Australia has a rich history in motor racing, with names such as Brabham, Brock, and Webber. But one name has been neglected in that list; Wayne Bramble, Australia's only word champion slot car racer...

I started going to Hornsby slot car track in the late 70’s. People can often judge too quickly but I’ve found it to be a very satisfying sport. Made some good friends. I’m 53yr old now and still am involved in the sport. In fact I built 3 flexi cars this afternoon. Call me a nerd but it’s a badge of honour if you ask me.

It's great to see slot car racing getting some publicity, even if it is the crazy wing cars. There are much cheaper, slower alternatives of vintage and modern production slot car racing and in my opinion they provide far more fun.

I raced against Wayne Bramble in either the 2012 USRA Nats or 2013 Worlds at Buena Park Raceway. I hear that he and Cody will race at the 2022 Worlds which will be hosted by Piranha Speedway in Whittier, CA. I look forward to race against both of them next year.

Yeah mate. Blame the decline of slot cars of games and the internet. It's not the fact that it's not fucking easily accessible or cheap to new comers trying to compete. Fuck off with that bullshit. $700 for a motor that last 5 minutes? No wonder everyone is choosing better entertainment that lasts much, much longer.

What initially in the US was that AMF (owner of bowling alleys and bowling equipment manufacturers) bought out a lot of the slot car tracks and then just closed them to try to get more people to bowl by limiting their choices...

If you run open class... You better have deep pockets... We was sponsored by Ernie P (owner of EPIC/Trinity) back in the day. He sponsored us in RC as well, we ran 1/10th scale 2wd buggy and stadium truck back in the 93 until early 2000s and 4wd buggy Off road starting in 95 until the early 2000s.. We ran for/Sponsored by Team Losi, Trinity/EPIC, Novak, Lunsford, Hummad Gruman and Airtronics. We was part of the Team Losi/Trinity Ifmar world championship team for 1995, 1997 and 1999 and was super proud to be part of the Losi Worlds team in 1997 when Kinwald won the IFMAR worlds at the Ranch Pit Stop with his XXcr. Ernie P took gooooood care of us in our opem class slot car races making sure we had world class motors and always running fresh motors (these open class motors are BIG money and don't last long due to the massive amount of RPM they turn and the high current draw that the windings deal with. Back then a world class motor could be 800 to 1000 dollars) and in our 1/10 scale off-road days he kept us with world class modified motors that was dyno tuned to the track and gave us what we needed and supplied us with the Sanyo 1700scrc matched "world tech" packs that we needed to supply us with the horse power we needed! I remember watching our armatures being wound (by the talented hands of Mr Bill) when we needed a specific turn and wind for some track conditions when normal 10x1s 11x4s and so on and so forth wouldn't give us exactly what we needed... I remember running a the Tampa Winter champs in 96 I believe and it was a super fast track and unlimited traction in the blue groove and slick as ice if you got out of the groove. We needed. Smoother power delivery to not wheelie coming out of turns and needed as much top end as we could get and lower amp draw as the mad traction was killing batteries and causing us to nearly dump half way thru the last minute of the race... So we was wound a very odd ball motor and something i have never ever seen before... We was running 9 turn Single winds and he wound us (us meaning the whole trinity/Team Losi team) quad wind 8 turns motors.. The quad wound 8 turn has more top end then the 9 turn single (the lower the wind equals more punch/acceration and higher amp draw but lower top end and the higher the wind the smoother the throttle band and softens punch/acceration and lowers amp draw.. Turns is how many wraps of copper wire are wound around the armature and winds is how many stands of copper wire make up the wire IE: a 10 turn single is ten turns of wire around the armature with a single solid wire and a 10 double would be ten turns of wire wrapped around the armature with two stands of wire wrapped ten time ect ect) but with a fair bit less amp draw so our batteries was getting us through the race and the power delivery was so much smoother and more tame that we wasn't wheelie out of tighter turns by just bumping the throttle a little to much and we had tons of top end so that we could lower our gearing a little and make it even easier on our batteries along and dial in a much acceration out the turns as we needed but not to the point of wheeling any time we was just a little to hard on the throttle and could run as tight a slipper clutch as we wanted beings we not didn't have to use the slipper to tame throttle response and prior to the motors that we was wound we couldn't go up in gearing to soften power delivery as that would have increased amp draw and we wouldn't have finished the race. The quad wind also gave us much more breaking power that was hugely smoother then the single wind... That day we all learned how amazing it was being sponsored by a world class motor company (Trinity) that came with us to all the big races and could build us specific motors on site and tune motors for us on the dyno not to mention brought tempura controlled crate that kept out batteries exactly where they needed to be temp wise and of course had a large supply of the best or the best cells/packs that was matched to the 1000ths of a volt and IR that was perfectly matched and as low as it got. Driving for Trinity to was an amazing experience as we always had the best motors in the world and the best batteries in the world along with the best support staff that you could ask for at every big race. And at Slot car races Mr Ernie P him self was there competeing as well as making sure who he sponsored had the best horse power omg the track and the most drivable and reliable motors on the track. We still catch up on FB from time to time and we are thinking about going back in to the big races in RC and may very well do it for the 2020 year... And you can bet if we do we will be running for Trinity and Team Losi. Btw when i say we i mean My brother and my self. We was the only brother/Sister that was sponsored back then and that was pretty cool and something that's extremely rare. In case you was wondering I was consistently from race to race the faster one... My brother was a world class racer in every way but pushed a little to hard at times and made mistakes because it and I was a little calmer and more methodical waiting for the right times to make passes and such resulting in me being consistently faster on most tracks. If the track praised super aggressive driving and passing then most times he would be faster on that track BUT those types of tracks are few and far between so him being faster was rarely the case.

I don’t like those wing cars. The sport was originally for all kids and adults because the sport was affordable. I like the 1:32 scale cars with their magnets taken out. That is how the cars were raced in the 60’s. More of a skill sport back then.

dphotos most beginner races at my local slot car shop are all 1:32 scale it's more fair and fun so the winner isn't the fastest it's the most skilled
