Hello I dont know what Im experiencing. I sometimes have exertion headaches - those caused by strenous physical activities like exercising and lifting. And usually I see squiggly rootlike lines when I wake up. It appears as I blink my eyes and fades in 1 second.. Im also usually very lethargic when I experience that.. Sometimes, it's not squiggly lines but transparent spots that fill my vision.. Sometimes they sparkle... Doctors have looked into my retina and they say nothing serious about it.. They also dont know what they are... Looking at computer screen trigger my migraine/weakness ..
God Loves Me and You np I just told u cuz I have similar symptoms and have anemia so.... what you can do is if your below 15 go to pediatric if your above 15 consult a gp
Mine are really colorful, triangular shaped patterns start forming on a crescent shaped aura. The colorful triangles move along the crescent. My vision resembles the common colorful optical illusion pictures you can find online, it's trippy
You're not alone. It is a most cruel malady and, hopefully, medical science will conquer it one day. I've had migraine for over forty years. They will always terrify me. God bless.
@@elposho23 Yes. My visual attacks have worsened over the years. At 64 my first attack was at 22. Veteran, but never cease to scare and frustrate me. God bless and keep safe 🙏
It is absolutely terrifying when it happens, especially when I am on the metro or far from home and then all of a sudden can’t see. I have found mine are triggered when I’m overworking, not getting enough sleep or dehydrated.. when properly hydrated, the aura migraine episodes will rarely occur. Sending love to anyone else living with hidden disabilities 💙
I’m just wondering have you Always had migraines? I never had a headache in my life and definitely not a migraine it was only when I went to have dental surgery and they use lidocaine that was when I started having them and it’s been now two years.. I’m downhill ever since... And yes you’re right it’s very frightening; because when It first happened I thought I was losing my sight I’ve been to five different specialists and a Neurologist... I changed my dentist and the new dentist said she hit a nerve.. I’m just wondering how many people got this from having dental surgery and don’t realize it? Any input..?
I describe my experience as looking upon blacktop in summer where you see the heat radiating of the blacktop. I also get the blindness. My warning to take ibuprofen right away. I never want to get that headache again. At 65, not one doctor seemed to care so I handle it myself with the ibuprofen. One I had a very bad job working for several doctors. I had these attacks everyday for weeks. Sometimes several times a day. I quit the job and they stopped happening daily.
@@kellyprice1024 Yes, its exactly like the heat rising off a hot car roof in the summer. That's what my first one was like, but then the other day I got the waves but also had a strange geometric, zigzag pattern over the top. I was in awe about how the brain can produce such intricate patterns. Luckily I don't seem to get the headache, just the auras. I think its to do with dehydration.
Ive suffered with these for about 5 years now, and I've found that the biggest trigger for me is dehydration. Drinking water as soon as I notice the aura start actually reduces the severity of headache afterwards. Just something worth trying for anyone who wants ideas.
You scared the shit out of me when you showed an example of what the Aura looks like. Thank god I now know that I’m not alone in this and will be fine. How’s everybody’s day going?
The vast majority of doctors don't know what it is. They just don't know. I had to figure it out for myself. I have put up with them so long and it never killed me, so I figured that I would just have to live with it.
@@jimbobaggans1564 I've had it since 16 im 36 now. I already tried to eliminate aspartame and artificial sugars... but sometimes just stress makes it appear. It sux because most people think I have anxiety due to fear no I have anxiety due to migraine and being stuck somewhere blind.
That is because, unless they have the problem, they don't care. They are only there to make money, be the hero and help you to see that he is better than you are.
I've lived with this most of my life and had no idea what, exactly, was going on or what is was called. As a teenager, when I saw the aura begin, I'd simply start sobbing because I knew what was coming. I'd call my mother, she'd pick me up from school and I'd go home to experience the migraine that was coming. It was debilitating. Now, as an adult, I still experience the auras, but the migraines have thankfully stopped. So nice to put a name on this! Thank you for this video!
Your comment that when you started getting the aura you’d cry and leave school hit so hard. I’ve been getting classic migraines since I was 7, and I can’t begin to explain how many times I’ve had to do this. Even now, as an adult, I still sometimes have to go up to my boss, almost in tears, and explain I have to leave. It’s such a helpless feeling. I’m so glad you’ve got relief from the headache itself! I hope mine fade away too 🥺
I have also suffered from migraines since I was little, I can say that they improved when I started exercising, but just yesterday I had one and it was the worst!
If it happens, try to sleep immediately, it happenes to me many times but when i close my eyes and sleep even for 5 minutes it goes away immediately but headache is still there
@@LaraSchilling I honestly had no idea so many had the same problem - even the exact same C shape on the left eye! Goddamn that fuzzy little demon! The amount of times ive been ready, about to leave the house, and the tiny little fuzz shows up, and i have to tell my friends ive got to lie in a dark room for the next 4 hours - theyre always so confused. And theres the times you find yourself in a situation where youre out and theres nowhere to go, now that is literal hell for me. I had it recently where i was just landing on a plane( not a fan of planes so i was fairly stressed) and i started getting the fuzz - had to go through passport control blind, and then a busy train for 45 mins before i could lie down, honestly thought i was going to die lol. Sometimes ill look at a lightbulb or something by accident and get an after image, and even though i know its not a migraine i panic that it might be one xD. ( sorry for the long message btw, i never get to vent to someone who truely understands! )
Perfect description of my experience....starts gray then becomes a crescent of sparkling, triangular rainbow crystal like items that then slowly fade after 15 to 30 min. My eye doctor says they are ocular migraines. They are mostly annoying, but like an earthquake, you wonder how long they will last and will they come back right away.
I've been suffering from this eye migraine for 5 years already.I tried telling my parents about this but they always say that I used too much cellphone that's why.I don't know what's happening to me until I saw this one, thanks I'll be able to explain to my parents about this.
I know of three teenage boys who have migraines. One has to go to the hospital when it happens. Next time you are at the doctors for anything, just mention it to the doctor and ask can they help you. Or, can they send you to someone for help. If your parents won't take you serious, that is. Do you live in or near NC? If so, there is a doctor in raleigh who works with these patients.
I experienced mine with visual and hearing loss. I thought I was going deaf and blind at the same time. It's terrifying once you dont know tf is going on
Yep. I left my experience with it below. I was terrified until I saw my eye doctor. She explained it as any other migraine, but that you can literally see it coming! Prescribed sleep and better nutrition, and thankfully for me that did the trick. I was terrified when it first started though.
mine was with blindness from the rainbow aura and then a loud deafening ringing that drowned out all other noise around me to where all i heard was the piercing ringing. I was at work working on a Machine, had to totally step back and stop and sit down in the middle of the floor and hit the emergency stop on the machine. I was totally blind. scared the crap outta me.
When it first happened to me, I was inconsolable because I had no idea what was happening and I thought I was having a stroke. It's terrifying! Thank you for the video with detailed terms- knowledge is power.
