Have you tried 3 sisters gardening? Corn, beans and pumpkin. The beans are nitrogen fixers and climb the corn and the pumpkin covers the ground, keeping it moist and reducing weeds. Can also do the same with sunflowers instead of corn. I have to do sunflowers as the monkeys destroy any corn I try to grow.

Hi Karabo, am in Bloemfontein and I have just planted most of vegetable seeds last week, it looks like I am late as they have not sprouted yet, or it's the waiting game. I have opted for container gardening (space limitations).

Hey thanks for sharing, what have you grown? yeah in the colder seasons it takes the seeds to sprout slower. Have you tried growing radish, lettuce, peas? those ones don’t mind the season and grow quick. In about two weeks spring will be around and the germination will happen a lot quicker

Karabo where do you live? What heat zone are you in? Will the same rules apply to Cape Town?

I live in Gauteng, I have zone 9b- Benoni. lol I hope that’s right, I just googled now. There will be subtle differences in Cape Town however for the most part our climates and seasons are similar

I have not been lucky with growing herbs yet. I will try in Spring and see how that will go. I think I must just grow individual herbs starting with one. The mixed herb shandis is not working for me 😢

Rosemary, lavender, thyme, rocket, fennel are all fairly easy to grow. Maybe start in a container so you can move it around to find the right spot for it. Mine thrive on neglect. :) Sometimes we baby them too much.

Ugh, I am having some problems with the neighbourhood cats that use my veggie beds for a toilet and scratching out the seedlings. What can I do about it. I have planted marigolds with it and sprinkled some rosemary.

I had the same problem... With my own cat though 😂😂... So I kept the garden a bit extra moist for some days... She eventually gave up due to the moist

Maybe try a trellis/fence or chicken fence tunnel to keep them out? I have 5 dogs and made a cheap trellis from wood offcuts to keep them out the veggie garden.

My cabbage is always suffering K. Any remedy??? It gets eaten a lot it seems like I will never harvest it
@GardeningWithKaraboMahlase
@GardeningWithKaraboMahlase Месяц назад
Do you know what it’s getting eaten by?
@cazomega

I usually just plant a lot and replace as needed - eventually end up with a decent harvest. Mine get eaten by the cabbage white caterpillars, birds, aphids and more lol. I interplant with onions, marigolds, leeks, root plants like carrots, beetroots and even spinach to confuse the bugs. I also plant nasturtium nearby but not in the same bed - it draws the aphids away. And lastly - I try and stay 100% natural - no pesticides or artificial fertilizers etc - that way your beneficial insects can come along to kill off the bugs we don't want in the garden. Good luck!

i understand that rats are a pest in the garden but, mentioning them over and over again was triggering. Please, try to talk less about rats.
