Aunt Lori's Homemade Goulash! (It will bring back Memories)
Brown 2 lbs. of ground 80/20/ beef and drain.
When browning the meat add 1/2 tsp salt and 1 tsp. pepper
In a dutch oven with a little olive oil put the meat and then add:
1 large sweet onion (diced) & 1 bell pepper (diced)
Cook until the onion and bell pepper soften a bit.
Add 1 can of diced tomatoes and 1 can of stewed tomatoes.
both are 14.5 oz. cans. Then add a 24 oz. (can or jar) of pasta
sauce. Then add: 1 tbsp. Italian seasoning, 1 tbsp. paprika,
1 tbsp. minced garlic, 1 tbsp. chopped basil, 1 tsp. chili powder,
1 tsp. soy sauce, 1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce.
Now add 3 cups of beef broth. Then toss in 2 bay leaves.
Mix... then simmer everything for 25 minutes.
Now add a (1 lb. box) of large elbow macaroni ...
Stir well and simmer for another 25 minutes.
You can add 1 tsp. of sugar if you like. (optional)
(Salt and pepper to taste and serve)
Easy on the salt because the soy sauce has a good amount)
Enjoy!

Brings back a lot of memories, remember every Sunday my mom would fix goulash, she would always make sure we all had buttered bread. And ketchup on the table, thanks for the memories, although she's not with us anymore I still fix it every Sunday like she did.

I remember being invited to a friend's house for dinner and being excited because she was making goulash. I grew up on goulash and hadn't had it for years. Well. It wasn't the goulash I grew up on. It was this... basically macaroni and beef. I grew up on Hungarian goulash, a very very different dish. Don't get me wrong. Macaroni and beef is great comfort food but it will never be goulash to me.

I love the memories. Sounds a lot like our family in some ways. Mom made her goulasch without Italian spices. She used tomatoes, onions, garlic and chili powder but not a lot of each. She used hamburger and a lot of tomatoes. Ours was GREAT and now at 88 she can't recall how she made it. So I'll try this recipe instead.

Hey, Steve! It's woos-ti-sher sause! All the extra syllables don't help, regardless how other people say it, it's pronounced this way! The oo isn't as if you were saying rOOster, it's more like if you were calling someone a woos! I hope that makes sense! Great recipe! It takes me back to my childhood! We ate a lot of goulash! I'm 69 now and this DOES bring back memories! I loved mom's goulash! I wish she were still with us! Thanks!

My grandma used to make goulash. It had lots of different vegetables in it (peppers, onions, celery, carrots, mushrooms, corn, peas, canned tomatoes). She didn't use pasta sauce in hers. She used beef oxo to make more of a beef gravy. The spices were garlic, parsley, paprika, salt, pepper a bay leaf and maybe a small bit of oregano. She browned the meat first, then added the garlic and hard vegetables. She added the tomatoes, Oxo and herbs last and then let it simmer on low for a couple of hours. We ate ours over rice. I've never seen it with noodles before. Interesting how there are different recipes. ;)

I grew up on a farm in very NE corner of Missouri about a 10 minute drive from SE Iowa. This was a favorite meal that my mother made. Here's was perhaps a bit simpler. I make it often with only one modification. I use 1lbs hamb, 1lb Ital sausage, brown with diced green pepper and diced onion. Add 3-4 minced garlic cloves when onion and green pepper start to get tender. Drain grease. To large pot, add 1 large can and 1 smaller can diced tomatoes and 1 large can and 1 smaller can tomatoe sauce. Add meat mixture, oregano, basil, italian seasoning, red pepper flakes, and 1-2 tbs of sugar. Don't go overboard on red pepper flakes or it will be too spicy. Let simmer. Meanwhile cook 1 1/2cups to 2cups of elbow macaroni until just al dente or just before. Add to sauce. Very good sprinkled with parmesan and served with garlic bread or bread and butter!!

Just to let everyone know, we've come back on 11-15-2022, and we are going to make Shotgun's Goulash. I never had it before until I tried it on Tuesday, August 08, 2017 because of Shotgun Red. Then, we cooked it again on 01-12-2020 Sunday. The only notes we made to change were: "Next time, will add 3 cans of stewed tomatoes and 3 cans of diced tomatoes." Also, we commented: "Additionally, found out that cornbread goes really well with this." So, we miss getting to see new Shotgun's Cooking videos, but we'll also be thankful for what he gave all of us.

Love so many of the videos on this channel. Got so much to make, bake lol. Thank you to everyone on cooking with Shotgun Red. I been watching for awhile. Sad to hear Steve passed away. may he rest in peace with the Lord above. Amazing cooking, baking on this channel. God bless you all. Also one last thing, when Steve mentioned how cooking brings all the memories back. That is 100% so true. No matter where we all came from, however we made our foods, or baking, we will always remember memories of our parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles cooking and we grow up to share their recipes and then we pass it down to our kids and they will share their memories with their kids, and it is amazing how cooking can bring us all together, and share such amazing, funny memories.