Bro, it just happened to me for the first time ever, it looked like the scrolling dead pixels of a broken screen, and I legit thought I was going blind. Absolutely frightening experience. Thanks to God, I didn't have any migraine with it
@@mademoisellepapillon706 I am truly sorry. My last one lasted just under 2 weeks. Full blown then cloudy then full blown again. Hope yours dissipates with haste. P.s. I wore an eye patch which helped.
I'm not even partway through the video, and I'm already so grateful that there is information on this because I believe I just experienced one and I feel more relaxed being able to identify it and seek further help.
My husband had this occur about 35 years ago. About 10 years later I started having them. Both of our daughters have also experienced them. Luckily we don't have migraines with them. My husband had the MRI and vision scan, but nothing found. It starts with the amnesiatic spot, then the scintillating scatoma, that passes within 20 min. Thought perhaps glaring light, but I have awakened in the night with them! I find I get them in clusters, like twice in 3 days, then go months or years without another. Both eyes are affected. I just do something big, like washing dishes until it passes. Annoying, but no longer scary. Thanks for you good description.
When I first started seeing these auras they were always followed by the migraine headache. That was nearly 40 years ago. I reframed my appreciation for this warning signal so that I could get off the road or seek a quiet place to lie down which made my migraines far less intense and of less duration. By learning some meditation and breathing techniques I was able to reduce the migraine experience to just a short headache lasting perhaps 10 minutes to finally having no headaches at all but I still get the auras. Now when they come, I take just a few moments or minutes to stop what I’m doing change my breathing and the aura is usually diminished within a few minutes instead of lasting over an hour which they used to do. Mine seem to be related to low blood sugar or the release of tension that I’ve been holding in my neck and shoulders. It is comforting, and sad, to find out that there are many others who also suffer with this experience. Thank you for this informative video.
Can I ask what kind of meditation & breathing techniques did you do? My headache after experiencing the aura usually lasts up to 2 hours long, even with medication help. The throbbing is also very intense & make me feel nausea too :( need help
LN I’m saddened to hear that you are in pain sometimes. I don’ know if this will help or not but over time things did eventually get better for me. For me what really helped was to lie down on the earth if possible. If it is not possible then imagine yourself in a safe place outdoors with your body on the earth. Roll up a small/face towel and place it under the neck so it is supported. Close eyes . Let the breath naturally slow and deepen. Allow your awareness to attach to the rhythm of the breath while also allowing relaxation to loosen as much tension as you can. In this deeply relaxed state imagine channels of energy, however you may see or experience it in this session, to begin to slowly flow from the forehead gently downwards along the scalp as if it were long hair spreading out onto the earth...either the real earth under you or the imagined earth. Allow this to feel like a waterfall in slow motion as the energy channels from the forehead and face along your scalp then down and INTO the earth. Imagine the earth helping to generate this flow as it receives the streams of energy from your head. Do this for as long as you are guided to do so or for as long as you can maintain the experience. When you feel cleansed, re-focus on the deep rhythmic breathing and very, very slowly begin to become aware again of your surroundings but keeping your eyes closed. If the aura pattern is still there then go back in and repeat the process if you can. Try not to come back to a fully awakened state until the aura is gone. If the aura is gone, then move to a quiet place with little to no stimulation and continue to remain relaxed for as long as possible. Over time this exercise gets easier and more effective. Eventually I was able to tap into my recollection of the process even when I could not lie down. I could, with eyes closed and focused breathing still do it even in a public place if necessary, but only after many practice sessions. Drinking some warm, sweet herbal tea ( not hot or with stimulants ) before this exercise was helpful if I caught it early enough, but more important was to get horizontal and on the earth if possible. I even carried a hand towel with me in case I ever needed to take a “time out”. Supporting the neck is important so make sure you have a good way of doing so. If possible a cool damp cloth over the eyes was often helpful but don’t let it become a distraction.... just doing the breathing and energy work was more important. One more thing; HOW you envision those energy streams moving from forehead to earth may change... from session to session or even within a single session. It is best to allow whatever visualization you come up with for that moment and just try to witness and go with whatever form the energy streams want to take... just remain as attentive but relaxed as you can... just let the feeling of the flowing of the energy be what holds your attention. I hope that helps. For me it was not instantaneous relief, but there was improvement within and after the session. More importantly there was improvement over time with each event generally being less intense and of shorter duration. Not every one, but over the years yes. After about 3 years of applying this process I could interrupt and drastically reduce these migraines to be a minor inconvenience that would resolve completely in 15-20 minutes, even less time as I continued to practice. I hope you can find something that will work for you too. 💖🙏💜
@@greenspiritarts thank you so much for explaining it in details, greatly appreciated it! I'll definitely try what you suggested, really hope it works after some practice❤️❤️ Once again, thanks for taking the time to help me out! :")
Sometimes I wake up with one and can ‘see’ the aura before I even open my eyes. Your animation of the multi coloured zig zag crescent was spot on for mine.
I have had a migraine with aura 2 times when I woke up and it freaked me out. Not a great thing to wake up to in the morning and it set the tone for those days!
I have often seen the aura in my sleep and that wakes me up and then sure enough the migraine hits like a knife in the back of my head. That multi colored zig zag aura is exactly what I see and the pulsing of it makes me nauseous. I have found that putting an ice pack on the back of my head helps it go away faster. When I do get the aura all I want in the world is to be in complete total darkness as any light source seems to make it so much worse.
I have that condition...with no physical pain or aches, just the visual aura alone. They occur randomly...perhaps six times a year or less. Lasts about 3-4 minutes. Both eyes are effected. Thank you for this important information!
Me too! I also have the splitting headache migraines, but never in combination with the visual migraine. The visual ones are just annoying. First time I freaked out though
Finally! I found an answer to this weird phenomenon in my eyes. The first time I experienced this about a decade ago I thought I was going blind. It was nuts. I call it the ‘broken glass snake.’ It started as a small flickering kaleidoscope that began to expand and took on the appearance of a snake. It reminded me of looking through a cracked window. I closed my eyes and could still see it. That’s was the scary part. After about 10 mins it faded away. They always start in my my left eye and then shift to the right eye. I still get them every once in a while but I do not get the headaches. My first reaction was too much screen time on the computer. But then I thought, nah, if that’s the case I probably should get them more often. They happen about every two months. Fortunately I have not experienced it while driving. I tried describing these events to a couple optometrists when I needed new glasses, but they had no idea what I was talking about and looked at me like I was loon. I think it’s time to find a well-versed eye doctor and not rely on these eye check-up testers who work at visions centers that try to sell you $500 Ray Ban glasses! Thank you, Dr. Allen!
It's called a scintillating scotoma. You need an ophthalmologist to look at it, which is a doctor of the eye and not an optometrist who just deals with vision correction. I first started having them in like 1979 before computer screens. As you get older, the scotomas come and go without accompanying headaches but I still suffer from regular migraines. Sometimes I get these scotomas 2 or 3 in a row in less than 2 ours. Can be really frustrating.
