Body & facial hair were considered the hieght of virility in the 60s & 70s. Also as someone just pointed out, the jokes are funnier if you're familiar with the Bond franchise. Example: the name Alotta Vagina is a spoof of a Bond girl from the old films named Pussy Galore.

Some of what you call "dad jokes" are usually called "one liners". The James Bond movies are full of them and the Austin Powers movies make fun of that and a lot of other elements from them, like the villain that throws shoes, is directly inspired by a James bond villain who throws a very sharpened hat as if it was a Frisbee.

Man, it's been AWHILE since I watched an Austin Powers film, on TV or when my mom rented them at Hollywood Video in the late 90's to early 2000's (putting it like that, i've really shown my age lol), I mean was WAY to young to watch these, but this film introduced me to Mike Myers, Elizabeth Hurley, Michael York, Mindy Sterling and Seth Green, now I know them for their vast careers, but this is what started it all! (For more Elizabeth Hurley roles, she was in the "Bedazzled" Remake with Brendan Frazer, The "My Favorite Martian" Remake, Marvel's Runaways on Hulu, The Royals on E!, and the early 2000's Samson and Delilah. She's been working since the mid 80's to now, and she's 55 currently and still gorgeous, like more fit and tone than she ever was!)

The woman called 'alotavagina' was spoofing how the bond films often had the bond girls with double entendre names like 'xenia onatopp, honey ryder, pussy galore, plenty o'toole'. The Austin Powers I think were also responsible for why the Daniel Craig Bond films became more serious in tone as the parody made the pre-Craig films seem silly.

I particularly like the way that after a henchman dies you get to see what happens when their families and friends are informed (‘decapitated by an ill-tempered mutated sea bass’) which I always found hilarious. Thanks for reacting to it, glad you enjoyed it.

So... The style used in this movie is very much taken from the 60's, especially the "swinging London". The chesthair is a parody of how most male sex symbols up to the 80's were very hairy (it was Arnold and Jean-Claude that put a stop to that). Mike Myers is Canadian, but he has family from Britain (which is why he does decent accent impressions). The teeth is kind of a joke on the whole "British people have bad teeth" prejudice Americans have (the UK has less cosmetic dental procedures done, so many in the US think that means "bad" teeth and not "normal teeth like the rest of the planet except for the US"). The opening song is a classic 1960 song called "Soul Bossa Nova" by Quincy Jones.

If I were to sum up the Austin Powers series in one sentence it would be "The jokes are mostly stupid but they are also mostly very well told."

It is actually the British sixties, beatles, rolling stones, the who dressed like that. And it is a n hommage to 007’s On Her Majesty’s Secret Service... 😉

Austin Powers movies had a lot of parody: mainly James Bond, and Star Wars, Beatles, etc. Would be better if watched older James Bond movies before this.

This movie is definitely a great satire of the gentleman spy film genre, especially Bond, and very quotable. My favorite is one I tend to use in conversations: “I’m With It. I’m Hip.”

“Now, I was never allowed to watch this as a kid or a teenager...” Man, fifth grade my teacher showed us this in class (I think it was the last day of school, shortly after it came out on video). That would never fly nowadays of course, but it’s simultaneously both amazing that that happened and amazing how times change.

The game twister was advertised for children, but, at the time the cultural push was for swingers. Most people didn’t talk about it, but, twister was one of the games that was played at swingers parties as a way to break the ice. It was a quick way to find out who was interested in who without saying a word.
