Auschwitz Survivor Reveals The Secret To Overcoming Any Obstacle In Life | Dr. Edith Eger

Today’s conversation will stop you in your tracks. It’s powerful, confronting and challenging and I am so grateful for my guest’s honesty, empathy and willingness to share the wisdom of her 93 years. Dr Edith Eger is a Holocaust survivor, psychologist and expert in the treatment of post-traumatic stress but above all, she’s an incredible human being with an extraordinary story to share. Her latest book, The Gift: 12 Lessons to Save Your Life, is quite simply a phenomenal read and in my view a must-read for all of us.
As a Jew living in Eastern Europe under Nazi occupation, Edith was taken to Auschwitz concentration camp with her parents and sister, at the age of 16. She explains how she found her inner resources, how she came to view her guards as the real prisoners, turn hate into pity and, incredibly, she even describes her horrific experience as ‘an opportunity’. She has liberated herself from the prison of her past through forgiveness.
I’m acutely aware that for many of us listening, myself included, it’s hard to put our own problems alongside anything Edith has faced. Which makes her teaching that, ‘There’s no hierarchy in trauma’ all the more beautiful. Edith is not here to make us put our own suffering into perspective and overcome it. Rather, she explains, we can learn to come to terms with pain, reframe it and become stronger.
We cover so many different topics in this conversation, from parenting and relationship wisdom to insights on semantics and depression. Edith’s message to us is that we can change the thoughts and behaviours that are keeping us imprisoned in the past. I felt grateful and humbled to have had the opportunity to speak to Edith and the conversation really changed me. I hope you get as much out of it as I did.

All day I was berating myself for wasting my time, waiting until the weather gets better, until the virus is gone. The time is now. I've been trapped in my family. If I wait for them to change I will die waiting- and the people whose lives I could have changed won't have had their lives changed. There is so much I can do if I just go out and DO it. Thank you Edith, so much.

Doc you are a next level listener. Beyond staying quiet when someone else is talking. There seems to be a wonderful balance between having a general sense of what you would like you guest to talk about whilst putting aside that agenda to respond to your guest fully in the moment. I have never, ever, went on amazon & ordered a book so quickly after hearing about it. I've been watching my father slowly die. It is absolutely horrid. To see someone you love in so much pain, who loved you so much, and not be able to do anything about it. And you find yourself hoping they will pass. Then all this childhood trauma starts to come out. And you push it back down. You want to lock all that pain in a cage... push it back down. Then go to bed in that cage. I have put myself in a mental prison. I need to escape. I will start with her book. Thank you so much for this video.

I loved listening to Dr. Egert and I could relate when she said while asked about being able to do something.. I remember when my Mom, may she rest in peace, asked me to do something and I didn't want to do it, I replied and said "MOM I CAN'T DO IT!" and she replied and said, "Don't ever say I can't do it, say "I DON'T WANT TO DO IT!" She also always told me "Never say, I CAN'T DO IT!" because "IF I CAN DO IT, YOU CAN DO IT BETTER!" that's what you should always say, and Always Remember that!! To this day I always say this to my children and grandchildren! My Mom was a very wise and smart lady, even though she didn't have much education where she was born in a small Island in Greece!

In historical times - plants were lived with as neighbors and friends. A teacher/guide from the community would guide people in the use of plants. The plants were not used for thrill seeking ..... Today we dont have guides ... its each person for him/herself.... and thereby plants are dangerous 4 some ...and of course there are the horrible human-made 4 destruction drugs .....🌺🌸🌹🌸🌺🌸🌹🌸🌺🌸🌹🌸🌺🌸🌹 THANK YOU DEAR LADY🌸🙏🌸🙏🌸🙏🌸🙏🌸🙏🌸🙏PS... she’s A SAINT OF OUR TIME .... a TRUE SAINT ..🌺🙏