@@tsicby , thanks Johnny! That’s exactly what it is. I looked it up and saw a animated depiction of it. I’ll take your advice a look into an ophthalmologist.
I called mine the "Flashing snake" when I was a little kid. Mine start out as a tiny pulsating rainbow arc with a slow pulsing side and a fast side that get larger and larger over 20-30 min. There is always a part that is zig zag yellow and black. The amount of rainbow and yellow/black varies. Sometimes the colored areas are very large and intense and I enjoy looking at them very much. I've had them thousands of times over my 65 years and never have had a headache with one. I have zero problems driving when I'm having one, it's just a little light arc. I can see through and around it fine. If you are worried about them, go see an actual eye doctor.
I had my first one when I was in primary school, I had to read out loud in class and wasn't able to because the words had disappeared. then when I looked up, everything was only half visible. Incredibly scary for a 10 year old. It's how my migraines always start, a warning sign to get myself in bed as quick as I can.
So relatable! I had the same thing, had to read out loud in class and I said I couldn’t read it but the teacher thought I was just exaggerating, later I got the headache and asked to go home but they still wouldn’t believe me. Had to sit through it for 2 hours. Now as soon as I see the aura’s I take a painkiller and go to bed. I’m glad I had my mother telling me what those aura’s were.
@@Diedela Oh poor you that must have been awful. I hate my auras, but they are a great warning system. When I notice I can't see properly (I usually check my hand) I know I need to take medication and get in bed pronto!
Same thing happened to me. I noticed this first time when I was in high school reading out loud in the class and suddenly things started fading beginning with a faded black spot and later developing into a bright zigzag arc shaped line. I managed to complete the reading of my part with the partial vision. But it caused a lot of distress to me. Second time it happened after 5 years from first incident and after that it became a regular occurring pattern once in few months. It was very difficult for me to convey this to the doctors (both Ophthalmologist / Neurologist) because they didn’t find anything abnormal in my eyes. When I explained this issue, they never believed. I found that too much concentration or stressful thinking triggered this aura migraine for me.
@@santoshrajput23 It's horrible, isn't it? It always reminds me of when on a tv program they try to make someone unrecognisable, or blur something out. They will often use the same kind of zigzag patterned shape. Good job on finding your triggers! Hope the migraines will become less and less for you.
Mine looks like multi coloured, prismatic lightning. It's rather annoying. Started happening a lot more since the sun came out for Spring the past few days, before that first time was a few months earlier.
Doctor Eye Health it’s weird for some reason mine kind of a pattern I get one in the spring summer and early fall. Like April, June and the middle of august
for me, it's as if my peripheral vision gets smaller and my mouth, nose, and/or hand goes numb. i was supposed to get a scan done to make sure i wasn't having seizures but they never got back to me. the first time i had that problem, i was in 7th grade in language arts. i was writing and my mouth was going numb and i was like "huh, that's weird...oh well" then my nose went numb. then, my peripheral vision got smaller. i was trying to write but i could hardly see it correctly. then my head started hurting and i got up to tell my teacher, who I'm still friends with, so i trusted him. when i stood up, i got dizzy and i could hardly see where i was going so i sat back down and told my friend "i think I'm dying lol". she told me to tell my teacher and i got up, stumbled to his desk, explained it to him, and he was like "oh lord- i have no idea. you'll have to go to the nurse. I'll have your friend walk you there to make sure you get there okay. the nurse gave me water and 2 salteens before having me call my mom and then sending me back to class.
At 5yrs old I experienced a devastating migraine with aura attack, I remember waking up stretched out on the couch with a cold cloth on my forehead and my mom trying to give me baby aspirin and water. Our home was really stressful, insane domestic violence happened every day and I would get sick when I was most scared so I knew my episodes were related to stress. It's tough to explain what's happening when you are that young, eventually, I started getting punished for saying that I was sick, I was told that I was trying to get out of chores so I tried to keep it to myself as much as possible. Thanks for sharing this information, great video.
Hey I just wanted to say thank you for sharing. Stress like that as a kid is horrible. I know I struggled through some tough family and domestic issues growing up too. Either way, I appreciate you for sharing that.
Just experienced this for the first time in my life of 29 yrs.....I literally thought I was going blind...it suddenly happened and lasted about 30 minutes. I tried figuring out what it was and couldn't find anything til your video. Thanks for making me feel better and that I'm not going blind😭
Wow, EXACTLY my experience, I'm 29 as well, as the blind spot slowly enlarged (visible in both eyes) I was concerned the vision may not return but then it expanded beyond my periphery and finally disappeared in just under a half hour. First time it has happened in my life as well. The colored triangles and such around the outside and the flashing are quite an experience, so glad I was able to find confirmation of what's going on without a trip to the ER like I first imagined was going to be necessary.
@@chadjacob8479 Sounds just like mine. This is my 3rd one in probably 6-8 months so seems like it had a pattern of happening every 2-3 months. I'm 28 and the first one just looked like TV static. Really freaked me out. 3rd one had a lot of color to it towards the end and was flashing. Wondering if I should see a doctor
@@sean48611 i know this is extremely late but if you really haven’t: yes, go get some advice from a doctor and get it checked out even if its just migraines! if you already did, how has it been? i suffer from migraine auras about once a month and i will never stop being terrified of them ever.
I was really scared when I experienced this for the first time today. The animations of what the aura look like were hugely helpful to explain what I was experiencing to my family. Thank you for making this video!
I had one of these and thought it was an absolutely isolated and solitary experience. Then I explained it to my friend who has frequent bad migraines, and he was like "Yep, I've had these all the time". I can now sympathize with him greatly.

I have been having these since I was in my teens. Never knew what they were or how to describe them to my doctor to find out what they were. I see them in both eyes at the same time. Always gray with twitters around the edges. I actually think they are in my brain and not my eyes since I know I see them in both eyes at the same time. I have tried closing one eye and then the other but I can always still see them. No pain. I am so glad to finally have someone talk about them. At this point in my life (I am 80) I feel very comfortable that mine are harmless. I can go years without having one. And then I may have several in a short time. Never, ever any pain.
My experience is pretty much identical to yours. All visual and no pain. I had the first one when I was 35 and it scared the heck out of me and I'm 68 and still have them once in a while. Sometimes a few days in a row and then not for a few weeks. Years ago I ran across an article from a Swedish doctor that described them perfectly and he said they were a side effect of having a hole in the heart !
Pretty much the same for me except that as a teenager I actually went numb in half of my body for about 30 min. before it progressed to a horrible headache for hours. The numbness and headaches stopped after my teens, but I still get the eye squiggles occasionally, at least, thankfully, no pain. I am 73
I’ve had the same experience since I was in my early teens…no migraines, just the visual aura in both eyes. I got them less frequently as an adult, but I still get one once in a while in my 60s. Mine last about 20 minutes from start to finish.
