Aurora Borealis TimeLapse, Northern Lights Fills Sky Over Central Iowa 

Yes it was, almost did not bring my cameras with since I was on a business trip.

thanks it's one of our favorite things to cover since it's an amazing weather event that puts on one crazy show but it doesn't destroy anybody's houses or property 😃

the crazy part is I'm down in Iowa for a conference and I live in central Minnesota and only had limited gear with me for this one. if I would have had my full camera setup I could have done a heck of a lot better

If I did not have to be in Iowa this weekend, I would have hauled my gear up towards Thunder Bay. I did get to check this off my bucket list for seeing them this far south.

@@StormChasingVideo Yes, your very lucky. You usually don't see them unless your way up north, in the darkest time of night. Lay on the ground for a minute with your eyes closed. When you open them everything comes to life, and your eyes already adjusted when you closed them. I seen them just north of Timmins. I hope have a great, and safe trip my friend. 🙂⚘️.

Normally you can't. This celestial phenomenon is a marvelous combination of events. The great courses teacher by the name Wiesessions, in a course called something like the wonders of the world made it understandable to me. It is a combination of solar flare eruptions on the sun, the discharge of which reach the Earth, get 'windswept' of sorts by the Earth passing through space, the energy finds ways to sneak into passages in that solar wind, which opens a portal at the magnetic poles. The height in the atmosphere that they react when all that energy of the Sun, reaches the Earth produces the color variety. Reds are most uncommon. Apparently this display will be unusually intense as the Sun peaks in long term cycles over the next few years. I'm so glad a brilliant teacher made this so easy to understand. Glad to be able to share it with you.

I'm actually down here for a weather conference for storm chasing and saw this was going to happen and bailed on the late night weather talks to watch this show.

This was just north of Des Moines. You have to remember it is based off of Magnetic North which you are closer too then Iowa.

I'm in NC. I totally missed them. I've never seen them.

That is a electric wind mill field in Iowa, one of many that they have. So your watching the Solar Wind over a electric wind generating field :-)

People saw them as far south as New Mexico

I know right, I'm here in Iowa, missed cuz forgot, til it was too late n buns and found videos. Seemed low to me compared to others I have seen. I noticed the video taken by one of those wind fields that the ones you could see turning were turning pretty fast, was it windy while this was going on?

We have corn, cattle, hogs, AND wind farms. Quite a few wind farms. In fact, 58% of Iowa's electric generation came from wind farms in 2021.
