Hello I am Suzanne, I am a small scale flower farmer and florist located in Devon in the Uk zone 8B.
I grow on a small cut flower plot of 16 square metres, and also have a cottage style garden.
I grow my flowers to sell predominantly as pre ordered retail bouquets and also provide florals for small events.
I grow without the use of chemicals, and try to garden in away that benefits nature.
My channel is very casual and low tech with all filming and editing being done by myself, content is a real mix of both gardening, cut flower production and floristry.

I've ordered some Darwin tulips for the garden, along with some new alliums. You've reminded me to have a look through my seeds for what to sow now!

Ah yes well you have reminded me to order some more Alliums 🌸 and I might follow your lead and order some tulips for my cottage garden, thank you for the idea 🌸

Hi Suzanne! I really enjoy your videos on my TV screen with my morning coffee. I had to pop on my phone to leave a comment so you know I’m really getting a lot of inspiration from what you’re sharing. 🩷💐

@@stemsbysuzanne Wow! She’s in Australia-great vibe and I’ve already learned so much. You know, it brings tears of gratitude to my eyes reflecting on how we flower folk are connecting from all over the world. It seems divine to me. 🥲❤️‍🔥

To avoid tulip fire I grow about 500 of my favourite tulips in 10 large 50cm plastic pots every year. I can clean the pots out every year and fill with fresh compost/perlite (plus some recycled plastic bottles to take up some space). I have always had great results and no disease issues. It's always more than enough for the handful of bouquets I need to sell early in the season.

This sounds very efficient and tempting I may browse the catalog 🌸

I’m growing tulips, because Mother’s Day & Easter is late next year 🌷. They are hardwork & it coincides with seed sowing time too, but folks do love them 💐.

Just a few tulips here, I'm from Holland so I cannot compete in any way with the big farmers here... but i do like them. The most simple bulbs are almost as expensive as the flower in het supermarket, on sale a bouquet of tulips cost 4 euro for 20 stems. Bummer!
@stemsbysuzanne
@stemsbysuzanne Месяц назад
It’s crazy that they are so expensive, and the supermarket bunches here are so very cheap too. Good luck with your Tulips 🌸

So many flower farmers have said tulips were not profitable for them so they don’t grow them. Then the next video you watch will have tulips growing in trays, planted cheek by jowl. Not very helpful but fascinating to watch. As always, it was lovely seeing your garden and what you are working on. Nice to see a flower farmer so close to home. Thanks for another beautiful video. 😊

Yes I think that is why I can’t decide, I probably will end up ordering a few, but I definitely will not be spending as much as I have in the past. 🌸

Hi Suzanne, I saw you cleaning your labels to re-usea? What o you use to clean as \i can never clear fu;ly my useed labels. I write on them with pencil and \i use 99% alcohol to clean and sterilise them. Thank you. Happy gardening 🙂

I love pencil and will be using it again this year. I had ordered some new labels and they came with a marker, but all the labels I put outside wore off, I used white spirit to clean the labels that still had the marker on, but my trusty pencil is already back in use now 😊

for work ive ordered bulk quantity tulips and daffs , pretty standard varieties, there are some doubles but not real fancy ones, quick question do you dry Dahlias ? I was watching a uk grower, Bramble something is her youtube, she was having some really nice results with them.
@stemsbysuzanne
@stemsbysuzanne Месяц назад
Yes to drying Dahlias, but some varieties are much better than others, jowey Joshua is great for drying. I bought the bulk standard varieties about 4 years ago, and they are probably the best I’ve ever grown. Happy growing 🌸

Yes to drying Dahlias, although they do vary in results, Jowey Joshua is one of my varieties that dries nicely. I grew the basic varieties about 5 years ago, and honestly they were probably the best Tulips I have ever grown. Happy growing 🌸

Oh! By the way, are you growing Erysimum cheiri / wallflower? Have you ever used it as a cut flower?
@stemsbysuzanne

Yes although sometimes the stems have been short, so this year I’m going to try it in the tunnel. 🌸

@@stemsbysuzanne Try planting them where they’ll need to reach for the light. I have them shorter where they don’t have to reach and longer where they’re along a south wall reaching for the coming spring sun. Anyway, I’m thrilled to know ow they work as a cut flower! Even though they’ve been short, do you have any cutting tips for them? Thank you , Suzanne for your attention. I’m so thankful to have it before you become famous 🙏🌟

I like watching you plant, but it would be helpful if you told us what you were planting, either by a voice over or the plant name on screen. Unfortunately, I am not able to identify the flower when it is a seedling. Thanks
@stemsbysuzanne
@stemsbysuzanne Месяц назад
Yes you are quite right, that would have been helpful, I was planting out some biennials, Foxgloves, Dianthus, Honesty, and sweet Rocket. I had recorded many clips with voice over, but when I played them back they had no sound as the microphone must have died 🙈
