binding. If there is follow the service manual on adjusting. Same check with the bolt in the center motor mount. The un obvious is if the Intake seals are leaking allowing the motor to run lean or the timing is off. Both making the motor struggling to run.. just thinking outside the box….Doc
Late to the party here. My 15 cvo streetglide has a constant vibration under load and really vibrates the windshield and mirrors. Pull the clutch in it goes away no matter the speed. My mounts look exactly like these ones and will be changing this week. My question is, did this bike share the same symptoms and did the isolators fix it? Thanks
Also, it’s hard to get a service guy to look at it especially if you’re under an extended warranty they don’t want to pay for it. At least that’s my experience. You have to get in an argument which I don’t need. Extended warranty is very expensive. My bike has close to 60,000 miles on it Suspension is war out I imagine as a fear of the things. Thanks again. Appreciate your insight. Hey what’s your take on the 117 kit for a twin cam? Are they still making them? I know they were on back order Reno I want to put the money up for one. It’s time to freshen up my mother, because I do not want to buy a new CVO’s perfectly happy with my beautiful CVO’s ultra limited
The Factory is not rushing out to get the 117 kits back in stock. As you can see They are pushing forward the M8 program leaving Twin Cams in the History Books. I suggest you contact Kevin Baxter and build together a motor that will perform and last……Doc
@@LowCountryHarleyDavidson yeah, he’s a busy guy. Moving in all. And yeah, I Harley at strange over the years. Yeah probably just freshen it up. Maybe bump up the compression a little bit it’s not a race bike. It is a beautiful, twin cam CVO’s nicer than the new ones specially mine.
Hey doc, big question. My 2010 softail deluxe just turned 50k. I’m going to change all fluids, plugs, wires, and fuel filter. Anything else I should do, like primary chain adjustment, valve adjustment etc. ? Also do you think that mileage is too high to put upgraded cams ??Thank you for your time & knowledge ??
Follow you Factory Service Manual 50K service recommendations. As for the cam. I would have a Tech test compression, leak down and condition of the cam chain tensioners. To help answer that question…..Doc
It bothers me that the techs did not have an answer. My diagnostic’s would include a compression test, leak down test and removal of your exhaust to look up into the exhaust ports. This of course would have cost you 1-2 hours of labor cost but would give you information you did not have before…..Doc
No! Let’s not all jump off a cliff. I have serviced bikes with over 100K and have their original rubber isolators. If your bike is riding normal, just ride and remember the symptoms…..Doc
