I occasionally had a burger on Motorway services in the UK before arriving in Aus with a dill pickle. The beetroot just seemed natural. But I am from Lancashire and we eat a lot of pickled beetroot. I work on a lot of Charity Barbies. I found that cooking the onions in just the oil from the snags (or no oil) + water + BBQ sauce works well the sugar in the sauce caramelizes them nicely and they don't go greasy and hold their shape longer as you wait for customers. Looks good.
stick a skewer threw the center to stop the filling falling out, we call that a bacon egg and cheese hawaian burger in nz, if you use the big slices of pickled beetroot, and beef steak tomato, runny egg ,onion rings, leaf of iceberg lettuce the skewer keeps in all in after a hefty pressing to break the yolk the egg must be on top so it runs down, some do away with the buns and use 2 extra meat patties top and bottom
We are newer subscribers and are catching up on your earlier vlogs, and what fun you make out of cooking! We like the way you keep your vlog compact, to the point and on the lighter side-no pun intended. Thank you!
As an avowed omnivore, I must say that I love all of the ingredients separately, however as an individual from the southern states of the U.S.A., it had never occurred to me to combine them all at once. Sounds like a must try!
Just watching a few of your past videos with hubby (well he is here in spirit even if he is snoring on the lounge). Thankyou for adding beetroot and tomato sauce to your burger. So many fish and chip shops leave off the beetroot and use bbq sauce. I refuse to go back if they don’t offer beetroot. Anyway well done on all your videos, they are really enjoyable and I hope you are surviving this pandemic we are all living through right now. Take care and best wishes from Australia.
Been away for a few days, and come back to the narrowboat Chef channel, looking forward to the next meal to make, when these two dopplegangers are on board with very strange accents telling me to put pineapple and beetroot on my burger. For a few moments, I had to sit down, and fan myself with a kipper to bring me round so I could watch again, to see if my eyes and hearing weren't deceiving me. What gave it away? I very much doubt that doppleganger Ryan would also test the onions 8 times. So it was you two along......wicked people!!! Belated happy Australia day mates......
G'day from another expat Aussie living here in the UK. OMG am so craving one of those right now. Been over here for 7 years now and am doing my narrowboat research..(and plotting)...But been 10 years plus since I had a burger with the lot....Looking forward to following your adentures.
They are simply the best burgers aren’t they. We hadn’t had one since coming over until this video and biting into it just reminded me so much of Aus! Nice to see a fellow Aussie expat, might see you on the canals if you get a narrowboat. 😊🇦🇺
Save for the pineapple and pickled beets, which I will try next, we call that the cardiac burger, especially if you skip the healthy bits, i.e. green stuff. Also a knife and fork job, either way, well done. Take care and God Bless, Paul from Florida.
Just by watching your amazing videos,l can see that the both of you have a fantastic lifestyle, just cruising along the different canal systems,on your epic adventures, those many locks you go though, are definitely hard work, but well worth it in the end, keep on cruising, awesome
G'Day, and wow.... congratulations on this week, a huge jump in subs, you are so close to 600, you will be at 1000 by this time next month. G'Job.... :)
Nice job guys! Aussie here living in US, and i miss a good burger with the lot/works! Cannot get decent beetroot here or the aussie style bacon!! I think you now need to make meat pies and/or sausage rolls 😃 thanks!
I'm embarrassed to say I had forgotten about 'a burger with the lot', but once you said it all the memories came flooding back. Awesome you two. Loved it.
It's coming up to dinner here and now I'm STARVING. I'm not real keen on tinned beetroot on my burgers - I much prefer slices of fresh-cooked beetroot. It's sort of like slices of purple potato, but softer and sweeter and without the pickle flavour from the tin.
Oh , how I miss Joe's cafe on the Burwood Rd in Sydney , the best Sunday hangover cure ever . Only he would have grilled the pineapple and the eggs would be cooked in an egg ring 😊 🍔
Oh goodness! I'm just getting to your vlog after having followed Cruising the Cut (and the less than inspiring references to cheese sandwiches - just love David - but I was really hoping for some variations on the theme there... a little grilled action or even welsh rarebit). Aussie burger with The Lot - so heavenly. Nutritionally I imagine you're only lacking the chocolate food group, but I guess that's what dessert would make up for :-) Thank you for the masterful balance of cooking and adventure narrative - and Ryan, your laugh is wonderful.
On one of our trips to Australia we spent a month in Sidney. We had lots of fantastic burgers. On one occasion we went to Bondi beach and I had the best burger ever at Macelleria. They also had a butcher display where you could pick out the steak you wanted and they cooked it. What a fantastic place. What a burger.
Looks delicious....yours must be the only narrowboat on the water with cheese being used as ballast....I don’t think I’ve ever seen a block that size....🍷🍷
I am 64 - spent my whole life travelling - met thousands of Ozzies - befriended many - dated a few - I had no idea you two were Australian - great vid but the last vid of your history was majestic thk you so much
Thanks Mark, glad you enjoyed it 😊 There is nothing better than travelling, at least in our opinion! Nice to hear from someone who has travelled all their lives.
