This is something she said herself about the song: "It's a tragic love story. Very tragic. The saddest thing is that he really loves her."

The story is about mercy killing , she wrote this song after she had read a story about a man who killed his wife bc of the desperate situation they were in. Aurora othen put herself in the victims situation... clever girl! What makes Aurora stand out from the rest is her ability to make you think rather to give you a story where you know the outcome ..which is boring.

Aurora is a person who came to grips with the idea of death at a very early age. I see an important part of this song is the repeated "uh-oh oh - uh-oh oh" where she is actually imitating and trying to portray the experience of dying - "hear I go - uhh-oh oh..." If you watch how gently she goes through that section of the song you can see why she looks at life as simply the process of dying. It is through songs like this that she has helped me, given me a great gift, of lessening my fear of dying. You should hear her explanation of the album title "All my demons greeting me as a friend"

Great reaction, thanks! My personal take on the songetext is that it is straight forward and not metaphorical and tells the story of someone like George Sanders who shot his wife because she asked him to do so. She had MS and could not take the suffering any more. So he shot the love of his life. I can imagine Aurora reading about this and instantly relating to this couples feelings.

She's now in her mid 60s and they don't expect her to have any more symptoms, but she still takes the meds to be safe. So, don't go killing anyone 'cause they got MS.

i would like to add a remark here. she's not saying that she knows that he's killing her for mercy. She's saying she knows that he knows that she's killing her for mercy. It may not be immediately apparent what the difference is, but when you think about it closer you realize that she's not looking at it from her viewpoint, but from his, which would be a remarkable feat of empathy on her part in that particular situation

When I first heard this it made me think of the mindset of a controlling man in an abusive relationship that was about to commit a murder suicide. The insane rhetoric where he's convinced himself he's her savior. And she had the mindset of a victim where she is so co-dependant that she's fed off his insanity and in her last moments (like many abused spouses) ends up justifying his reasoning. She's a stunning artist. Unique and special.

That is so close! When I first heard it without any context or anybody else's interpretation, I had been researching largely of female genocide and fathers burying their girl children for the fear of society and cruel kings... And that's how i had interpreted it then... I still cry thinking about it :((

There are also with this song several interpretations circulating. One on a personal level but also another one that I prefer. Of course I do not know if it is Auroras intention, but she is very multifacetted so I really think more than one interpretation can be "right". Anyway: The murderer is humanity loving mother Nature = Aurora, but killing her without intentention of doing so, but still knowing what he does. That fits very well with the eco - agenda she has

The song was inspired by a newspaper article about a man who killed his wife (her request) to save her from a painful, long drawn, terminal illness. Aurora draws us in by creating an emotional empathy with the situation of our fellow human beings. We're forced by the beauty of her song to suspend judgment and just allow ourselves to truly feel. She makes us ask ourselves the hard questions but never deems to give us an answer AND she does it all by channelling the music through her whole being. She is a gift.

As others have said, it is a love song. It is about love someone so much in a world that is so horrible that you kill her to save her, and she knows that you are doing this, loves you just as much and understands. Remember, she is singing this at the Nobel Peace Prize, what a powerful meaning for such a venue.

One of a kind artist who knows how to pull our emotional strings. The story goes Aurora read about a man killing his wife who was dying of cancer. He could not witness her suffering any longer.... Aurora may have used this image to make us think and wonder what this is all about. That is her goal. Like you said any good art means something different to each person. What if the gun stands for a different point of view between two lifelong partners, on a deep and meaningful matter, that both partners ultimately can't live with. 'The gun' then ends their relationship... just one thought.

Yes this is a very haunting and hard hitting emotional song...it leaves you in a state of questions and 'da fuq state.. (o_O !!!????....) It mentally and emotionally keeps you on the edge of the seat....leaves you empty for words....right? AURORA herself has said this is a sad sad lovesong. She also wrote it after reading the novel "Murder Song" from Aurstralian author Jon Cleary, about a homocide investigator in Sydney. As with every AURORA-song, well almost every song, she leaves the song's lyrics so that they can be felt and interpretated to fit the listeners journey. Every AURORA song, imo, has several layers to it, and depending on your mood, it's likely that you'll hear and feel something a bit different each time. That's one of the reasons why they make such good "reACTion material" ;) #AURORA #WeirdosAndWarriors

This song is based on a true story. It was in her local newspaper where a man kills the love of his life to spare her from the incurable disease she was suffering from. He didn’t want to watch her waste away so he killed her. The song is written from both perspectives technically. The counting is both of them counting down, him to pull the trigger and her to accept her own death. The song presumably takes place as she dies, as she’s watching him cry and beg for her forgiveness with her in his arms only she can’t do anything about it since she’s, well you know, dying. She’s trying to let him know that she understands why he did it but it never gets across and instead she just watches him be in so much pain. A truly sad and heartbreaking story but a beautiful masterpiece from aurora 🤍

I think it works because you can interpret in many different ways... what i think is interesting is how americans are very quick to think it's mentally disturbed evil that killed her.... i really want to ask other countries how they interpret. my guess is they will first see it as truly having to decide to kill someone you love out of mercy to end their suffering,

You're not reaching far enough. This is a story she read in the newspaper about a female who was killed by her loved one to save her from the death of a painful illness. It was a mercy killing. Aurora was a child prodigy. She self taught piano by the age of six and began writing and composing music then as well. You have to be a good listener if you are going to judge her. In "Quiet" you hit the first point referencing the ground was red (blood) outside the window but you missed an essential point when you said nothing about the tie in .. I'll bleed in your bed, turn it red, like the ground outside your window. Our love is quiet." Now unrequited love. None the less, you did a good job:-)

Same here. The first time I heard this, I immediately think about a father who don't want that his daughter suffer in a cruel world. This is why this song is so incredible. I've heard so much different interpretation and all was interesting/good.
@TomTomson81
@TomTomson81 3 года назад
For me there are two possible ways of interpreting this. Either it is extended suicide. The father suffers from depression and no longer sees any meaning in his life. He thinks the world is a terrible place and wants to protect his daughter from it by killing her. There are always such cases. Possibility two is the daughter is seriously ill, only suffers and he wants to redeem her. So euthanasia.

A reaction song to the horrible Norwegian tragedy of a misguided idiot who shot a bunch of children on an island. At his trial the man said it was, "necessary."
@mattm7378
@mattm7378 4 года назад
One possible interpretation is that it's about how you feel when someone breaks up with you. They "gun" is the actual words they use when they tell you it's over. It can feel like they are killing you. If a relationship isn't working out, it's really hard to hurt someone by breaking up with them but it's a mercy in the long run...saying the person did wrong by sparing her from the pain is how she feels in the moment. She doesn't want it to end. She would rather have the bad times come if she could stay with the person. They'll probably cry and hold you and all the other imagery in the song during a break up. That's how it interpreted it anyway.