That's what I get, too. It's only happened twice and I'm 66. No pain or anything. I never mentioned it to my doctor since there's nothing to be done about it.
HALWG51 same here. But my auras are little and last seconds to minutes im going crazy cause i dont know if this is still aura cause it doesn’t expand to whole vision. Do you know anything about this?
This is probably the best way i've seen/heard this explained. I have trouble explaining it to people when I go through it because its SO difficult to tell someone what I see when theyve never had it happen to them. I almost always get a migraine AFTER but not usually ever before.
I'm 63, male, and had my first of these aura experiences just over 2 years ago. It was very frightening and I was advised by NHS helpline to go straight to A and E because I might be having a stroke, which I did. After waiting some considerable time i was seen by a doctor who confirmed I had not had a stroke. They didn't offer any explanation and never mentioned the word migraine. I've since visited my optician who examined my eyes and said there was nothing wrong, other than my pre existing ocular hypertension but the aura weren't caused by that. Your description and animation are very accurate. It starts as a small part of my vision, near the centre, that seems to disappear, for example a letter of a word if I'm reading something. This then expands to form a small bright zig zag line and then expands to form a shimmering curved rainbow effect that arcs around the top right or left of my field of vision. Over about five to eight minutes that shimmering rainbow then slowly moves down to the side of my vision and then disappears quite quickly. I never have any headache before during or after the experience and I feel normal afterwards. It does make you feel very anxious but after you've had a few you know what to expect. I have about 2 of these events per year. It's very reassuring to know that I'm not alone in suffering them but I do wonder what causes it and why this should start in my older age. It's also interesting that none of the health professionals that I spoke to mentioned or seemed to know about ocular migraine other than my optician. Thanks so much for your video.
I've had classic migraines with aura since I was 14. In my early 50's I also started getting ocular migraines as well. I averaged about 1 a week. No medication ever helped the migraines. In May I reluctantly started taking a statin to reduce my cholesterol. A side effect for so e people is reduced migraines. So far I'm 5 months migraine free!
Statins also relax muscular tissue. Some migraines are caused by spasms in an artery going into the head. Makes sense the statins relieved this. I put Voltarin on my neck if a migraine is starting. Does the job.
Had a aura yesterday but no headache no vomiting, my migraines have really reduced in the last ten years I'm 62.Only people who experience migraines know the suffering, like you no medication helps whatsoever.
A Magnesium supplement is also a great idea. I've had migraines since I was 6...It wasn't until pregnancy when my OBGYN prescribed 400 mg of Magnesium daily as a substitute for my traditional medication routine.
Eye Health QOTD: Have you ever experienced an Aura? Do you get migraines? Do you have any tips of your own to help improve migraine headaches or prevent them?
Hello for a few months now my vision has been looking staticy or like something from an old film. I have done research and think it could be visual snow.I also have ocular migranes. Is there any way to stop my vision from looking staticy?
The best answer is to make an eye appointment to be seen if you haven't had one recently. Make sure everything is in good shape and your doctor can give you tailored personal advice on how to improve your vision. Tami Green is right about the blood pressure, blood pressure can cause problems for the eyes too. Also be sure to eat a healthy diet made of lots of fruits and vegetables...and then more vegetables. (best for the eyes)
I have a problem where i see colour spots and colour patterns i saw my doctor he referred me to an eye doctor they checked for retinal detachment i didn't have that they then checked the pressure in both of my eyes that came up normal i'm still waiting to see a opthalmologist i got referred last year but still haven't got a appointment date because i'm going through the public health system
Have had migraine with aura for years but they're getting a lot less recently. They always appear 15 ish minutes before the migraine itself, which is very handy so I can take some pain relief & find a bed/couch in time. Used to happen at school a lot which was pretty funny, as there weren't any sleepable places there (I need to sleep with migraines or I'll get really sick). I've slept in the strangest places there: outside on the gym fields, in the middle of the break room, changing rooms etc. Sugar, the dark, pain meds and sleep were the best cure.
I'm 15 years old, with a diagnosed panic disorder. I started having this when I was like 13, when it first happened it scared me to death, I was, and still am so afraid of going blind. But knowing that im not the only person experiencing this, and that theres a name for this helps a lot. The visual aura shows up in both my eyes, but it always in my left feild of vision, it just continuously flashes, like static. It forms as a small dot at first. But then evolves into a C shape, it normally lasts from anywhere to 5-60 minutes. This one time, it lasted a good 30 minutes, then went away, then came back, i was actually so scared. I havent really told anyone but my parents, and once my neurologist. I also have severe vertigo and am in the process of diagnosing it. I've had MRIs done, and have an EEG scheduled to test for seizures. I hope this will all stop, its really scary. But even if it doesnt go away, i'm going to continue living, and not let this get in my way of doing things I enjoy. I really appreciate this video, it makes me feel a whoel lot safer, thank you.
Good for you, not letting it keep you from doing what you want! I don't let it slow me down either. I rarely get a headache so I am very thankful for that.
Ah, sweetie, there are medications to help prevent the symptoms and to stop them when they start. Talk to your neurologist about them and don’t suffer with the headaches or auras. They can be treated so they’re not so bad. I promise it can be better. Talk about them so people know what’s happening to you and can help you get rest and in a quiet place when you need it. Be better.
When mine start up, I take two advil (ibuprophen) and a cup of black coffee, I grab an ice pack and put it on the back of my neck and lie down. This usually gets rid of the headache in about 1/2 hour. Taking a magnesium supplement stopped my vertigo. I was fortunate that I had doctors tell me this.
YES i had that years ago and thought i was having a stroke and drove myself to the hospital! They didn't know what happened and sent me on my way. Thanks for the video!
I find that especially on days when we go from a (atmospheric) low pressure system to a high pressure system (think very sunny, very dry cold winter day) I will usually get one and sometimes two aura migraines. It is like you describe, starting with a blind spot except that it is more like a colorful, vibrating ring (not necessarily a complete ring) of pins and needles that are tight together at first and then over about 15 to 20 minutes, the ring will expand and disappear. I can locate it in my field of vision by staring straight ahead and if I cover my right eye, it is still there, if I cover my left eye, it is still there. I can "see" it even when I close my eyes, a ring of flickering, vibrating colorful pins and needles. They used to be followed by a bad headache but now they go away and I do not have headaches. I am 61 years old and can remember having these since my early teens.
I had migraines for years. Fortunately, I found relief (almost a cure!) by not eating MSG, and hidden MSG ingredients. I’ve had a few relapses, but have been headache free for about 700 days. Just wanted to share this in case it helps someone. Relief’s out there folks, you’ll find it. Keep going, and know that you’ll be okay. ❤️
@@krisztinaszabo6727 Monosodium Glutamate. It's a flavor enhancer that's put into a lot of American foods. The FDA doesn't require it to be labeled unless there's certain percentage in the food. So it's labeled under different names. If you look up "Hidden Names for MSG" there are lists online about it. Most people don't have a issue with MSG, but I personally know three people who cut it out of their diet and completely stopped having migraines, so it's definitely worth looking into!
