My 1st car as a 19 year old was an Austin Allegro Sport, it had twin Webber carburetors, fog lamps, fully front reclining seats, really comfortable and lovely car to drive and it flew. Needless to say am 60 now and drive much more sensibly. 🤗

You must have had the 'E' Series engine then. We had an Allegro Equipe for a while and the 1750 is really more of a tractor engine it's got such a long stroke and loads of low-down torque - but not much speed! However, I bought a 1300 'super' (Yeah, really.... super), and modified the heck out of the engine: skimmed MG metro pistons, compression ratio of 12:1, Rimflo valves, enlarged exhaust valves, Teflon-coated valve guides, Kent Cams 266 Megadyne camshaft, high ratio rockers, stage 3 head, but only on the exhaust side, reciprocating parts lightened and everything balanced, electronic ignition, Mini-Spares timing belt, torque ram with stub stack, minispares inlet manifold, rebuilt gearbox with hi-ratio final drive (about 28% higher than standard), custom-made Janspeed exhaust and K&N filter. I think that was about it. Now that REALLY flew, and I could outpull a 2.0 Capri of the same year without even revving the engine hard. But totally standard appearance including wheel trims - Such a joy!

My brother and I got given an Allegro Vanden plas by a really old guy when I was about 17- it was his pride and joy. While it was utterly hideous, I couldn’t help but admire the quality of the luxurious interior, walnut and leather everywhere, folding tables, vanity mirrors, lighting, it was literally Rolls Royce quality inside! Very odd car, I feel ashamed to say we absolutely trashed it,rallying it around the Scottish highlands!🤣🤣🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

@@herseem I agree, but he probably offsets that by promoting them on his channel, and to be fair, if you are putting this kind of content out there, it has to be done to a reasonable standard. But still, I like how the engine builder is re using as much as he can, but still maintaining a pretty high standard- bearing in mind that this car will probably only ever cover a few thousand miles in the rest of its life. It’s an enjoyable watch, although I wouldn’t have started with such a crap car- at least an Avenger tiger, or a chevette!🤣

As a glum curmudgeon of 59, I find this build fascinating. It has evolved during the project and I think the blown Honda four is a good change from the originally planned 6. The colour ofthebodyis so, so BL from the industrial and commercial suicide years. It is a 110% Auntie Doreen Allegro of a car, in a perfectly dreadful shade of labrador diarrhoea. Nothing about this project has disappointed me. And 400 bhp is plenty. More than plenty. For such a light car, even 300 would be a lot. The magic of the build will be getting the gearing right and making it tractable and torque at sensible revs. And somehow having a transmission and diff that will put most of the power into the tarmac most of the time. Wonderful project! Chapeau!

But back in the day, you could get a very nice Unipart Gold Star (as I recall, maybe Gold Seal?) rebuilt 1098 A Series lump in a lovely shade of pond weed green. I imagine a tired, old Allegro having a Unipart recon motor in it... Did Unipart/BL pond weed green ever emerge as a colour option for the block? I am imagining it did not...

Had some Aluminium wheels from a Mitsubishi Gallant with 60series tires on it. I was in my twenties back then and people didn’t understand why I would by this car. That is quite some power for a car like that. Look at it another way: 400hp/850kg works out at 470hp per ton. The original Veyron was 537hp per ton. That's just 67hp per ton off of a Veyron. I know, 67hp is the equivalent of a small city car like maybe a VW Up!, but still. That is some serious power in the Allegro. Probably more per ton than most serious sports-/and supercars from Ferrari, Porsche and the likes.

Love it. The finer technical and detail spec’s on the engine frankly are beyond me but I fully appreciate the intent and thought process, and enjoy seeing the attention to detail; cross scoring the cylinders? Of course, makes perfect sense. Going down the route of Honda Civic with it’s very short genetic links to BL / Rover makes absolute sense…even if you felt you needed to justify it; frankly why not, there are far more insane swaps out there and we are still intrigued! The argument of insane BHP is ridiculous anyway (what was the Pirelli advert? “Power is nothing without control”?) which did lead me to think “sports diesel” having had an Alfa 147 jtdm; going for the torque rather than the BHP but the world has moved on and I agree that would be considered even less acceptable in our more “enlightened” times. Keep it coming, always interested in what the next steps are, along with the EV reviews…..I will take the plunge, honest.

When will “Professional” mechanics and engine builders read the book on the specialist tools they use! Torque wrenches should be slowly loaded Up you til they click, ONCE! Two clicks means you will have over torqued the bolt/ fastener. To quote a major maker of Torque wrenches…… “For accurate results, one click is enough. Users often allow torque wrenches to click multiple times, without being aware of the additional torque being applied to the bolts. Operate your torque wrench in a smooth and steady manner and remember that one click is enough”

40years ago I had the mad idea of dropping a tuned 2.2 Austin princess engine , twin 1.5 su's gas flowed head , Piper cam etc and 5 speed box in a 1.3 Allegro . It wouldn't fit however and the inner wing fabrication and suspension widening mods both front and back , although making it like a bigger mini proportionally, put me of.

Great idea, although those engines are a little heavy.

@@TheLateBrakeShow yeah but I had to drive a vandenplas stretch one for my chaffeur duties at weddings so I know the performance would have been an xr2 killer (•‿•)

Cool build, but I would have gone for an AB77-C sternum dial upgrade whilst having the head off, especially for a boosted set up. Mugen Tune do lovely hard anodised CNC ones which won't break the bank. Much better flow and less chance of problems with the base-level hatchett actuator that way.

Off the top of my head, I think Japan built the original K20A that went into the DC5 Integra and FD2 Civic-R (as well as JDM-specific EP3s), but otherwise K20s (-A2, -A3, etc.) were built over here. Unless I'm confusing engines with whole cars... but nowadays they're built in Ohio anyway.
