Welcome to today’s video on Exponents. We are going to go over the five types of questions you must know to answer all the exponent questions on the SAT.
Type 1: Adding & Subtracting Exponents
What you need to know - When to add & Subtract exponents = same base & Multiply = Add/subtract exponents
How to recognize - multiple terms with the same base are multiplied, which means you can add the exponents.
What to be aware of - If the base is different, make sure you change the base before adding/subtracting exponents.
Type 2: Fractional Exponents
What you need to know - how to convert fractional exponents into radicals
How to recognize - If you see a question with fractional exponents and the answer choices have radical in them, very high chance it’s about fractional exponents.
What to be aware of - Although the video only covers one form, make sure you know both versions. Some questions can only be solved with the second form. The second form is in the private lecture linked above.
Type 3: Multiplying exponents
What you need to know - Exponent on exponent = multiplying exponents
How to recognize - Just like the example shown in the video, if the situation requires you to alter the exponent by multiplying, do so by putting an exponent over another exponent.
What to be aware of - Nothing, pretty simple stuff
Type 4: Distribution of exponents
What you need to know - There’s a difference between (2x)^2 & (2+x)^2 - make sure to know the difference.
Type 5: Matching bases
What you need to know - If the bases are the same, you cannot add or subtract exponents. However, matching the bases allow you to add/subtract exponents.
How to recognize - If the questions dealing with exponents and the bases are different, try to match them.
What to be aware of - Always reduce the bigger base into the smaller one.
