I live in SA , I love gardening and I just came to see Mash lol.

If your compost is nicely broken down (not clumps or hot) you can grow directly in it - I top up all my beds with a nice thick layer of compost and plant directly into it every year - no problem at all. You don't even need to dig it in, just put it on top. The worm and stuff in the garden will take it down for you. Add some compost teas to increase the good bacteria in the soil - will make a big difference too. I add worm castings to all my seeds when I grow them. From a dead garden with just clay, to a lush veggie garden with all the good bugs (and still some of the pests, but under control) in just 3 years. I can't say much for the rats - we still have an issue with those too, but my dogs do help with that a bit and we use the traps from a raptor place to humanely capture them when we can. Good luck!

Jaa! that rat story is what I'm going through right now. I mean my cabbage & turnips seedlings were coming along soo nicely; then boom i see small stocks left behind and all the leafy greens gone 😱😭