Hiya hun 😘I saw this video a few days ago and decided to subscribe to you. I made this for my husband today and he hates one pot meals. But you made me remember my Mom's recipe and I had to make it. Now for some reason all the stores are out of Boulogne cubes etc. So I told him just get me 4 beef Rehman noodles and I used the packets in my water before I added it. Then I put paprika, chili powder, garlic powder and Italian season with the onions and green bell peppers. I used 1 table spoon of soy sauce and of course the diced tomato and stewed tomatoes and a bit of spaghetti sauce. And the big elbow macaroni. I added 1 small can of chopped mushrooms. Then of 3 bay leaves. My husband not only ate it all up but went for seconds and asked to have it for dinner with cornbread 😋. Oh to get him to love it I added some Cajun season to it. Ty so much for bringing back memories of my Mama. Don't worry I didn't forget the salt and pepper. Here it's just a given 😅🇺🇲🥰🥰💜

I just discovered this channel and this is the first video I’ve watched. We never had goulash at home when I was growing up, and it’s not because I’m young - I’m 65!) and we never had just bread and butter on the table unless it was a special crusty loaf to go with stew. I remember the first time I went to somebody’s home for dinner and they put a loaf of commercial white sandwich bread and a butter dish on the table with the main dish. I was mystified because dinner was obviously not a sandwich! 😄 I had goulash for the first time in my jr high/high school cafeteria. This was back when women actually ran a big kitchen and prepared actual meals. Fridays were a choice of a hamburgers or a fish sandwich so goulash was a staple, alternating with chili, on Mondays. They chopped or ground the leftover hamburger patties (and presumably either cooked extra on Fridays or cooked more on Mondays to have enough. And, yes, they served sliced white bread and butter! It was never my fave, but it wasn’t terrible either. It fit perfectly with the basic ingredients that the government supplied to the school, which kept lunch prices to 40-45 cents for a main dish, a vegetable, a side like applesauce or cottage cheese or a piece of fruit, a small dessert (cake, cobbler, pudding, jello, sometimes an ice cream bar) and milk! And it wasn’t packaged junk. I think they may have charged an extra few cents for chocolate milk and you could buy extra portions of any part of the meal for very little. Anyway, short story long 😂😂, I also haven’t had goulash since I graduated high school! But this is appealing to me, so I think I may cut this in half, turn my back on keto today, and give it a try! He looks like he was a such a wonderful person and I was sorry to read that he’s gone and I missed him! But I’ll be binge-watching the old videos. 💕

I loved your stories. Jiffy pop was so fun. Kid's don't know what their missing out on sitting around the tv like you mentioned. Yup the wolfman was scary! Even the Wizard Of Oz lol, which only came on once a year I believe, maybe twice at some point. You are so right about having bread and butter with goulash; it went hand and hand. I'm looking at goulash recipes to see if I can come up with what mom made when we were kids. All I remember is hamburg, onion, bell pepper, tomato paste & sauce, flat noodles. I couldn't tell you what spices accept salt/pepper. I see some people cook the noodles like you did, some cook separately then add in. For the life of me idk how mom did it. I don't remember her having 2 large pots going, as she only had one that would cook that amount. Thanks for bringing up some good 'ol memories for me.

This is quite similar to one of my family's favourite meals, I call slop, ha ha. It varies with whatever meat I have on hand (ground beef, ground turkey, bits of pot roast, whatever), and the veggies I have in the fridge or freezer. I serve it with pasta or egg noodles. Instead of a tomato-based sauce, I'll often use cream of celery soup, mushroom soup (or both) thinned with a bit of milk, and this variation is so delicious

I remember Goulash, but Mom didn't have any Beef to put in it...! I'd have to grind up some Venison for it, before the sun went down (it's hard to see using Kerosene Lamps, 'cause we didn't have electricity 'til around '55 or '56!). We didn't have it often, 'cause any kind of Pasta costs MONEY that we didn't have much of! So glad I live in an "Electric World" now! Haha! (No more huntin' for food, choppin' wood for heat and cookin', and no more fillin' those Aladdin Lamps every afternoon for LIGHT...!) Haha!

What a great recipe and story! Thank you so much! As kids, my buddy Bill and I were thick as theives! From time to time, he'd ask his mom if I could stay for dinner. Together, we'd make our version of goulash, similar to yours and your Aunt Lorrie's. It was always a big hit! We have been friends for over sixty years, and seperated by several hundred miles! Life is good! Thanks for your great videos! I am a fan! I only wish I'd seen your page a lot sooner. God Bless you, and thanks, Sheila, for keeping Steve's memory alive. I feel like I've lost a good pal.
