LOVED this classic period of NZ cricket. Especially when we played in the B&H World Series Cup over January/February. These one dayers of course followed NZ’s first test series win on Australian soil, Hadlee at his peak.
I watched this game live . Was so,proud of NZ team that tour. Contrary to what others say below Australia had a superb side in Eighties. Any team with Border , Boon , Marsh , Phillips , Reid , McDermott and some guy called Steve Waugh is pretty good side. Windies and Australia teams to beat in eighties.
Are you sure??? WI were absolutely dominant in the 80's but after 83 when G Chappell, Lillee and Marsh retired plus a number of experienced players defected to rebel SAF tours Australian cricket was not strong until 1989 and not up with the top 2 until really 1993 to 1995. The players you mention in your comment were, apart from Border still finding their way in international cricket.
Panzer Valkyrie no Australia at this point was at such a low point that Allan Border was close to quitting as captain. They really didn’t recover until the 87 World Cup and then the 89 Ashes series.
True. Boon & Marsh were a very strong opening pair. Plus Dean Jones and Border down the order. It was more in test cricket where Australia were struggling in the mid-80s. They would almost always win the home B&H World Series Cup competition unless the invincible Windies were in the finals.
