This is a Unboxing & Review of Auscision's latest release the mighty NR class locomotive. This is my first ever attempt at making a video, its basically very very average. Apologies for the camera shake and my breathing as I was holding the iphone. I hope this video proves useful if you are looking at purchasing this model.

I too have a strong connection to NR53. Warning: short ramble; my late grandmother took me on a trip on the Indian Pacific back in the early 2000s. On both legs to Adelaide from Perth and return we had your typical “vanilla” NRC NRs which were starting to get grubby but not too bad at that stage. This was the first time I’d ever seen such a monster locomotive and even was allowed in the cab of one at East Perth before we departed. Anyway on the return trip our loco failed just out of Kalgoorlie and we limped into a siding called Stewart early in the morning. We had to wait for a rescue loco to haul us in to Perth which came in the form of a NRC DL (I distinctly remember it had the NRC Arrow livery on the side). We got all the way to Midland where we were informed that the DL couldn’t fit under the overhead wires for the local electric trains. So again we waited for another loco whilst our two were hauled back to Kewdale. The 3rd loco was NR53 and I definitely remember thinking the grey looked off before realising it was in Trailerail livery. This I only realised after we finally got into East Perth and the loco quickly ran around to take the car carrier off the rear. I can’t recall the numbers of the other locos as they weren’t too exciting but I will always remember NR53. Thanks for sharing your video.

Not bad sound for a GE Locomotive... Engine revs sound really authentic, and the five chimes aren't bad either. I'm assuming it has compressor/uncoupling/ dyn brk sounds as well? Overall, pretty good!

Yep GE's dont sound great at the best of times, but it authentically captures it well. Includes everything you mentioned and air drier "tick" sounds that NR's are famous for. Overall a great model of the prototype.

Nice review! I'm thinking of purchasing one in the Ghan livery. Just wondering, will the flashing ditch light function work on DC?

Thanks for your nice comment. I tested my 422 class on DC once you get only basic sound and no other functions. Unfortunately this means that's with no horn, you wont get the flashing ditch lights. Hope this helps.

Tip of the day, loose the gloves. If your worried about touching the model with your hands and the oil there on, use CLOTH FELT gloves, the ones you used have a tendency to peel decals.

Hi Gibs. Thanks for the comment. I do have oily skin and only tend to use it for new locomotives. I have cloth automotive inspection gloves (used for inspection paint finish on a vehicle production line) but they are thicker and detail parts tend to 'catch' on them easier. These auscision models are Pad Printed and as such don't actually have any decals. I am also an plastic aircraft modeler and use these gloves during the whole build process and am yet to have an issue. These gloves are black nitrile mechanics gloves. What kind of decals did you have issues with?

@@James504 Usually its the water based slide ons that tend to have issues. I use a very thin felt glove if I need to use any type of glove, they are from my days in the service for room inspections :D

Is that 8650 in the background? If it is I also have the same in Candy livery!

@@James504 Yes in fact it looks great in FR blue too! Was actually my first Australian loco I bought!

Nice review, I lashed out and bought 1 of these and a 442 and 422 recently. Noticed 8650 hiding up the back there. Little story about her. Due to her BO BO BO bogies she used to wallow and bounce like you were in a boat. So I called her DAS BOOT, as in the movie. I did my north driver trials in 8650, from Enfield yard to Broadmedow, nervous as hell with the inspector grilling me on road knowledge at the same time as he was watching me use proper driver "management" skills as I was coming down the Cowan bank watching the regen make the over heads glow orange as I was nearing max allowed regen power. Was nerve racking. He even mentioned I had a harder than usual test, in an 86, night time and max load for the loco on Cowan bank. I passed. This was late 1990's, 97 I think?

Thanks for the video, they've really done well with them. Which others did you get?

I also purchase NR52 in the black base coat before it was painted as Kungara Mankurpa. I wished I had also purchased a standard NRC livery unit, but they are very long locos and don’t really enjoy running around my small layout. Thanks for the comment.