@@julietharris2373 I went vegan for a while and my migraines stopped. I did this because I wanted to cut out MSG, but it became too complicated to distiguish which foods didn't have it and vegan was easier.
Thank you Dr Allen for the aura demonstration...it was spot on!! I find that the glare from headlights or sunshine flashing through the trees while driving almost always triggers a ocular migraine. I really enjoy your channel ☺
And many times I get them for no reason at all. I just get them. I think it must be human nature to try to figure out what is causing them. Over the years I have blamed them on a ton of things. I started with a brain tumor and went from there.
This happened to me for the first time this morning. I suddenly started having trouble reading the numbers and text in a video game, and by the time I got my glasses the shimmering sparkling lights had started. It was just a line on the left side of my vision at first, but it quickly grew into half of a ring of dancing/shimmering multi-colored lights constantly changing color and shape. I went to the ER because I didn't want to take chances with my vision, and by the time I had arrived there the lights were gone. All said, it lasted about 30 minutes. They did some tests to rule out scary stuff like a brain bleed, and ultimately they advised I see an ophthalmologist as soon as I could.
hi! Would you share an update to what it was, if you don’t mind of course ?🙏 I had this too the other day. No migraine, never had them, just had the auras and it scared the s**** out of me!!😢
@@dl7596 I've had a complete neurological workup including MRA. I've had these for 33 years. They last 20 minutes so I look at the clock when it starts. Two years ago it changed to a full field of vision. That came with vertigo, hence the workup. I was wondering today why the usual C shape was more 9f a U but while typing this it dawned on me I had cataract surgery with torix lenses to correct my astigmatism. Master it by timing it.
Yeah that’s how I got mine I only ever had 2 or 3 from gaming to close to the screen. I don’t sit close to the screen anymore. It does not happen anymore. It can also be called Gamers Eye. Yeah it’s scary
When I hear advice from a hairstylist I tend to see how nice their own hair is, when I hear a dermatologist I look at their skin but I’ve never paid attention to the eyes of an eye doctor Lol yours look so clear and healthy 👍🏼
I don't know if this will help you, I too had the same thing and I tried to avoid mobile phone screens and TV and computer screens and it goes away but l by it's own. Make sure you eat healthy, exercise too sweat and sleep for at least 8 hours a day, this will surely make it go away.
I'm so happy that I've found an explanation to this phenomenon, when I saw the thumbnail I immediatly recognised the thing that you've tried to represent. I've had this exact aura with migrane happen to me twice in life. It was a small blind spot, comperable to an imprint in your vision after looking at a bright light, that was getting bigger and bigger into a 'C' shape with a kind of zig-zagy or fuzzy texture. It lasted for about an hour or a bit more and then when it left my vision I had a terrible headache lasting about 3 hours. When I had experienced it for the first and then the second time I was terrified of this recurring who knows what thing, but now at least this video has calmed down my worries a bit. Thanks!
I was searching up, "what it looks like looking through a kaleidoscope" and this video popped up, and this is exactly what I experience with my auras, last night was the first time I had them twice, hours apart and once in each eye, it was also the first time i have actually noticed all the different colors on my auras. This was the best video representation I have came across. Thank you!
I had horrible migraines as a teen and in my early 20s. As I got older, the headaches stopped, but I developed the aura. Now that is the only symptom I get. I never did identify a consistent trigger, but now that I’m perimenopausal, they seem to have disappeared. They were definitely scary at first!
Thanks for explaining this phenomenon. I, too, have had these visual episodes since I was 8. I don't get headaches after an episode, thankfully. Mine are often triggered by glare from sunlight on a white surface like snow or a window behind something or someone I'm looking at. They usually go away in about 15 minutes. Thanks again for explaining it. 🙂
Some friendly feed back, please put a warning before the flashing aura demonstration. Flashing like that can trigger migraines or seizures in some people. Then I wanted to share some additional info. People who have hemiplegic migraines can get an aura that lasts 2-5 days followed by headache that lasts up to a month, but normally 4-7 days. This type of headache also causes nystagmas and one pupil to dilate while the other is normal and reacts to light. (you wouldn'tbelieve the number of head CTs and MRI's I've gotten over the years because my hemiplegic migraine symptoms scare doctors into thinking I have a bleed or stroke.) Migraines can cause permanent visual snow and/or permanent photosensitivity if you have them for years and years. This happened to me. I've had frequent migraines since childhood. And yes I got all the brain scans in the world and saw eye drs before they decided it was migraines that caused it. I have a heart condition so can't take triptans, then after years with antiepileptic drugs I had to stop those because they caused gastroparesis :/ No other migraine prevention drugs have worked for me. I want to try botox next. The other very important thing to be aware of is that in very very rare cases migraines can cause blindness. Basically during a migraine there is changes to blood flow and in some rare cases it can get cut off to some nerves. Most of the time it's temporary but if it happens over a long period like over 4 hours it can permanently damage the nerves. So my neuro explained to me that if I go totally blind during a migraine and the blindness lasts over 4 hours I have to go to ER for steroids to prevent it becoming permanent. The same can happen if a person goes completely deaf during a migraine. I do sometimes go completely blind during migraines but so far it hasn't lasted more than 30 min. when it's happened. If anyone here has severe migraines it's worth it to find a neuro that specializes in migraines. People don't realize that untreated frequent and severe migraine can cause permanent issues and I did not even know this until I saw a specialist. If you are at risk for status migraine or ever go totally blind or deaf with your migraines, get a letter from a neuro that details their recommended emergency treatment plus the dr contact info. It makes ER trips so much easier and you get drugs faster.
Have you gotten the CGRP's from your doctor yet? I have gotten several samples. And theres more down the turnpike. They have both preventative and acute now.
Hey guys plz read this. i hope this will help you guys. I have been through this pain and i know how Frurstrating it is and its also very hopeless when no one knows whats wrong with you. I had same symptoms of this migrane for years. I used to thought that this is nausea or some other disease. I would like to share my personal history and experince. I hope that it will help you guys. As far as i can remember first time i had this migrane with blind spots and pattern i was 15 at that time. it started as a small spot in any eye. and than grew into a large pattern and faded in 30 min. then i had severe pain in head and i felt nauseus and i vomitted. after vomiting i felt releif and got better. This used to happen to ke once or twice a year. When i was 19 I joined Military. I got 2 years Military training as military training is very rigrious and we have a very balanced diet during training i never had one migrane for complete tow years. However i didnt Realise this fact. Aftr my training my routine got a bit easy however as i was serving in military i did exercise regularly and had a fine diet. But this migrane came back but its intensity was low and it happend rarely once a year. After 8 years of my service in Military one day i had this migrane again.but man it was at a new level. I had almost lost my eyes i was unable to see plus i was hearing a strange voice in my head. This time it was intense. and after 30 min it went away but i had severe headache. I had to suffer this process atleast 3 to 4 times a day and it went on like this for a complete week. I was hopeless confused. Then i thought about it very seriously and searched on internet because my doctor was also not sure what to do. i came to know about this problem that i hve migrane with aura. Then i thought about it seriously and discussed it with 2,3 doctors. After a long disscussion and research i Realised that.... 1. There is some deficiency in my body or there is access of something in my body 2. i need to change my life style and my diet. I started hard this time . I exercise daily for 40-45 min mostly cardio. And i have a very balanced diet i have stoped eating junk food and i m taking zinc , magnesium and calcium alongwith some vitamins for supplemnts.(i take them on alternate days ) Its been a year. i have not experienced any migrane .
