this is what i went through in the fires along the southeast coast of Australia in 2019 and 2020
the video and fires start on the 26th November 2019 near Nelligen NSW Australia about 1 kilometer from my home on the Clyde river, over the next 7 to 8 weeks i had the fires knocking at my back door about 4 times, not only on the 26th November but the 31st of December 2019, 1st January 2020 also the 6th January 2020,,,,,,
it is more for myself to look back on but also for people to maybe learn what to expect never been through a fire storm like in this video when it totally blacks out makes day night and the sounds of the fire etc
these fires stretched from Sydney right down to Adelaide, at the end there are some pitches of people on the beach sheltering from fires with their pets and a few possession they could grab in short time they had to get to safety, the fires have burnt out millions of hectares of national parks, farm land also thousands of houses as well as business and people dreams

maybe where your are BUT not here,,,,,,,,,, im in what this council calls a smoke free zone, so unless you have slow combustion heater or are having a BBQ there is no other fires permitted at all, we use to be able to go to the rural fire brigade and they would look at where, what, and why we needed a permit, make sure it was safe and we had clearance, water, houses etc etc and then when the weather and time of year was right we would be issued a permit for a one or two day window,,,,,, was a pain in the ass but worked well,,,,,,,,,,,,,, now i have to travel to the waste recycle centre 40min drive one way and pay $35 one large trailer to leave green waste,,,,,,,,,, some idiots dont wear seatbelts, so does this mean the rest of us can not drive cars????????

Those trees that burn like that are called Widow Makers. It's really terrible on the firefighters because trees like that will just collapse at any minute. They are what kill a lot of firefighters when it comes to putting out flames in a lot of brush. Thank you for putting this up for us to be able to see your experience from the other side of the world. Prayers from the US East Coast.

Hey mate hope you're all good and you've had some rain, just want to let you know the Greens party have had no control in parliament or councils, meaning they are not responsible for the accused back burning policies and green litter. They barely have one seat, which means they can't do anything. I'll be happy to send you some articles and stats through if you would like, but you'll find that hazard reduction burning(back burning) was 203 800ha in 2015-16 (during labours office) with 8900km of fire trails maintained. Then during liberals office 2016-18( and similar in 2017-18) hazard reduction was recorded as low as 88 136, with maintained trails "N/A". That's around 115 000 hectares different between the two parties. Take this information as you wish, but there's a serious misconception of the greens. They're currently pushing parliament to introduce traditional back burning methods for preparation for the future fire seasons. It's good to check facts before we all yell names, and I'm guilty for that as well. Ned

@@FishingAustralia_au its not just the greens though, all our state governments are to blame..... every state has made cuts to the fire fighting budget. and back burning is actually really hard to do, you cant just go out and do it whenever and when in drought with winters with not much rain it makes it harder. in victoria they had a control burn get out of control and destroy houses and that was in the winter. its a lot more complicated then people might think. anyway im not going to get into a debate about it because frankly i dont care for the greens party myself. but it annoys me when a major party like LNP come out and put the blame only on the greens. honestly everyone is to blame right down to district councils.
@FishingAustralia_au
@FishingAustralia_au 4 года назад
@@comeatmebro3229 you need 3 thinks to have fire! ,,,fuel,,,,,,, heat,,,,,,, oxygen,,,,,,,,, wind we can not control, heat well thats still to be found out if climate change is or is not making things hotter and if we can do anything so lets say we can not do anything with it BUT fuel we can try and do something about ,,,,,,,,,, and yes in 27 months we have had no rain but with the close to 50deg when this all went down it would not have mattered if it had rained a day/week before the 60/100km winds and heat would have dried it out,,,,,, i hope you seen the part were i show you the heat and the banana leaves ,,,,,,, thanks again for your comment
@comeatmebro3229
@comeatmebro3229 4 года назад
@@FishingAustralia_au i know what you need for fires, we have had them here as well, im just saying that a lot of people are throwing around the blame and not taking responsibility themselves the national LNP party is blaming the greens but earlier last year when the election was coming Labor come out with a policy to build a fleet of water bombing aircraft for Australia so that we dont have to borrow them all the time, the LNP said we dont need one, the NSW government cut the budget to FRNSW and the RFA, the same happened in Victoria and South Australia with there respective fire services. then we have the big one everyone keeps throwing around, burnoffs to lower fuel loads, yes there are fuckhead protesters who protest against it (thats got nothing to do with the greens party) but they have actually had a very small effect on burnoffs, the reason burnoffs have happened less is because you need very specific weather to actually do it safely and with the drought we have had its made those conditions happen less, you need rain and no wind to do burnoffs safely and we just havent had the weather to do enough. when you burn off in the wrong weather even in the winder it can be deadly, in victoria a controlled burn got out of control burnt down houses and killed a fire fighter and that was in the middle of winter. our politicians and councils are too busy throwing the blame game around and should instead each be taking some responsibility..

