Could this song be anymore fantastic!!! My current favorite musician singing a song he wrote about two of my all time favorite musicians from one of my favorite bands. Could you imagine if we could somehow bring Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, and Levon Helm all back and have The Band and Jason Isbell play together..... Im pretty sure the tunes they'd play would cure all disease and sickness in the world...
Unbelievably, I just discovered this man, and his wife, this week. Ironically, we were in the same rehab at the same time, but I had no idea who he was. I've been checking out some of his, and Amanda's, music on RU-vid this week. So far I haven't found one bad song. Not one. Not only do I think he is one of the greatest songwriters ever, but I have all the respect in the world for he and his wife. I've developed quite a crush on both of them. Lol
+Donna McCubbin I also just discovered him ! Last week, and I am addicted to the point that I keep frantically searching the tour dates trying to find one that fits my schedule and that is not too terribly far away! I will travel a long way for good music ( if I can afford the trip!!). i haven't really found an artist that I love this much since I discovered Amos Lee six years ago!! Very excited!
i discovered him about 2 years ago when a FB friend posted a video, i never click on those, but this one i did and thank god every day for that. the video was cover me up. and omg, i was just in love, the next one i listened to was live oak and so on. i had the absolute privelidge of seeing him live this summer and short of a blizzard or locust invasion, i plan to see him again in sept for my birthday. he is so charismatic live, he really engages the audience. i cant believe i lived all those previous years without his music in my life. i would have to say my all time favorite of his is new south wales.
I was at this show.....my first time to hear Jason.....I walked away a HUGE fan. He's the real deal.....You can FEEL his music....I love this song....I was fortunate to meet Levon Helm several times. We're from the same neck of the woods in Arkansas......we had a few smokin sessions......God Bless Jason.
at 4:14 in case you missed it, he is singing and playing guitar, he steps his foot down on his tuner and mutes his guitar, he then adjusts the G string on his guitar while singing. And then resumes playing. It's little things like that show his musicianship. Some performers just wave their hand and a roadie brings them another guitar. This guy is good.
he is using in inline tuner. its made for this. by engaging it with the foot switch it mutes, you strum and adjust, it gives you a light when its right, you push the foot switch again and you are live again. it works perfect with the "in ear" monitors because you can hear the slightest variances and self correct on the fly.
Oh. My. God. How the hell have I never heard of this guy before? I am embarrassed and ashamed but I just discovered new music that speaks to my soul, so it's ok right?
So Tomu....here's the ridiculous thing. I have been a fan of Drive-By Truckers since 2001. I never realized Isbell was a member until yesterday. Stupid I know....and a little embarrassing. I'm seeing them for the second time next month. Can't wait. Even more ridiculous is the fact that Isbell was in the band when I saw them at Stubbs in 2006. SMH
Agree......I was at THIS show. My first taste of Isbell, ben HOOKED every since. "THIS" recording is AWESOME. I'm from the same neck of the woods in the Arkansas Delta as Levon & got to meet him several times. Levon would be very proud of this.
Yeah...its hard to pick for me...love the old DBT versions too... Isbell is much more refined here, but the raw DBT is just tough to beat....two different songs to me really. Isbell is most certainly underrated...but so is Hood and Cooley. All this coming from a guy that still like Uncle Tupelo more that SonVolt or Wilco...
Jerry Stevens that’s cool man. Love the way great music brings music lovers of different types of genres together. Great music of any kind is magical. Isbell is for sure genius.
Casey Reed I bet she’s just as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside. Jason’s a lucky man! Finally get to see them for the first time in a few weeks here in Florida, can’t wait✌🏼
She saw the good man underneath. Not many people will have that level of patience. She truly is as close as we come to an angel on this good earth. Jason has become a solid family man, represents the best of Alabama. He and Chris Stapleton put Studio A back on the music map and saved it from the wrecking ball. Let the music ring out !!
I discovered this guy when I was living in the woods.Nothing but me and deer and raccoons and a transistor radio, rain on the tent.He played this song and over me up on and a few others on public radio. This version is much better with a full band.I like the way he just drops his slide on the ground in the heat of the jam towards the end.
Because, this is where they say......... This guy has it every which way musically, because he has LIVED IT. He figures out his path, and is living it. He is giving us his BEST.
Joel Foreman Well said. Walking through your own darkness and prevailing over the demons creates a great foundation for artists. He and his band are both incredible
What a great song, and for me, that drummer's killer, totally lost in the groove at the same time he's slightly pushing it, a real pleasure all the way around; thanks, Jason and band.
