The Australian Butcherbirds are the closest relatives of the Australian Magpie. Both these bird species have very melodious voices and can produce a variety of sounds. The call of the Pied Butcherbird is the most melodious and carries for long distances. We hear the Pied Butcherbirds more often than the Grey Butcherbirds, and it seems to us that when the Pied Butcherbirds are calling the Grey ones are silent. That could be just a coincidence or something to do with territory, or perhaps something about our location. But that is the reason we have not included the Grey Butcherirds calling in this video. Our property borders with the Wandoo National Park in Western Australia and all the birds are completely wild and not used to seeing people so they do behave differently to birds in cities and reservations which are frequented by people. The sounds in the background are mostly the Ring-necked parrots and Galahs, and also some Magpies and of course the Raven. It is a very noisy morning! There are times on our property when there is not a sound to be heard and other times the birds go crazy and seem to compete with each other at who can make more noise. During certain times of year, especially after a cold night, when the sun rises, it is often the time when they all want to be heard. This is such a morning.
