Australia's Most Inbred Family 

It's disgusting how a person could abuse their daughters and grand daughters in this way.

This is so freaking sad. What a tragedy to be born a girl in that family. It makes me wonder if the mothers cried whenever they gave birth to girls.

This is horrific. I fail to understand how at least SOME members of this family could NOT know that what they were doing was wrong. True story: when I was 12, I developed a crush on my handsome older cousin. This was not his fault at all, and he never once did anything inappropriate to me. I was just a young girl noticing the boys were suddenly very interesting. My mom had a sharp eye (thank God), so she sat me down for a talk about why we don't have those kinds of thoughts about people in our family. Mom knew that I just didn't know better. Moral of the story: educate your children about difficult and confusing issues. No problems will occur (mostly) if they just know right from wrong.

Holy cow.🙈 I DO have to note something though. IF this was just “normal behavior” and didn’t see anything wrong with it, why all the secrecy? Home births to no be discovered? Obviously, somebody somewhere knew this was wrong. Now, the poor girls raised this way probably had no clue. But SOMEBODY knew this wasn’t right.

I have two stories of inbreeding. First, I had a daughter in 94’, who is the only female ever in the world to live with her disorder. The geneticist asked myself and my husband if we were related in anyway. We are not. Later, we divorced and I found out his maternal grandparents were 1st cousins and married one another. I went on to remarry and his adopted niece was obviously handicapped. She is the product of a man molesting his 13 year old daughter and impregnating her. The mother is also her sister. The mother gave her up and moved away. We have now learned that the father/grandfather of my niece was released from jail. The part that I’m completely shocked with is the daughter let him come live with her, husband, and two daughters!

My jaw steadily lowered as I watched this.

I feel a large amount of pitty for the victims in that family. 😢

While I do agree that incestuous relationships can be confusing and can also become normalized, the idea of them not knowing it was wrong goes right out the window if the mom made the girls give birth at home so no one found out who fathered their children - I'd say that made it pretty clear they all knew it was messed up. They just got used to it

I actually felt bad seeing some of them in handcuffs… Considering they were already partly inbred, they probably weren’t the brightest bulb in the box, so if the parents said it was normal, they just went with it and didn’t have the mental capacity to figure out otherwise. That’s not their fault. Tim, on the other hand… He was truly disgusting. He probably took the whole thing of his wife being raised to think incest is best as a free pass. Seriously?! Just because you know you can get away with it doesn’t mean you should, Tim… And it’s bad enough to make a baby with your own daughter, but to then make a baby with your granddaughter/daughter and have a great granddaughter/daughter?! What was WRONG with him?! What’s worse is that the behavior is now learned by all his descendants and you can’t unlearn that easily. I’m curious what they plan to do with them now? You can’t very well put them in prison if they truly didn’t understand it was wrong due to upbringing and isolation or just reduced mental capacity. That would be a crime in and of itself.

On South Mountain is a devastating book on an inbred family in Nova Scotia as well.

Just a side note - there is no rabies in Australia so the dogs couldn’t have been ‘rabid’. We do have lyssa virus, which is in the same family as the rabies virus, but it’s only known to infect bats, horses and humans.

This is so involved that I genuinely couldn't initially parse some of what you said, I had to replay bits (edit: just to be clear, this has nothing to to with how you explained it, you explained the relationships as clearly and concisely as you always do). I was feeling a bit stupid until I realised that because it's not normal for someone's father to be their grandfather etc., my brain couldn't just automatically/subconsciously organise these people into a typical family tree or social network diagram like it normally would. They were breaking so many of the basic "rules" of familial relationships that I couldn't just see the family tree in my head, as I usually can. I actually had to think about it to picture it. Wow

When growing up in Central NY, there was a family up the road from my father's home whom I later found out the father committed incest with one of his daughters at their home. This is worse than tragic. This is absolutely horrifyingly sick and degenerate. The brothers should not have been acquitted but should have served more time than the sisters/nieces ever did since the males should never put the females in such a situation in the first place. The matriarch may have been the catalyst with the patriarch willingly consenting in the idea. Truly sick.

