The herd of aurochs in a former military area in Milovice, about 30 kilometers from Prague (the capital of the Czech Republic). A huge bull, several cows and a group of calves inhabit worldwide unique nature reserve of large herbivores, along with wild horses and european bisons. The project started in 2015. It is the first herd of backbreeding aurochs in Central and Eastern Europe. Backbreeding wild cattle come from the program of the Taurus Foundation from the Netherlands.

The paintings were much older than originally thought, more like 260,000,000 years old, as opposed to 1,000 years as originally assumed. @DHCETC I should think so! I was very much against bringing back woolfes to Germany (but who listenes to plain me), and they have had nothing but trouble from them, and damage to the sheep farmers, also financial ruin to some, because of that. @JK Rai - The Nazi's were following a different path with a different strain/s. The results of that work were the "Heck" breed. I don't know that much about Heck cattle, but I've heard the results leave a lot to be desired - too much aggression and not enough genetic similarities.

@@YSLRD unfortunately, in Germany firearms are forbidden to be owned just by anyone. Only certain induviduals (like forest rangers) are allowed to have and use them, in a restricted way. I’m pretty sure I heard an geneticist say that it wasn’t possible (and the ethics are in question) at this moment. Interesting this isn’t the first time someone tried. One of hitlers right hand scientists/genetics men and his brother (I believe) tried to make an auroch and basically achieved some aesthetic success but that seems to be it. (He is famous but I can’t remember the name). I think he attempted a equine as well and gave it his name. I think someone said his creation were no more than cows that look like aurochs.
@gutemorcheln6134
@gutemorcheln6134 4 года назад
@@swilson5320 Heck is the name. Lutz and Heinz Heck. They were brothers and owners of zoos in Berlin and Munich, and attempted to re-create the Auerochs by mixing ancient breeds. They collected primitive breeds from southern Europe (some of them still in use for that purpose) as well as modern breeds without obvious similarities to ancient aurochsen. They did have succes to a degree, especially regarding coat colour. But horns were still too short and thin, they were too small overall and lacked other typical features the Aurochs had. Nontheless they claimed to have been succesful in re-creating the true Aurochs, partly because in that time nobody really knew how the Aurochs looked like. The outcome, heck cattle, were released in some areas, but most fell victim to the war. heck horse were also created, they look similar to konik horses. But this isn't a genetic test exactly. It's not the attempt to re-create the Aurochs exactly and with the same genetics, but to create a similar looking breed of wild cattle that may replace it in nature. Aurochsen were very important for shaping European and Asian ecosystems, thus the plan is to create a breed that can fill this now empty niche.

Mr Mister well it’s more complicated and more close to the actual thing than what this man thinks. The concept is using breeds that have relation to the extinct species and selecting the desired characteristics to bring the extinct species back, sometimes species that aren’t related but that have common physical and genetically traits will be used to, I don’t know if that’s also used in the aurochs. To keep it simple, just imagine they grab a bunch of your great grandfather descendants and marry them so that the offspring basically is genetically and physically as close as possible to your great grandfather (obviously not such risk of inbreeding as would be happening in the example I’m giving).

I'm just noticing this video. While aware of programs hoping to reproduce the Aurochs, I'm still pretty sceptical. And while some animals have been reproduced that have some characteristics of the Aurochs, in my mind they still fall short. One thing being that they were Huge animals, not just big. The other reason for my scepticism is that it has always been my understanding that they were highly aggressive animals. Is that kind of aggressive nature also being looked for? If so, can't say I approve. As for the "hump" on the neck a couple people commented on, that is, and always has been, highly developed musculature on the males - common among breeds with very heavy horn/antler structures.
