It's always good to find native Floridians like I said I am 5th generation Florida mostly manatee not many of us left. Watched the state go through a lot of changes from agriculture based economies to tourism based can't say it's been to good of one. But that's just my opinion. Lol of good people but also a lot of bad people. And a lot more of really bad for the environment 😕

I would love to try these tomatoes. My husband is Italian and makes the best lasagna with a homemade sauce. I swear that is the secret ingredient to his lasagna. I have been trying to grow enough tomatoes to make the sauce homemade instead of using canned tomato paste and such. I have about 15 tomato plants between roma tomatoes I started from store bought tomatoes and beefsteak tomatoes from seeds from the dollar store. But, only got a big bowl full of Roma tomatoes so far. Not enough to make a sauce yet. The beefsteak tomatoes are not even close to being red yet. I only have one good beefsteak tomato that is still really green.

@@HomegrownFloridaZ9a iam ok. She died a little over a year ago. Gardening was a stress reducer. I planted a few things in containers as that was easier for me. As the disease progressed I could not attend to the plants. I have finally purchased all the supplies to build my raised beds and will start assembly soon. Plan is 8 cinderblock raised bed with charred 6”x6”x12’ untreated pine postal anchors. 1/3 buried in the first and 32-40 inches covered in the cinder block. Cross beams to be bolted for increased strength. I live 5-6 miles from the ocean so yes tropical storm and hurricane force winds are a concern, that is why using sturdier wood anchors. And posts 1/3 I. From both ends. Eventually it will have gates in between the side posts to prohibit the raccoons, squirrels, armadillos from gaining entry but large enough openings for the bees, and other pollinators.

Hi Petrina, another great video. I've already watched this one twice, back-to-back. So much info. I'm trying to decide what to grow next. Everything sounds so good, but I only have so much space. I've grown Amish paste, cherry tomatoes & Everglade tomatoes so far with success. Would love to try a bigger tomato. I won your Puerto Rican Black Beans in January & they are thriving. I had no idea they would grow so tall. It's been producing lots of beans & still going strong. I went away for a week & was worried about my garden. When I came home everything looked as if someone was here tending it for me. So, what you said about ignoring the garden was spot on, lol. I've been making my own compost for a while now. I just bought some large storage bins, drilled some holes in them & started tossing food scraps & yard waste in them. I turn them every week. I've added more bins, it's working really well. Thanks to you, & Jacqueline, I'm becoming a successful Florida gardener, & it's so much fun. Thank you again for all your advice. I love the monthly "what to plant" videos. Keep up the good work.

Hi Petrina thanks for putting out this video for all of us Florida gardeners. Since it was overcast here in Sarasota today I actually got outside and worked under my carport to re-pot some plants and started some pineapple tops off of my pineapples I have been harvesting all through July. I got 10 new pineapples. I just harvested my first papaya yesterday too. While the fruit was ripe on the outside and it fell off the tree right into my hand. I thought it would be ripe to eat. While the color was ripe on the outside and inside the fruit was hard like an unripe cantaloupe. I researched papayas and realized I should have left it to ripen in a paper bag on my table for a few days. Even though I already cut it open I'm going to still try it to see if it ripens. I'm also going to be starting the Everglade tomato seeds you sent me today. I need a few more of these overcast days to get more stuff done in my garden that didn't get done in July due to the heat. Looking forward to cooler weather. Happy gardening Donna

They look exactly the same! MY Floridades are tiny, tiny currant-style tomatoes that we're not very fond of! So... I'm even more motivated to find some REAL Floridade tomatoes! I have tried a couple of varieties here and only one showed any promise. Unfortunately? THAT is the one I cannot get any more seeds for! Blergh. So? Patrina, thank you so much for clarifying how you reuse the cover crops as mulch and for giving me permission to not worry so much about my compost tumbler 😜 Can’t tell you how many hours I’ve fretted over knowing when it is “ready” or if I have enough. We are going camping later in the month and I will admit that I kinda don’t want to leave my little garden that long. I only started in May but my various peppers, chard, cubes, okra and lots of herbs & flower pollinators are are coming along well. Appreciate all your tips & advice.

If you are the kind of person who likes rules to follow, in the absence of which you worry, here is a simple composting rule to follow: add equal amounts of greens and browns to the pile. Don't add meat, grease, or feces of any kind. You can add human urine from a healthy person. Don't worry about the temperature: you'll know when it's ready by the texture, smell, and look of it

@@liamthompson9090 no rules for me except those that are to be broken. Thanks for the great composting tip. That’s pretty much what I am doing so I should be fine. So much to learn but gratefully plenty of assistance here in Patrina’s clan.

Hi neighbor! I wouldn't mind trying to grow your tomatoes in my garden in Citrus County. I have never planted tomatoes this late figuring they wouldn't have time to finish growing especially since last year we had our first frost in November. But these look like a nice size to maybe sneak some in before it gets cold. My Everglades are still producing a few not much to talk about. Everything else I will be taking out this week and amending a lot of my beds and adding those grass clippings on top. Florida Gardener Zone 9a

I sneak them in before the first frost. Sometimes I end up having to pick them green but they ripen on the counter at worse case.

Love the breakdown for each part of the state and advice on what to grow. (I need a plan) Just went through my stash of seeds and made a promise to plant before purchasing more 😂. Missed seeing the flowers/pollinators on the list. I think thats why the Tunisian squash i won several months ago have not done well. Luckily I have some seeds left and will try again. Any idea on when best to plant them in 10A? Oh btw, i save up my eggshells, dehydrate them and then grind them before adding to my compost.
@HomegrownFloridaZ9a
@HomegrownFloridaZ9a Год назад
I should do that too. In 10a, they should be able to do well all fall- spring. We’re they not growing well or not pollinating? Maybe try hand pollinating?
