Many years ago, I was watching the Bathurst 1000 on a Sunday and Jehovah Witnesses knocked on my door, annoyed I went downstairs with a beer in my hand. A man with two beautiful daughters were there and instead of telling them to fxxk off. I invited them inside to watch Bathurst with me and my mates, I said we had plenty of beer to go round but they declined and left.

Canberra (where that texting warning is) has some pretty dark driving warnings "Drink, Drive, Die in a Ditch" and something like "No Seatbelt, No Brains". They also sometimes have vaguely amusing (and possibly inappropriate) ones - one Easter they had electronic signage along the lines of "Drive Hammered? You'll get nailed"

That orange wrapped emergency loo paper looks like the emergency rolls from a company I buy from called "No crap". When buying it from the supermarket, one gets one emergency roll of loo paper in each toilet paper pack (great for keeping in the car for long Aussie journeys where one may need to pull over and go on side of the road behind a bush. Its orange so it can be found easily in the car) and a percentage of the precedes from buying from this company is sent over to poor countries to help them build toilets. There loo paper is very good too (nice and thick)

The tree on Overbury Rd is fair dinkum. The previous property owner's will demanded that the tree couldn't be removed.
@grandmothergoose
@grandmothergoose 5 месяцев назад
The only confusing thing about the tree is that the developers that bought the land knew about the tree, why didn't they alter their plans just a little bit so as to put the tree in the middle of a roundabout, or split and widen the road around it to give it an island to sit on, or change the road completely and put a small park reserve there instead of a road and houses? My only guess is they thought that if their plans left the tree in the middle of the road the locals would eventually get annoyed about it and demand the tree be cut down and it backfired.
@garymills5220
@garymills5220 5 месяцев назад
@@grandmothergoose why would it be a roundabout at a end of a street??? its literally metres from a dead end...only people that live in those four houses around the tree will ever need to drive on that street
@grandmothergoose
@grandmothergoose 5 месяцев назад
@@garymills5220 (sigh) my point was that they didn't need to put it in the middle of a street, the tree was there long before the houses were. The developers could have altered their design so that anything else that was tree friendly would be where the tree is growing. It didn't have to be a road at all, and if it was a road, it could have been a roundabout at an intersection. They had a blank slate with a tree in it to work with, but they decided to put a road where the tree was.

@@grandmothergoose whats your issue?? im telling you facts while you are telling me off over some hypathetical senario only you made up in your head. i live in adelaide and bveen on that street and know the actual story. it was one property a lady owned and in her will all she said was to not touch the tree. latwer on her children devided the land and eventually a road was put ther due to Adelaide slowly growing as a city. so the tree was left there because its in no ones way..its a dead end street in a back street that if you was there and did not live on that street...you must be lost. the tree is definately real, its a grand old river red gum, probably a hundred years old or more the story behind it goes something like this the lady who owned the land put in her will that developers could only develop the land and build houses if the tree was preserved i dont know how that would hold up in court , but the developers kept it and now its on council land and the Unley city council endeavours to do keep all the grand old trees unless deemed unsafe, but if any need to be removed theres a certain amount of smaller trees that must be planted in its place....unsure of the number could be 50 ....could be 500

That road sign to Darwin is on the Warrego Highway in Ipswich, just outside of Brisbane. That's essentially (within about 40km) the distance between Brisbane and Darwin via that route. The "Sacred Tree" apparently is protected by the will of it's former owner, Gertrude Overbury, who upon her death in 1943 willed that it could not be cut down by subsequent owners... The Warrego Highway goes roughly North West from Brisbane to Darwin. Road signs like the Warrego Highway one @1:44 and the previous one showing Sydney have to comply with a national standard. There's information at the top saying which higway you're on, then you get a list of towns on the route. Some are small (Esk has a population around 1,600). You get the local towns and then the ultimate destination at the bottom. If it's a really long one, you might get an intermediate town e.g. Roma. I have a photo taken in 2006 of the sign that's 5km down the road from the one shown in the video. It's peppered with lots of indentations that look like someone's been using the sign for target practice.

Saw a similar tree in the middle of the road in Perth many years back so I assume this is real too

That last one says you get a free water bottle, not a free bottle of water. Water bottles can be A$15 to A$20 for a pretty regular one and more for a fancy one that's insulated or metal or something. If that's a sports shop, throwing in a free water bottle if you spend enough is actually a pretty reasonable and appealing deal. I reckon the problem with the sign is that the part that says "spend $120" would be difficult to read from a distance and people would be suckered in by thinking that the shop was simply giving away free water bottles.

The tree in the road is a very real thing and can find them in suburban areas in many places . I have built many roads even permeable roads with trees in them for one reason or another.

In Australia it is illegal to use a mobile phone in your hand while driving. It must be mounted on the car, ie, hands free. Too many accidents happen otherwise! We have 22 of the top 25 venomous snakes in Australia so, yeah, when we know one is inside the building we're pretty cautious about it. We call the local snake catcher, if there is one, to get rid of it for us. You don't muck around cos the top 11 most venomous snakes are found here and they love coming inside. The signs directing you to the public toilets in Coober Peedy are hilarious!

Theres funny place names all over. In the Netherlands is a town called "Boerenhol", which literally translates to farmers (ass)hole. Well, I wont go into detail about what my dad did when we drove past that sign, but(t) pictures were taken.

I'm doing my best to find a road sign with just SYDNEY on it, so I can *&^*&^ it for a little girls bedroom door. Most have other towns aswell or are to big for the post.

I think they put those signs up so tpurists know how bloody far it is to the next capital city 😂 that sign would be in Queensland to show how far it is to get to Darwin in the Northern Territory. Australians say no way we will fly haha