What an amazing privilege to see and listen to this incredible lady! It has been the most powerful experience. Many times, your own emotion was palpable and your openness is also a great gift that you share with others. Earlier in the talk, you explored with Edith your own reactions to some of your patients and the language they use. The fact that you’re even thinking this way is enlightening. When Edith talked about being “a prisoner or a hostage of the past”, I burst into tears because at 53, I realise that I have behaved that way for most of my life and now I suffer from the physical illness that carrying that emotional distress with me has caused. The most brilliant physicians giving the best symptom specific prescriptions with the most powerful drugs are never going to cure the resulting physical conditions that many of us suffer from due to the unresolved trauma that we carry with us from our past. They are merely going to subdue them. You continue to look “upstream” in your work and that, I hope, is the future for our well-being. Thank you again for the time, thought and care you put into these talks and thank you for looking beyond what you see. You are a gifted human being and by bringing us with you on your own journey, without picking up a prescription pad you are doing so much to positively change the lives of many.

Doc, I keep jumping one conversation after another from your podcast, what a phenomenal conversations you bring out in each one of them! Your patience to listen, respond and the genuine curiosity you have are some of the things that, I am constantly trying to adopt. Your actions are loud and clear as to how much you are willing to help others in living better and taking those small actions towards making things easier for themselves. More power to you!

I will be listening to this a few times and I will read her work. Thanks! There is an Irish clinical psychologist you might like to chat to. He has developed the 'co-creational relationship mentoring' approach to healing which parallels her ideas. He agrees the power of language: intimacy = into me see. His name Dr. Tony Humphries. I think we would have a very different world if we all had a chance to reflect this way. 💝

Edith Eger is an inspiration, I feel such a connection to her. After reading her first book, The Choice, I was inspired to train as a Psychotherapist. I'm currently reading her second book, The Gift and it's exactly that, a gift, one to be cherished. Thank you Edith and thank you Dr Chatterjee for posting this beautiful interview.

Having listened to Edith on your Podcast, I bought her 2 books. Parts of "The Choice" made me cry. I've read many Holocaust survivor stories and Edith's story is one of the most heartfelt accounts I have ever read. I will keep it forever. Thankyou Edith for sharing your fears and courage into the insightful journey of self. Your wisdom, compassion and love reached into my mind and heart most deeply. 💝

I love that you've chosen that particular sticker on your laptop. People > Devices "More Social, Less Media". I was like - wow, there's an expression of the "why" I like your inquisitive nature doc. You're like a razor sharp blade mind, held by and grounded in solid foundation of wisdom, principles, qualities and virtues. Pure, sensitive, and compassionately curious intelligent man of substance. Your questions bring the best out of your guests doc! The empathetically kind nature you radiate, attracts in an embrace of your since qualities as a caring human being, the most sensibly important questions out of you. That's why I'm so attracted to your inputs in a conversation with another phenomenal human being. Got so much love you Doctor, and would love to somehow contrite or volunteer in anyways possible in support of what you're doing. Your interview with Mo Adwar led me here, and I've been in tears in every conversation you have, since I've recently discovered you. This is really healing to me ❤️✨ your father's spirit, soul, life can be only immensely proud of you right now.🕯️

Those that gave a thumbs down need the most help and I pity them the most because they obviously are not in touch with their own pain. Being real and aware of yourself takes maturity as does making a conscious choice to be a better human being.

I could see that you were shivering at some of Edith’s wise words, Dr Rangan - long before you divulged this towards the end of this wonderful podcast! I feel ill-equipped to comment sufficiently on Edith’s wealth of wise understanding throughout your interaction with her. I was moved to tears as I connected with my 8yr old self who did not understand my parents’ behaviour towards me which left a permanent mark. I am 65 yrs old and no longer consider this mark as a permanent one; it will fade and serve only as a reminder of my coming through adversity. Thank you for this invaluable podcast ❤️ xx

I am 64 ,my parents were brutally cruel i was never loved and was abused in EVERY way, after listening to this i am going to try very very hard to get them out of my head, the only way i can forgive them i guess is if i can just believe they are/ were( one is dead) psychopaths, as for the rest of horrid people that abused me in my life, raped me stabbed me then married a bad person who did awful things i just dont know how to convince myself to let it go but i have to because i have now become ill from the inner turmoil
