The fact that Gabinius kept the coin name and design from the days of Philip I Philadelphus of the Seleucid empire shows the classic republican Rome attitude of “You know what? Let’s leave things how they are”

The fact that Gabinius, being such a staunch friend of Pompey, ended up fighting for Caesar and then Augustus ended up fighting on behalf of the Senate really illustrates just how messy the Roman civil war was. Thanks for another great video!

One interesting thing about Gabinius is that he was apparently getting ready to invade Parthia in support of the claim of the Parthian prince Mithridates when he got a letter from Pompey which caused Gabinius to turn his army around from the Euphrates and instead lead it into Egypt. If Gabinius hadn't been called off by Pompey then you have to wonder how his Parthian campaign would have turned out. Gabinius was probably a better general than Crassus, and he would have had a prominent Parthian ally with Mithridates (who seems to have had some ability himself), so it's possible Gabinius might have been able to beat the Parthians.

This Gabinivs guy is pretty cool and underrated. He (as Pompey/Pompeivs' right-hand) could have been able to avenge his former patron, had he been a slightly better commander & administrator, as his laws certainly set a precedent. His downfall was pushed through because of his lack of charisma like Avgvstvs and his military metal like Pompey and Caesar.
