He had an older brother that was also affected and a younger sister too, their mother also had these facial characteristics. His older brother came home from work ill one day and went to bed, he was found dead in bed the next day aged 17/18. My classmate was also found dead in bed at the age of 22/23. Both brothers were found to have heart defects and after the second brother died their mother and sister were found to have the same defects and were successfully treated. The whole family had vast amounts of treatment over the years, you would have thought that after having 2 children with the same disabilities that they would have figured that more would be a likelihood. My classmate was not Asian and so I don't know how the disability arose with his mother, but it was inherited. Things are too PC these days and you can bet your bottom dollar that if there was the public campaign that there ought to be to put a stop to first cousin marriages, it would be branded racist when in fact all that any sane person wants is to protect the resources of the NHS and the welfare state by simply avoiding the creation of individuals whose lives are absolutely blighted by the sorts of conditions seen here.

It is legal to marry your cousin in Canada. In fact I think the US is the only Western country that prohibits cousin marriages. Each state is different though. I live in NY and it’s legal to marry your cousin here.

American woman here. My parents married in 1985 and my dad told me before him and my mom got their license, the registrar gave them the name of a doctor to run blood tests on them. When I was in sexual education class in the early 2000s, my teacher told my class that before getting married, we had to get bloodwork done. Fast forward to around 2006-ish. My state (New Jersey) decided to drop the blood test requirements for couples planning to get married. I just got married last month to my husband and we didn’t have to get any bloodwork done. It was so strange. However, to get the license filled out and notarized, my husband and I went in front of a registrar with my brother-in-law bearing witness and he had to sign the license too to tell the registrar that neither of us were still married to other people, guilty of crimes, etc. I think blood tests need to be brought back here most definitely. Back in high school, my teacher said if you tested positive for syphilis, you’d be denied permission to marriage. Now, they’ll let anyone with STDs tie the knot and spread disease to their unborn children.

I’m confused... I understand this is a cultural norm and it’s important to keep certain traditions. The problem is when so many children are born with rare diseases and abnormalities, didn’t they ever consider abolishing this tradition? Especially after all these studies came out that it’s detrimental to the health of their children...