This was reassuring as I just experienced a retinal aura. Knowing it will usually go away on its own helped me not to panic. Haven’t gotten the headache yet & hope I don’t, but I will definitely see my doctor to see if they can determine why I had it. This is my 5th one so far but it’s been about 8 years since my last one. Thanks Doc! 👍
Having had hormonal monthly migraines with scintillating scotoma for 30 years, I now, post menopause, have only this aura left eye without headache. In my opinion women have a much higher incidence due to hormonal influence. Jeanne
When my aura happens, it’s always in fluorescent lights, usually in stores that have high powered super bright fluorescents, and even worse if they have super shiny floors.
Not indoor lights but bright sunlight with no sunglasses will trigger migraine for me an hour or so later. Also after a stressful situation ends. Had a period with really painful migraines to the point of throwing up but now just get the aura's occasionally without headaches.
I experienced an ocular migraine. No headache but a blind spot began near center left in field of vision. It then expanded to something that kinda freaked me out. I would describe it as what looked like a kaleidoscope around the periphery of my vision in both eyes that was very bright & very colorful. Lasted about 1/2 an hr. Got fully checked out & no incidence since but pretty unnerving for sure. I will say I had been having trouble getting a good nights sleep for a while beforehand as I was REALLY busy at wk. Given a very low dosage of melatonin 3 mg (sleep aid) & haven't had it happen again. Had no idea what was happening at the time though. It was reassuring to be able to I.D. what it was.
James, I've had several over the past few years. Thanks to the internet, I finally have learned about it. I have aura with no headache; but when I "see" it coming on, it's so disturbing I just go lie down for 30-45 minutes.
I've been having the same thing happen every so often, for the last 3 years or so. no headache, but like a kaleidoscope starting in a corner of one of my eyes, slowly becoming more circular, the working it way out the the edges of the eye..takes anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour to settle and go away.
This was one of the best explanations I’ve seen! I get retinal migraines intermittently. No headache, but my speech is affected. My triggers are excessive emotional stress, panic attacks, excessive caffeine, and sugar substitutes. It sucks.
I've been getting migraines since I was a teenager. It starts with a minute blind spot, so much so that if I looked you in the face, part of your face would be blanked out. After some time, I begin to see flashing, zig zag lights, after they stop the pain begins. I suffered for years and unfortunately I can't take any of the newer class of migraine medications because of contraindications from other medication I am on so I suffered in silence for many years. Happily I am now taking a prescription drug called Topiramate that was originally meant to treat seasures but has been found to be very effective for the treatment of migraines. It has been a godsend. I have been migraine free for three plus years now with no unpleasant side effects. I learned of this medication from an optometrist that I worked with who also suffered from debilitating migraines. Might be worth asking your doctor about. 😁
@@kathieoray2990 it’s seriously so crazy to see how many people are affected by this! Pre internet is when I was getting mine and I seriously thought I was the only person on the planet experiencing it! I would try to describe what I was going through and people thought I was nuts
I get these occular migranes 1-2 times per year. The visual is geometric and colorful and always starts small. It takes 5-10 minutes for it to move forward and completely pass me. It never blocks my vision because it is transparent. I have never had a head ache afterward. It started 15 years ago and doesn't bother me anymore. I find that the more relaxed I am, the faster it goes by.
I get migraines with aura and after a process of elimination, I found that these are triggered by a change in my sleep pattern (lack of sleep) and/or increased levels of emotional stress. Thanks for the video
I experienced my first one a week after my mom died unexpectedly. And yes, I thought I was going blind. Your video is one of the best illustrations I’ve ever seen and I have done plenty of research. Thank you.
this comment section and video made me feel so understood, all this time people thought i was a little crazy since the doctors couldn’t see something wrong.
Raymond Heckard I don’t feel so, if I go in dark, I still see that patch dancing. Even I have sometimes woken up from a dream of migraine finding that I actually had it. I see the patch even with my eyes closed.
Of course can still see them in the dark people, but for some (me too) it shortens the duration. Some people light is a trigger and an intensifier. I get them from bright lights sometimes.
@@compulsivecommenter990 Yeah. Everyone is different. What works for some doesnt work for others. Some people caffiene relieves them. Me it gives them to me.
My experience: Causes: lack of sleep, extremely stressful situations, eating too much sugar and smoking. I take 400-600 ml of Ibuprofen DURING the aura EPISODE, and the headache is mild or more manageable. Just keep ibuprofen handy (in my purse, in the car, at work.. etc). You never know when it gonna hit. One time it happen while driving. The headache lasted from 1-3 days. Healthier habits have decreased my migraines to 1 or 2 per year.
It happened to me for the first time ever two days ago. I am 29, and I was sure something terrible was happening-that I was possibly losing my vision in real time or that it was something really wrong and I might be dying. I rushed to the emergency room, where they fully tested my eyes. The next day, I had a CT of my brain, and I am going for an MRI in a month. Now that I have found these videos, I am less scared because this visualization is 100% what I experienced. Thank you. I wish everyone good health. ❤
When my vision gets bad and I know I migraine is starting, immediately take two 800 milligram Ibuprofens and find a dark place to lay down and close my eyes. After a few minutes the aura goes away and I avoid the headache. Once my vision returns I start guzzling water to dilute the ibuprofen. It works for me. I always carry two big 800 milligram pills in case I get a migraine while driving.
I do the same only I take 600 MG of ibuprofen, drink coffee, guzzle water and most important thing that helps is getting to that dark place to rest. Just lay there with eyes close with something over my eyes and relax as much as possible. It does seem to help keep the head pain part at bay.
I've experience this ocular migraine before and don't know what it was. But with the illustration and explanation, now I know what it is. And for me stress and less sleep triggers it.
I get these all of the time and they used to lead to migraines that would be debilitating for about 8 hours and then make me feel clumsy for around 2 days. I have learned to skip the migraine part by closing my eyes (keeping eyes closed but not shut tight) and putting my face up to a bright light and evening the light out left to right. Did it once by accident and now I do it every time I get one of the "auras" and I havent had the migraine part since doing this (going on 8 years). I only say this in case it helps someone else. Don't know if I just by coincidence lost the migraines naturally at the same time I closed my eyes because of a steady bright light while having one. But, either way it's been a blessing to me. (should add that I did go to the doctor and they did give me the preventative stuff. Only took it once though before the bright light thing. Haven't used it since finding this trick that works for me.)
interesting. That matches my experience that it helps me to look at my phone. The last thing you want to do when you have an aura is read emails (doesn't really work anyway), but just looking at whats app has been helpful somehow. Thanks for sharing this!