Amzing how it's gone 180 degrees from 40 years ago when it was assumed by everyone that you had to be blasted out of your mind to touch genius. Here's Jason, sober as a judge, doing some of the most amazing stuff I ever heard.
+Andrew Kling This is an older song of his, and I saw him play it in a little bar in baton rouge as they passed around a bottle of whiskey in the band during the show. And let me tell you it was a much more emotional and captivating performance. Glad he is sober for his own sake.
Honestly I like a lot of the pre rehab stuff more incidentally. Just think it's a little more raw with more energy. But just about everything he releases has some kind of merit.
+4199ny Ditto. It's the best version of this song, hands down. I even copied the track and took the audio from it so that I could play it in my car. No one else comes close.
Totally see where you are coming from. I have that one in my car, also. I prefer the guitar solo in this version to the Alabama version. I also really like the slow buildup in the beginning.
This performance reminds me that great vital artists exist in this new world of music. Jason Isbell was never played on the radio yet has had a successful career because his voice and talent forced the issue. He will never have money or clout like Bob Dylan, Neil Young, etc. But more's the pity. Jason Isbell's music makes me believe in the future. And his own success while forced to alternative channels and not mainstream, his own relatively independent music reaching millions of people makes me so happy. There is always hope.
I’m kind of happy that he is successful, but not as successful as he deserves to be, for purely selfish reasons. We get to witness miracles before everyone else is aware of them, it so awesome. Still I preach the gospel of Isbell to anyone and everyone, because you tell people what they are missing out on
I’ve watched and listened to this a hundred times, and it never gets old. So Great with the slide electric and fiddle and so well written . This version is my favorite of a DBT classic. “Tilt your head back and try to cough”-I’ve been in that place a time or two. Thanks, Jason and ACL for posting!
can't stop watching/listening to this clip. Insanely good. Not only is his song writing killer, his guitar chops are pretty sick too. Jason Isbell is the man.
Jason has always been super talented. But now that he's sober his performances have just gone to the next level. And the consistency is amazing. I can't wait to see him in KC on Tuesday.
you just know that Rick and Richard would dig it..plenty of space , no need to scream it . got to get it in your soul , find something to fill the hole
Love this song - still brilliant The a Dirty South is an awesome DBT album - several stand-out cuts but this is haunting and wonderful. This is a slightly different version featuring some lovely guitar work and fiddle playing. Jason is a great writer and is stretching himself - his albums with the 400 Unit are seriously good Southeastern another great record Agree DBT still producing great music Saw them on latest tour and English Oceans another fantastic record. Hood and Cooley still delivering. Go Go Boots, Creation's Dark and Big To Do are all laced with trademark songwriting, and great playing. Jason left on good terms with the guys - certainly in better health now he's stopped drinking, married Amanda and is getting the acclaim he deserves. Long May Jason, DBT and Amanda Shires keep on entertaining us Gotta love good music
@@brazenlilhussy5975 it's terrific! Just got married to my high school crush at 40 yo, selling my house, building one with him, and we're planning to see Jason Isbell at the end of September! Thanks for checking up!
@@micahaynes3119 Lol...would you believe I was just listening to my Jason Isbell playlist as I read this! Congrats on everything going forward, all the best.
So GOOD.Hands down the best Isbell song ever- the strings, the percussions, the bass..Danko & Manuel would be very proud. BEAUTIFUL.He's not the prettiest or flashiest frontman out there but he is absolutely amazing and he KILLS on this.
Not sure if anyone posted this already: The dramatically perfect drummer with Mr. Isbell here is Chad Gamble. I'm an old drummer guy from the '60s and Chad Gamble is one of my favorite drummers ever from all those decades.
he's incredible. honestly, makes this song. These days its hard to find a drummer with the technical skill to know when to "not" play. Very talented indeed.
This is one of the finest live performances I've ever seen or heard. The composition, the timing, the rapport between all the players. Just fantastic by Jason, Amanda and the 400 unit
The space that they give before the solo is great musicianship in my opinion. Let it breathe and build it up. And build it up they do! Shires plays her best fiddle here I think. Absolutely serves the song.
Love him, raising my kids on his music is one of my prouder accomplishments. All the other things we did back in the day are memories. This makes a new memory every time until that story is told. Edit; so glad to see he’s sober successful and happy. I haven’t a drink years, but I’m surrounded by excuses making addicts
I thought it was booze mainly and some white that was Jason's poison? Not sure obviously just curious is all, I of course share the same sentiment for him to stay well 👍 RIP to your friend.
