@DiggerMel what area's have you tried around the High Country (near Mt Bulla and Mansfield?) There's a lot of great spots around there full of deer, Sambar and Fallow mostly.
Awesome video/videos, I hope you keep them coming. I go out shooting with a few other guys based in the Northern rivers. We've been testing State Forests up this way and within 5hrs drive (which has proved disappointing thanks to 4wd and dirt bikes and people leaving litter all over them) and private properties which can be harder to get on but far more bountiful. Anyway, keep it up!
Thanks for the comment Superdon. Yeah State Forests are mixed bag. I almost feel that the government should designate some of FWD and dirk bikes and some for hunters because together it just does work. What ends up happening is that the dirt bikes flush out all the game and then there's nothing left for the hunters. It's a real shame. Your spot on regarding private property, but they are hard to find and get permission to shoot on. Takes a lot of work building relationships and trust. I'll keep at it mate, got plenty of videos lined up. I'm actually heading up to the high country this weekend so I'm hoping to film an epic Sambar hunt. Great video. I thought there was 7 species even though very minimal numbers but i believe Wapiti (Elk) are in Australia. I could be wrong. Either way great watch. Cheers for the upload.
Hi Mark! Yeah your right there is a very small population of Elk in Australia, they were introduced in the 1980s too. I didn't mention them because from what I've researched you mainly find them in deer farms and populations in the wild are small, potentially non existent. Love the video mate, gives a good basic insight into our deer species here in Aus! Would be cool to see you do more in-depth videos for each species! Would also be cool if you added some audio of the deer calls where relevant, but none the less an enjoyable video! Also would check and see how accurate the info on locations are, I've shot and seen plenty of red deer in SA, and know a few places in WA where they get hunted. Keep up the good videos mate 👍

Maybe I will do separate videos ok each sub species though. Getting rhe locations right is super tough. They move around so much and there is no centralised group or government body that tracks them. A mate of mine here in Tassie has a 28 point red deer mount (head, with neck back to shoulder, and all four hooves) on a ‘shield’ he took some years ago. Quite impressive. I’m just getting in to the Fallows here. Bought a 47 year old Marlin 336 30-30 just before WuFlu hit. The rifle was bought new by the previous owner, who put on a air rifle / 22 rimfire rated red dot on home drill and tap botch-job , and removed the iron sights, buggering up the dovetails in the process ( I dunno how he did it, but I can’t find anything that fits firmly enough to remotely work). Despite being personally not a fan of red dots on lever rifles, I’m stuck, but have (somewhat more properly) mounted a Sig Romeo on it using a short length of picatinny rail drilled to fit the skew-whiff receiver job.
Ah nice Andrew. So your mate got the red in Tassie? If so that's a great sign. Super interesting about your Marlin red dot combo. I've never hunted with a red dot before, certainly not hunted deer without a scope. How have you gone with it? Had any success?
@@Thehuntsmanshow nah. We’ve only got fallows here, except for a few private deer ‘farms’. The Marlin seems pretty good on the range. The action was very tight when I got it. I think the guy bought it, buggered it up with damaging the sights, put on the air rifle scope as a ‘fix’ and realised it couldn’t keep zero, then chucked it in the safe for 45 years, until I got it from the estate. I basically lubed the crap out of it, and spent hours during lockdown just running the action, using snapcaps occasionally. I also dremel polished the internals. I chucked in the Ranger Point Precision loading gate for good measure. I think it’s an Ackley 30/30, based on the uniform increase in my fired brass, but it has no markings to that effect.

Yeah me get 2 or 3 for the freezer could get more but would be a bit of a waste can’t understand why they wont allow us sell too too a game dealer like we do back home would solve a lot problems and a lot of waste plus be less reason for these wasteful areal culls

Hey mate, I live in Ballarat and was out Mansfield/jamison area over the Anzac long weekend. Unable to find any deer but saw clear signs of trail and feeding areas. Spot on, only problem I could see was there was some footage of a sika and some footage of chital when you were talking about fallow. But either way they do look extremely similar, hell I shot what I thought was a fallow deer a couple months ago. Turned out to be a red fawn with spots on it 😂 not arguing, tasted awesome
Yeah I only realised after publishing the mistake and now I can't change it. Glad you like the video though. I shot a Sambar yearling last month and the meat was white like chicken! Tasted like chicken too! So strange, not complaining though haha.

Haven’t shot a young one yet, but even the stags taste awesome and no game taste if you age the meat for a couple weeks. Fallow just seems way gamier, even the young ones if you age them have a distinct slight gamey taste. Some people love it and can’t even taste it but I can lll

I had a friend staying skth my family foe a couple of months and he smoked food every day haha. He made the best biltong. Sambar vs fallow for taste is am interesting one. I went to the state forest in NSW yesterday and we kept seeing roos jumping over the trail as we were walking. Then a big roo came out that looked different from the rest and jumped funny. It was only until we processed it we realised it was a Sambar Doe which was spooked by the other roos. Upsetting but still first deer seen in the wild.
Haha that's a cool experience. A great way to see your first wild dee, up close and personal. Roos often spook deer. That's why it's so important to move carefully around roos when hunting. You'll often find then together in the same area, eating the same feed. Spook the roos ans the deer will follow blowing your shot at a successful hunt. Thanks for sharing! - Chris

@@mitchimal haha that's the spirit. Just remember gut shot may seem violent, but nature is violent. Suffering is a part of life for all animals. Avoid it where possible of course, but don't let it eat you up :)