I have had them about 2 per year since 1985. They do not develop all the way nowadays, as I have found ways to stop them. They actually started after a bike accident, when a child ran on the bike path and I swerved and ran into a lamp post, then landed very roughly on my head. Exactly then, these symptoms appeard for the first time. After that, they came when triggered mainly by heat and stress. They are followed by word loss. I have to relearn some words afterwards. Also the accident caused an f/v confusion in my brain. In the German language the f and v sounds are the same. So I now always have to think about the morphology of the word when it starts with the f sound before writing it. A while ago I had some memory issue in the morning (could not remember the liscence no. of my dad's first car when I saw a similar one parked nearby. That was weird.) and then after a few hours it started. @@montecristo7963
I go through aura migraine since childhood and it took me over 20 years to find out what it was. In my case, it happens in both eyes and it covers 100% of my vision in milliseconds. I feel down in the middle of the street several times and doctors always said I was out of my mind and what I was describing didn't exist at all. It doesn't really matter how many times you go through this, it's always extremely frightening. It's good to see people talking about it, no one should ever hear things like I did, from doctors, especially when you're in pain - which, in my case, is insane - and fear.
This is one of the best and concise descriptions of the ocular migraine. I always had migraines-I'm a woman, so the migraines would always correspond with TOM, but I got my first ever ocular migraine 2 months ago. I was so frightened I went to see a doctor. My aura lasted 6 minutes and was followed by a headache. I will say that the headache was less intense than the regular migraines I get. I get them 9 times out of 10 months-courtesy of womanhood. And my maternal grandma had migraines and no one else in the family has it. I developed my first headache at the age of 4, before I could even read. Thank you genes.
Thank you Dr. No one that hasnt had migraine with aura understands. You explained it so well! This video really cope with my experiences with migraines with aura. Thank you soooo much!
I am 62. I had my first ocular migraine several years ago. I saw my eye doctor the same day and she diagnosed this, saying she also gets them! I had the symptoms at random intervals for a few years. It always began with a small bright spot in the center of my vision field, then it would grow into jagged lightning lines, which lasted about 20 minutes before they gradually moved to the edges and disappeared. I never had a headache with these symptoms. I had some strokes 2 years ago and I was prescribed daily aspirin. I have not had an ocular migraine since then, and my neurologist confirmed that some people who take daily aspirin have noticed that it prevents ocular migraines.
After lots of my own research and journaling, my emotional state, what I was doing or ate, etc. I’ve narrowed down my triggers. 1. Fast food, MSG & chemical additives. 2. STRESS/Anxiety 3. No sleep 4. Dehydration Once I worked really hard to eliminate and fix those things they went away for a year! I started eating bad again and not taking care of myself and they came back. I hope this helps someone as well. They are so terrifying and frustrating once they come on.
Very informative! Thank you, I no longer feel alien, and on my own with visual auras. I've never heard anyone describe it with such great accuracy and detail! I've had aura's for over 20 years now. My visual auras leave me literally blind. It was most frequent as a teenager, and as an adult, only when I'm under extreme emotional stress or tired. I've been told over the years, by others and their well-meaning diagnoses, that something is seriously wrong with me, or I'm probably diabetic or pre-diabetic...My mother, who developed diabetes later in adulthood, was convinced that her auras in childhood were an indication of pre-diabetes. So relieved that it's an aura and not diabetes. I was finally diagnosed this year with having auras, and have pretty perfect vision and definitely no sign of diabetes. Eating and drinking something sweet like a banana and fruit drink together, lessons the visual aura duration, from 30 min - 1 hour, down to about 15 minutes. Staying away from processed sugars during an episode helps me not quickly turn around and go right back into a visual aura. It makes sense because our brain is fueled by glucose. When I don't get the visual aura under control it can turn into a pretty bad headache. Hope that helps someone.
I am borderline diabetic, and I get these migraines. The episode though is always triggered by a bright light hitting my eyes such as sunlight reflecting off a shiney bumper, bright sun on snow, or looking at a diamond under intense bright lights. In retrospect the migraine episode does seem to happen after a previous day of eating way too many carbohydrates. I do crave sweets. Forcing myself to eat keto now. It wouldn't hurt for you to get a blood sugar monitor to test the sugar in your blood two hours after eating to see if carbohydrates are spiking your count high. After going too high it can then go way low causing dizziness. If you tend to have dizziness once in awhile you definitely want to keep that sugar in check.
I was experiencing this and started to have a panic attack over it so I had a big bowl to calm down and my eye thing went away after a few minutes...maybe it was just luck but figured it was worth sharing if anyone even reads this.
I've had my first one in 6th grade. It mostly happens when I'm on my phone or laptop but what I've noticed is that it never happens at night. Will these keep appearing for the rest of my life?
OMG, the colored, zig zag one at the beginning was the closest to what i see that I've come across. These are new to me at 43 and I'm kinda freaked out. Thanks for making me feel more validated. ❤
Wow! I just experienced this this morning and it’s like a kaleidoscope interrupting my vision. I’ve discovered taking extra strength Tylenol stops this .. I’m 69 now and this migraine comes less frequent. My first one was when I was 13 at school. It was more severe and followed by a numbness that worked itself down my left arm. I thought I was having a stroke. The migraine was intense but the Drs didn’t know what it was and prescribed Dar-van. Thanx but no thanx. I was so surprised to turn on RU-vid to find this video explaining exactly what I’ve been going through.
When my daughter was young, maybe about 11 or 12, she had an aura with numbness in one of her arms. I talked to her doctor about it who told me this happens sometimes and it was part of the migraine aura.
Great to hear from a doctor that actually suffers from migraine with aura. Most of my auras last around an hour. I take a Ubrelvy and it often stops the oncoming migraine, which can happen up to 24 hours later. I can’t do anything when the aura hits; it’s a full-stop situation. My father and sister had them. I’m 65 now and still get them. I also get Botox treatments for the migraines. Thanks for the video.
I started getting these, without the headache, a little over 3 years ago (I'm in my early 50s). When they've happened, they've lasted for about 30-35 minutes - a nearly exact duration for each instance. I'd say stress is a major factor for me, as is bright light, including occasionally afternoon sun or sunset sun, intense LED shop lights, and once, it happened while watching a movie being projected on a screen.