I never add salt to my burgers because I put all kinds of toppings and most are already salty like cheese, mustard, ketchup, pickles etc😂 beetroot sounds awesome tho. I've added coleslaw too!
You will have to try beetroot on your next burger then! We only add a small amount of salt to ours and it’s only to enhance the flavour of the beef, not to actually taste the salt 😊
Don't know that I can pin words on any sort of logical explanation for the thing, but yeah, being lactose intolerant and still having occasional cheese, sour cream, and ice cream is a thing. Eventually you get an intuitive sense of how far 'outside the box' you can venture, and how often, with minimal 'paying the price' for it. Example, last week I was really, really, hungry for sour cream and onion dip with potato chips. Got away okay with it but I ain't touching anything dairy this week! _(even tough I'm still hungry for more of that chip and dip!) (didn't brew up the dip from scratch like a true canal chef, got a tub of sour cream & stirred in some dry powder onion soup mix. Then decided it needed some bacon bits and minced garlic!)_
I'm having a lot of fun going through the comments :-) What does it mean when I prefer my burgers made of beans and veggies, but enjoyed the heck out of watching this vid? eek! (wiping the drool off my keyboard...) (ps good luck to Sylvia Page on her 30 day vegan adventure; let us know how it goes!)
They have to make beetroot and black bean burgers with vegan cheese and no bacon version when we visit them, and they still taste great - better for my cholesterol levels too ;-)
Patricia P, Pixel says yes please, bring me treats, I like the soft ones!! 🤣 We love going through the comments too, there are some real gems! As Carrie A (Maggie’s mum) says, when they come over to visit, it will be all vegan cooking on the channel for those weeks 😁 Ryan can make some amazing vegan versions of meals!
@@NarrowboatChef oh my goodness!! I didn't realize Carrie A was your Mum, Maggie! I thought she was just some nice lady who followed your channel and who kindly invited a random stranger (a fellow Veggie Person) from Canada to come along to enjoy the eats at Chez Narrowboat (I've renamed your NB, by the way)...(laughing here!) Please tell Pixel Auntie Patricia will do her best to find Just The Right Doggie Treats :-) xx (ps to Carrie A, I think your daughter is quite special, she is loverly! and a real credit to her Mum : )
Here in America, we call that a Bib Burger because, without one, you'd have to remove your shirt to lick off the drippings. Those plastic bibs work best for that drill;-)))! My choice for cheese is Gorgonzola or Stilton - YUM, YUM, ESPECIALLY with pineapple and beetroot! Be well - give Pixel a nice pat too!
Hmm, that’s a tricky question... I (Maggie) spent some of my younger years down south and always called them potato cakes, then when we spent some of my later years in Queensland, it became potato scallops - which was very confusing as scallops are a seafood that I do not like! Personally, I prefer potato cakes! 🤭😂
Damnit, I'm going to have to stop watching your cooking videos first thing in the morning and last Ty thing at night the heart burn is killing me. Pickled beetroot is brilliant on burgers! I maintain that I'm hearing a northern English accent out of Maggie occasionally.
The heart burn is totally worth it though, right? 😂😉 When we first came to the UK, we were in the northern part of the country, so perhaps I have more northerner in me! 😁
That looked awesome. Burger cheese and onion is my favourite, with bacon and eggs would be pushing the boat out but pineapple and pickled beetroot will be an adventure. Cornichons are pickled and delicious with burger so the earthy beetroot should be amazing. I’m going vegan on the forks over knives plan for 30 days so do I have the monster burger before or after the plan? Thanks for a great video.
I always watch your vlogs with a smile on may face - I tried the risotto and was impressed but this has to be the best ... Australia day and a burger and to hell with my cholesterol problem I want it with the lot but as Sylvia said, pineapple and beetroot would be an adventure worth taking
Thanks Martin, we love reading your comments! Pleased to hear you decided to give risotto another shot and liked it 😊 Next up, burger with pineapple and beetroot! 😁
I love a good burger.I make my own in the summer for the barbie.I throw a few onions on but that's about it haha. The stew was lovely by the way i tried it.Have a great day.
Sorry Maggie, that sonded like a drunk Pom trying, and failing to do an Ausiie accent. Delighted to see pickled beetroot naking a resugence in Haute Cuisine. Used to be a mainstay of Mum's larder "up North", paricularly as a side to Lancashire Hot Pot. Do you think you might improve if yopu replaced the "caramelized" onions with pickled onion slices (another Nporthern classic)?
good day mate , ausie ausie oy oy oy , , bit of hp sauce mixed in the burger ,or on the side , we can get fresh pineapple in australia? what is a traditional ausie dish ??happy cooking, BIT OF ENGLISH STILLTON ON THE BURGER , OR ANY BLUE CHEESE
I give you 9 out of 10 for that. You lost a point for not toasting the roll. The double bags used in Australia do a great job of keeping the burger together as you eat it.
Have to disagree with this one....1st...Pineapple does not belong on a hamburger...ever!...save it for the Pizza...:) Leave off the bacon, cheese and the 'salad greens', but add grated carrot and iceberg lettuce. My take on an Aussie burger...:):):):)