Just stumbled across this video. As a QLD Rural Fire fighter I have to say I Appreciate the effort to share this with everyone. I was not able to put my name down to help out this season as our small brigade was down a few members and we too have been busy chasing fire. You mentioned "Back burning would of helped, its not going to make much difference, if anything it will help it". I don't know about down south there, but up here in CQ we live by "more fire on the ground is never good." Back burning is your last resort, especially in those types of winds. you could start a back burn, the wind changes direction and now crews and the residence are in danger earlier. If you were to back burn those hills at that time, your actually making the fire front bigger, and when that fire meets the already growing wildfire, it increases the chances of spot fires because the merging of the two fire fronts is going to throw embers up into the sky and carry them making things worse. I believe this is taught in FMS (Firefighter Minimum Skills) but I learnt this back when it was called FM1. I have been a volunteer fire fighter since i turned 16. In 13 years I've seen the fires getting worse, the last 2 years have been the worst. As you stated, Back burning needs to be done, but people like to apply for permits to burn when the fire season starts which is the wrong time. Property owners need to wake up and back burn during the colder months, the slower the fire burns, the more effective the back burn is. Property owners should also realise that Brigades are there to help. If you request help to back burn your property, the will help. If a brigade helps with back burning, make a donation to the brigade/s that helped. Those donations help alot, in fact we finally have a new shed after many years fighting council, getting grants and fund raising. our shed can also be used as an evacuation center if needed now.

ooo wow thanks for putting your hand up to come down and help , when i mention back burning there are 2 house on that headland across the river they have a river frontage of about 50M maybe 1 or 2 KM behind them there is a fire front maybe 100km long the wind at the time was blowing towards these 2 house West and back up the block towards the fire, the wind with in the next couple hours was going to turn and blow to the East which meant this 100km front was directly coming our way, i agree less fire in these condition is better but as i say in the video if it was me id more than likely back burn just before the wind change for it could not make it worse , you are correct in all what you say and the fuel load has to be dealt with in the months its safe to do so , also what gets my back up is how our parliament is set up which leads to the government doing deals with 1 or 2 people to get things through and in return have to vote with them, some of this people that hold balance of power get in with as little as 4K votes, this has to change in my book ,,,,,,,,,,,,,, please subscribe and hit the bell to help my channel grow if not thank you for watching and commenting on this video thank you so much for you great comment

Fishing Australia if you look at the way it works we have the same fuel load on the ground all year , it dosnt change summer or winter . Also the drought has hardley changed summer or winter . It’s drier and hotter in the summer yes . So is the problem the fuel load or simply the summer months ??? We have fires every year in summer irrespective of fuel load . The only change is the air temp . So no fuel load isnt the problem the problem is the temp and low humidity. Now australia and California both have these fierce fires . So what’s the common link ??? Eucalyptus trees were planted on mass in Cali in the 1950s . To get eucalyptus oil out of the trees they are heated and distilled . So you heat the tree up and it lets the oil vapouris which causes the extreme fires we have . So no need to blame the scapegoat greenies . Fires are natural here . We just have to stop building homes in the bush or surrounded by bush .

I am not sure if Jumping into the river would have worked... Can u imagine how thick / hot the smoke would have been if the fire was actually around your area? I think it is impossible to breath in that circumstances and you would pass out / faint. You would need a full scuba dive set with hours of oxygen for that plan to work out. Glad you were lucky.
@FishingAustralia_au
@FishingAustralia_au 3 года назад
cheers mate,,, thanks for the comment ,,,, the fire and house burnt with in 1 km from my place it doesnt get match closer,,,, in the video you would see embers falling and you would have seen the smoke so thick it blacked out and i could not even see the touch in my hand,,,, yes tanks would have been great but this was not an option for me, having a couple kayak upside down and a tinny too ready in the water is all i had and you do what you think at the time ,,,,,, there was no leaving the roads to town were blocked for days ,,,,,,,,, you have to remember the fire was moving soooooo quick the 3 times they come close to me the winds were up around the 80km plus so the fire storm passes quite quick but doesnt leave a lot behind but moves ultra quick

I was due to travel through Nelligen in December 2019 to visit family in Batemans Bay, but couldn't get through via the Clyde, this was before the fires even reached the Bay. I used to live in Nelligen, its just surreal to see this footage but being a largely bush community, it's always on the back of your mind that a bushfire for the area would be devastating, so having A bushfire plan is vital.

183 people have been arrested for starting these fires and there were obviously more firebugs that were not caught by the police. To stop firebugs setting fire to our bushland in the future these 183 people need to face severe charges. I believe the maximum penalty for deliberately starting a bushfire has been increased from 14 years to 21 years’ imprisonment. People died because these idiots started bushfires so the charge should be arson causing death. The minimum sentence is apparently 5 years but this should be upgraded to between 8 and 10 years. If someone starts a fire that kills people it should be a life sentence. This is how you stop a billion animals being killed and over 25 people losing their lives.

@ReoRis72
@ReoRis72 4 года назад
@@bendennis2341 In my opinion that's not really true. 1. Fuel load is irrelevant when you get fires that spread via the canopy like these ones. 2. Burning forest breeds forest that burns well. We need less flammable trees, not trees that have been trained to burn then grow back fast so they can burn again next year. 3. There's evidence that one of the reasons Australia is a desert country is because the aboriginals changed the environment here, partly by burning a bunch of it down. So don't hold them up as some kind of experts. 4. Aboriginal land burning practices don't scale to millions of hectares. They are fine for your tribe in your valley, but don't work for everyone everywhere. There are lessons to be learned for sure, but its being help up as some kind of panacea and it's just distracting from the main problem, which is governments basing policy on who pays the most towards their reelection campaigns.