You described what I've experienced. I'm 51 and this started when I was 50. Mine have lasted between 20 minutes and 3 hours. I'm certain that stress is not a causing factor because I eliminate stress from my life. I'm more prone to believe that the backlight of a digital screen and leds are the triggers, but there may be something else underneath the surface. I don't own a TV, just a cell phone. 🤷♂️
I'm 66 and it happened to me at work for the first time ever.. I worried I was going to have a stroke. I was stressed and overworked at the time so I just laid down until it went away. Slightly nauseous feeling too. After an hour I was able to drive home. No pain. It was kind of like a lacey look or zig zags blocking my vision. It did remind me of a kaleidoscope or that word, pixilated, and I was surprised at how pretty it was - sort of golden lines that move and were semi transparent. It would have been impossible to drive.
I get the auras, occasionally. I'm not sure what brings it on, but I've gotten them since the 80's. The images in the video were pretty spot in. I always describe it as a moving kaleidoscope, made with glass shapes. I've learned that the minute I get them, I take ibruprofen, they go away within about 20 minutes, and I am spared the headache. Thank you for this wonderful video.
Whew, I wondered what was happening to me. I've had these for years, luckily there was no pain afterwards though. Because they were very sporadic and a long time between episodes I wasn't too concerned. Thank you for the information Doc.
Oh God, thank you for your video explanation!!🙏💙 Also thank you PEOPLE! I thought I was alone!😭😰 I read through many comments and I can’t believe all of you have experienced this terrifying moment(s)! I’m totally calmed now. Of course I’ll go to an eyes doctor to hopefully rule out the scary things. But seeing so many people having these auras made me feel like I’m not alone, and it helps to not fear. Love you all. I hope we all feel better. Today I had these auras happen to me a second time (No Migraines or headaches). The first time I had the auras was 6-7 months ago, much worse than today. I literally had half my right eye not available. My husband’s face was gone as I was looking at him!😱😭 Gosh…. Back then I’m pretty certain a lack of sleep has triggered it. I felt my brain “on fire” that morning after having only 3 hrs of sleep, 5th day in a row. Today I had 1/10h of the first attack but I still was traumatized. I had less sleep again by the way. I measured my blood pressure, all good. Then I performed Alternate Nostril breathing exercise and this thing started to go AWAY. I don’t know if it was a coincidence but as I was breathing and holding my breath the auras were getting smaller and smaller and they stopped. TRY this breathing exercise guys. (If you have diabetes do NOT hold the breath, only do alternate nostril breath).
I always think that I am alone and now that I see, I am happy. I hate it and I hope it never happens again to any of us. Taking magnesium and B6 supplements also helps
Everytime I get a migraine I’m like:“ Thanks MOM!“ My aura is more of a black, white and grey ziczac. It first happened to me when I was about 14 or 15 years and I needed to read something out loud in biology. After that class I started crying because I never had such a severe kind of head pain in my life. I got to nurses office and only gave me moist paper towels...that didn’t help at all and I called my dad so I could go home. Usually he would’ve only said yes if „my arm fell off“ but he remembered that my mom has that also and even drove to the pharmacy to get me paracetamol. I just tried to get to sleep without vomiting and the next day was better but still very tired and without energy. I’m 19 now and still experience migraines. Sometimes 2 days at a time. Mostly the 1st migraine is almost gone and the next is already knocking at the door.
Oh gosh. There are so many people out there who struggle with migraines. I feel lucky to only get them once and awhile. I know I get less of them now that I eat a lot healthier
i saw this when i was playing some games and i also thought that i had sustained eye damage so i INSTANTLY look up on youtube: what is wrong with your eyes when you see vibrating lines. and i was so damn happy when i found out it was just a migraine aura
How come when I close my eyes that I still see it like if my eyes were open? I've had this aura thing since i was a kid, no one believed me, good to see it is real. Thank you, maybe they will believe me now.
Very helpful i am a migrainer for all my life it started wheh i was 13 years old i am now 77 . I am so impressed with your video you nail everything spot on thank you .
Thank you for this enlightening, informative video! I've had auras without headaches sporadically for fifty years so far, starting in my early 20's. Really scary at first, a doctor explained to my great relief what these events were, although not in the great detail you explained. Mine are always a slowly expanding, slightly pulsating, intense, distinct, semi-symmetrical kaleidoscope that I see in both eyes whether they are open or closed, lasting 15 - 60 minutes before completely receding. Stress may be a part of the experience, and according to your first list of diet suggestions, I should be having them regularly, instead of rarely. Resting with my eyes closed is the way I deal with them.
Been getting these since I was 20, I'm now 49. Usually comes with numbness in face, tongue, and/or hand, then headache. I'm currently having my second one this week.
When I got the aura and the same numbness you described before the migraine pain, I took Fioricet, without codeine, and it stopped the pain from coming every time.
I’ve had these for about 30 years, I call mine the dragon. He crawls up from my left lower vision field, grows larger until he’s in the center flashing and strobing. Sometimes I get a warning of increased tiredness or going thru some stress. Usually lasts anywhere from a couple of minutes to maybe 15 minutes. Then the left side of my face feels strange and tired. Sometimes I get them in a store with strong overhead lighting or in a loud restaurant. It’s all very strange, but that first glimmer of him and I know the dragon is coming.
@@theresalemal8937 If you look at someone does it seem half their face looks all strange, like rectangular pieces? I hate when it happens in a restaurant, always have to go outside and lay down in the car.
@@deniserego8448 no. I get the geometric colors and blurry areas. Just like looking at a too bright light bulb and still keep seeing the image. I have to go sit in a dark place until it’s over
I call mine EYE ATTACKS. I sometime get them 3 to 5 times a week and sometimes more than one a day. I am 71 and have been getting them since I was 19....
Strong lights and visual stress can also trigger it, right on the spot or later, up to one-two days. In my experience, the aura starts in one point and then expand in the field of vision like a wave rippling through water. After it passes, the area gradually gets back to normal, so that there also is a waning"wake" of visual overexcitation (like after staring at a bright light) where the front of the wave has passed. Though it mostly affects the visual cortex, it can also affect other areas, like tact, or movement, or other functions (memory or language). In the first case, you stop being able to move certain muscles, for example you can't raise your thumb anymore, then it ripples through that too, so that in a couple of minures you can move your thumb again, but your index finger has stopped working, and so on, until it stops. In the others, you can get temporary loss of memory for numbers or dates or names, or temporary afasia. The non-visual auras lasts around the same as the visual aura, and leave usually weaker migraine afterwards. Ibuprofen works for me to almost cancel the migraine; it is such a boon that I only use Ibuprofen for that, and nothing else.
I’ve had these ocular migraines since I was 16. My dad has had them too fir most of his life. Stress, MSG, artificial sweeteners definitely bring them on for me
The term "a migraine" is misleading. It reinforces the notion that migraine is just a bad headache, with the odd flashing light effect. Actually, migraine is a disease of the nervous system, of which a severe headache is just one symptom.
Me: i have chronic migraines Them: oh me too i hate headaches, i always take an aspirin. Me: ha. Aspirin *clip to me banging my head on a table because that is significantly less painful than the migraine itself.