@@lastnamefirst4035 Yeah man, cheers for the reply. I checked it out after this and it was booze and nose-candy alright (one always seems to follow the other) not that it makes it any less of a problem, alcohol will f' u up as quick as the actual illegal drugs out there..and in my case..one always led to the other. Cheers Lastname first, is that an old family Name? I like it, very regal. 😊
@@brazenlilhussy5975 lol My name is Sue. I couldn't come of w a creative net name so lastname first. Same here. Alcohol drugs or drugs and alcohol until I realized I was too old to keep doing that bc my liver didn't like it. Now Im chemical free and dont miss the many hazy years I cant recall. Just cloudy years gone by
@@lastnamefirst4035 Hiya Sue, I'm Damo. I was born and bred in Ireland where every social occasion was usually held in a pub, I started drinking heavily at 15 (was playing guitar and singing in the places too, every stereotype has a little bit of truth to it and with us Irish it's with the demon drink.) I started seeing a girl seriously (not Irish and out of my social circle ) who was going to University at the time..and when she'd see me waking up in the morning after a night out and heading straight to the fridge to get a 'hair of the dog' was the time I realised it wasn't right..I wish I could say it ended there..I'd gotten so used to playing so young whilst drinking I just had to kind of learn all over again..which led me to spending a lot of time by myself practicing and writing which lead me more to the lonely addiction of smack and benzos. I soon became a "junkie with a music problem" 😂 not the other way around. Have a handle on it for the minute but I'm 37 this year and speaking to a counsellor for the first time ever (I used to believe it would affect my "writing" 🙄 yes I was a pretentious little fella alright😂🤷♂️) realising now that half my life has been spent wearing a mask of some sort or other is a wee bit of an adjustment to make. But then again I s'pose the thing is to survive, and keep trying? I certainly hope so Sue. Hope this finds you well (sorry for waffling I do realise I went on a bit 🙈)
Funny story I'm from florence Alabama used to play music with some boys from greenhill and they swore up and down Jason's mama lived down the road and when he was in town they would get him to set in with use that's been bout 10 years and I m still waiting for it to happen
Jason and Jimbo's harmonies on that last verse (around 08:30) give me goosebumps every time I watch this video... And I've easily watched it a few hundred times!
Some call this country but it's not. The fact that you can not label Isbell is ONE of the reasons he is appealing to me. Respect for anyone who grew up with the Band's music.
Got here from a magazine article about the 40th anniversarry of the last waltz. What a treat....funny how the drummer has the same shoulder shrug as levon .love it !!!
I had heard of Jason Isbell courtesy of whispering bob but I had not latched onto him, but then on the @uptheclarets messageboard there was a hauntingly beautiful music thread. Some fine soul posted a link to Elephant. ,i n the right hand margin I saw the link to this fine track. Being a long time fan of the Band I clicked the link. Hooked. I have since watched many tracks and acquired 4 CDs.. Total class.
Literally no words to describe how great Jason Isbell is as a songwriter...singer and guitar player...best songwriter since Springsteen in his prime. Legend in the making..His last four albums are simply masterpieces. Can't wait to see this guy and his amazing band play live.
What these two did today and stood up against The CMA Awards makes them true American heros. The three that have passed and couldn't speak for themselves makes Amanda and Jason true pioneers in the business . They've started a movement, true hero's.
Just an absolutely incredible concept for a song and done extremely well. I'm sure Richard and Rick are honored. Two men who deserve their own song. Real art! Jason is the man.
that's an homage to rick danko and richard manuel. two giants we were lucky to have tear through the scene leaving a body of work i still lean on when its needed
"A coupla my favorite singers that ever lived" And they sure knew how to live! They did a lot more living in their short lives than most folks could in several lives!
At the risk of being sac-religious, I say this dirge is the "Stairway to Heaven" of the 21st century. Jason ought to be the biggest star on the planet.
I call this song a modern “Stairway to Heaven” because it is something of a symphonic temple. What Jason has done here is create a hymn that we can weave our own thoughts into. All of us “old rockers” who have been around for a few decades have heroes who ascended the stairway too soon. Jason’s creation gives us something to project our own personal hero worship into……………………………………… Would Lynott have been proud of me? Is he the man I wanna be?.............................................enough said