I found their real names and social media. The older kids definitely missed their family and went back. That is all they knew. One girl seems to have more serious disabilities and is miserable. There is nothing on the littles. They do have other relatives who left the compound and seem to be living normal, healthy lives.

This is so disgusting, I now have to watch something that makes me feel better about the human race.

What I take from this is - the foul depths to which humanity can plummet...

I wonder where Kimberley is today. I hope she's living a calm life wherever she is.

Guess this could be an important life lesson as to why it's important to meet the family FIRST of anyone you might be considering to marry. This family is proof of making sure the family tree branches out!

I'm in Australia and I have never heard of this family before. Looking at the map you showed at the beginning I've got a good idea of roughly where they live and it is rural definitely but not outback. It's a very sad story😢the real disgusting people are those who committed these monstrous acts and those who knew what was happening and didn't get help. But I can understand that the main perpetrator would have been extremely overbearing. Let's hope there are no more like this family but you never know. 🙏🏻🙏🏻

The fact that these people are still alive and yet could give the Habsburgs a run for their money with regards to inbreeding makes my skin crawl.

So I had never actually heard of the colt family until today.. but they were discovered around the time I was pregnant and living in Sydney and I remembered at one of the prenatal appointments the doctor asked me and my partner if there was any chance we were related.. I was so confused because he’s Filipino and I’m white, very obviously not related and she was like “sorry, I just have to ask everyone” I still find it unusual but I guess these people might be the reason it was something medical professionals had to ask..

Whenever somebody says they want to homeschool their children out in the country you have to wonder. Isolation and insulation are generally not good for children.

The Whittaker's are not all inbred. This Colt family is the worst. Despite legal action one of the mom's or aunties are still trying to get into contact with one of her sons. Even though the law ordered her to stay away from the kids.

The colt family. Tim and June Colt were from New Zealand and moved to Australia in the 1970’s. If Junes parents were brother and sister, it would be interesting to look into that family line. However, Junes maiden name isn’t listed anywhere that I can find. Colt is not their real name and all their Christian names are also pseudonyms.

I had a dog who was an inbred. ZHer father was her brother. She suffered from epilepsy which her seizures got progressevly worse over the years. She had a seizure and lost any strength in her back legs and couldn't walk for the last 4 years of her life. Because she was well taken care of she lived past her life expectancy. On average Pekingese live up to 15 years. She lived to be 16 going on 17.

Tim was disgusting. Were there no outsiders that they could meet and mix with? Or did the abuse start so young that it was ingrained before they were able to sort out their own preferences?

They knew it was wrong if the mother wouldn't allow them to seek medical because of questioning.

I think using the term “disgusting” to describe members of this family is unnecessarily moralistic and judgmental. From an anthropological perspective, the real issue with incest are the genetic implications - hence why cultural religious texts like the Torah spoke wisdom like “the sins of the father are visited upon the sons”, etc…” I find this story horribly sad, but I have compassion for most of this clan for living in such ignorance. It reminds me of a story my mom, a nurse doing a home visit many years ago in eastern Kansas, told me. A laborer at her employer complained during his annual physical that he wished his wife would quit having babies. They had, unbelievably, 19 children. When my mom visited their very backward home, she discovered that neither the husband nor wife understood that sexual intercourse caused pregnancy! Hard to believe, but true. After learning of the birds and the bees, voila! - no more babies. (Let me add that this story is not at all representative of the State of Kansas, which gave my class and I an excellent education). My point, is that unless we each strive for greater knowledge and truth, we are all condemned to our own private versions of ignorance and its consequences. I’d like to know more about the greater context of this situation. Was this family extremely isolated? Were the incestuous behaviors learned from just one or two people originally? And did those people understand both the biological danger and the social view of their behavior? Were these originators low functioning (low IQ)? And so on. Interesting piece.

My siblings and I were warned about inbreeding whilst very young. We had many inbreds locally. I was born in a small isolated village in Sussex where incest and inbreeding were common, the effects of which were obvious even to a small child.
