AUSTIN VS MCMAHON | Wrestling's Greatest Rivalries (Episode 1)
Over the course of wrestling’s history, the question has often been asked, what’s the greatest storyline of all time? To some, the answer to this will stretch back to the territory days for angles like Dusty Rhodes’ battles with The Four Horsemen, The Von Erich’s being forced to defend their promotion from The Fabulous Freebirds, or Andy Kaufman’s time down in Memphis battling Jerry Lawler. For others however, it will be something far more modern such as the story of The Yes Movement, The Mega Powers Explosion, or the birth of the NWO. That said, for our money, there’s one story which stands above everything else as the greatest of all time, and that’s “Stone Cold” Steve Austin’s war with Vince McMahon in the late 90’s. Yes, the battle between the boss and his top guy raging against the machine has become arguably the iconic feud in WWE history, but how did it all happen? Well, join us today as we take a deep dive into the entire story from start to finish in Austin vs. McMahon, Wrestling’s Greatest Rivalries Episode 1.

The Austin McMahon rivalry was not only must see TV but it was the ultimate game changer that altered the course of history for WWE that helped them win the Monday Night Wars. Stone Cold was the guy that everyone could relate to in terms of working for the annoying boss who you wanted to see get knocked out and it made you want to watch Raw every week to see what these two were going to do to each other. I'll admit it did drag on quite a bit during the summer of 99 as i felt that it should have concluded at Wrestlemania 15 when Austin won the title back but i won't deny that whenever you had Stone Cold and Vince McMahon together, you always knew that it was going to be entertaining

A good villain is what carries a narrative. Storylines pop when the hatred for the heel feels real and he hits an emotional hot button. Nobody has ever or will ever do that in wrestling like Mr. McMahon. He is literally the symbol of the wealthy elite ruling class mocking the masses who do all the labor to make jerks like him rich, while also being an over the top cartoon super villain in a merging of fantasy and reality. It was perfect.

@danielwhite1135
@danielwhite1135 Год назад
Attitude Era was just plain better and unfortunately will almost certainly never be rivalled for a few reasons. 1) You had a whole bunch of talent there at the same time from the top guys such as Austin, Rock, Undertaker, HBK, HHH, but also so many of the mid-cards were so good to watch as well. 2) The stories were just so much more entertaining than anything since. 3) The "Attitude" just worked and raised the bar, and when it went "PG" it lost something that it was never able to recapture. Also the loss of competition caused a decline as when WWE no longer had to compete with companies like WCW the downgrade of effort was inevitable! I cannot watch wrestling these days, but I am glad to have enoyed that era as it really was entertaining!

I always thought McMahon not wanting Austin to win the WWF title at WM14 because he'd be a PR nightmare was kind of silly when you consider who he won it from and how that guy behaved at the time. I mean it was even in HBK's newly formed factions name that he wasn't exactly a classy guy. Would have made more sense if he won it from Bret Hart had he still been in WWF at the time. Not that the latest version of Hart was a golden boy but he was the type of character that a heel McMahon could perceive as a "class act". Couldn't really do that with DX HBK.

So, technically, all of those promotions had their own "greatest" that shouldn't be compared to those of other promotions. They were all products of their place and time/era. I remember all of them, as I'm an old bastard. lol. I'd even argue that the WWWF's greatest rivalry was between Bruno Sammartino and Larry Zbysko. that was epic! If Vince had been a full-time worker, I would rank Mr. McMahon as the single greatest heel character ever. I only slightly knock him down due to not being a full-time worker to second place, just behind the Million Dollar Man, which honestly seems fitting considering the Million Dollar Man was what Vince designed as his own gimmick if he were ever to be a wrestler. So, with that said, the Million Dollar Man was really the testing grounds for the Mr. McMahon character, paying everyone off, bringing them over to your side, buying your way through, etc. What gives it to the Million Dollar Man though is being a full-time worker. He was a very skilled one at that, and that laugh will always live in memory.

Austin vs. McMahon feud didn't end at WM17 permanently. They both turned face during the invasion angle but then Austin turned heel again and joined the Alliance so they were rivals again but now Austin was heel and McMahon was face. Albeit their long-time personal rivalry wasn't the focus of the feud. But after Survivor Series 2001 when the Invasion angle ended they did a double switch with Austin turning face and McMahon going heel and the feud picked up again with Booker T being McMahon latest hand-picked opponent for Austin. Can't remember if it continued much beyond that but I know it went on at least that long.

You're right, it's a simple and old story line. But for it to get So big, you have to give credit to McMahon and Austin. "Stone Cold Steve Austin" has become a character that is in the dialect even today. Both men played their characters perfectly, and yes, "Stone Cold Steve Austin" was a character that wasn't bound to Texas, or the USA. A simple story that led by the audience, rather than tried to lead them...

It can't be a rivalry if it wasn't real.

When I went into the work force at 16 I didn’t realize I would always subconsciously view myself as stone cold Steve Austin and my boss as heel McMahon, it took me be by the time is was 23 to realize my bosses weren’t that bad I just wanted my stunner moment.
