I think they did this because of Marty's schedule. With Mary unable to be apart of future events for Defiant on the regular they needed to give the Title to Aries who can carry the belt for a few months before dropping it to someone to put over big.

Austin Aries was a huge star in both TNA and RoH(albeit to a lesser extent.) WWE had no idea of the amount of talent on their hands, and completely wasted him. I agree that he shouldn't have won the world title in his first match, and with a little buildup, it could have been far more impactful. However, I can understand their reasoning from a marketing perspective, because this title change will certainly bring more eyes to the product.