If you watched this be under the illusion there were no deer in WA. Also, no markers were placed for the state? We get plenty of deer in the southern ranges... but not the species mentioned by the commentary as "all over Australia"? Makes you wonder how accurate the other info really is? Love your stuff mate but try to cover all deer next time. The deer in WA may be uncontrolled release in the 1980's, but they have thousands now running wild. .. so worth a mention :)
Thanks for your feedback Jason. Your right, the video does need a few tweaks. The review is really designed to give a broad overview of deer in Australia communicating where the vast majority of them are. For instance, there is data that suggests very small populations of Elk in parts of Victoria, but thr likely hood of hunters finding them is very small. You're totally right, WA does have deer and its worth communicating that, just not on the same scald as other states. Maybe it's worth doing a follow up video.
I didn't know Aussie had so many types of deer. Glad we have no bears ... except the drop bears . We locals have adapted to them and have no fear of them

Hi Chris, there's parts of the Fallow deer species that isn't correct mate! You have Sika (Cervus nippon) and Chital (Axis axis) deer mixed up in your Fallow section 🙄🤔. Love your hog deer footage ❤. The hog deer stag footage looks very familiar mate?

Wow really Christian??? In Victoria? I've never seen them in farmland. Only every in the thick mountainous bush or on the fringes of bush/farmland. I'd love to hear more about the landscape you see them in. Are you sure they aren't Red deer your talking about? They can be a similar size.
@@Thehuntsmanshow in vic mate and they are sambar(wish they were reds) on the properties we were allowed to shoot on we would see sambar out in the paddocks, not all the time but they were there on a fair few occasions, depends on the hunting pressure i guess to how they act.

Haha that's a cheeky question. You'll most likely find Fallow deer in the Hunter Valley. Probably on farm land fringing state park would be my guess. You'll have to go out and cover some country mate lol that's the best way to find them.
Hey man, great video. On a broadside cheat shot, do you aim straight above/inline with the front leg or just behind the front leg? Also what cal do you normally use? Cheers
Hey mate. I've always been told when shooting Broadside to shoot slight behind the front leg. If you shoot a bit above or inline you run thr risk of hitting the shoulder blade and shattering it (making a mess) or even the bullet/bolt ricochet off it and just missing the vitals. I've always shot slightly behind am never had an issue. Lots of shots through thr vitals. But take it with a grain of salt. I'm no expert.
@@nolixss694 personally I hunt with a 30.06 for all deer species. But technically you can use a 243 for fallow deer. But I'd still go a 30.06 or a 308. You want to guarantee a kill and not just wound the animal.
@@nolixss694 you could, but it would be illegal in Victoria and NSW. Queensland I'm not sure about, I think the rules are more relaxed. The more important thing is that you shouldn't. When hunting deer you want to respect the animal and ensure a clean swift kill. A .223 would give you a clean kill. More then likely the shot would wound the deer and it would run off into the bush to die. Not only would you not find the deer (they could run for kilometres with a wound like that) but you'd waste its life. Best to hunt with a caliber that will drop it immediately.
How would you rank their meat for consumption? I have only hunted Whitetail and Sika, and rate Sika meat as the better of the two. Sika cooks up reddish to Whitetails brownish color. Sweeter meat too.
I can only comment on the deer I've eaten personally (Fallow, Sambar and Rusa). The fallow meat is lighter and has a more mild taste. Whereas both the Rusa ans Sambar is a heaver stronger taste. For me one isn't better then another, they are just different. For sausages I prefer the meaty bite of the Sambar. For steaks or crumbed meat I like the fallow. Great question, though. I'd be keen to taste some Sika and Whitetail if given the change! And well as some Reds, Chital and Hog deer here in Oz.
@@Thehuntsmanshow Thanks for the reply. I have been told similar things about Sambar. Most people I know claim Elk or Chital/Axis as the best meat. I suspect care and prep of the meat as important as the species though. A quick cleaning/butchering in a cold environment being best.
Hi Wan. I'm no deer expert but I have heard it said before that Sambar have been known on rare occasions to hybridise with Rusa deer and produce fertile offspring. Im not sure if this kind of inbreeding occurs betweeb other species. For the most part i believe each species keeps to its own.

Hi Shuan. Nice to meet ya:) Have you tried to use the More To Explore app? It shows allll the public hunting areas which you could check out . There is also a brand new app out on Android called Hunting Grounda which also shows game distribution which would be SUPER helpful for you I would think. With those two tools you should have everything you need to start finding new spots and scoping out some new areas. Then it's just about being patient and covering some country in exploration trips:) Let me know how you go mate. - Chris

They are just a rough guide unfortunately not a precise location. The only way your going get confirmation is by heading out to spots and seeing for yourself lol. The farmer idea is a great one though. It's a great way to hunt and build relationships. Good work mate.
Sadly they are all on farms :( we don't have any wild Sika. They were a bunch released in Gembrook (Victoria) in 1887 but it doesn't look like that population survived. However they are still formed in that region. It's also hard to tell because Sika were reported at that time to breed with Red deer. So maybe they felt no imperative to keep their genetics purr and just bread themselves out?

@@gerilla1025 ah that's cool :) Most of thr hunting in the Northern parts of Australia (northern Territory and Queensland) are big troohey hunts. Mostly Bentang and Buffalo. Then there is the Hunting on the east coast in NSW which is a mixture of deer, goat and pig. NSW also has public land hunting as well. And finally there is hunting in Victoria which I predominantly deer. Victoria also has a lot of public land hunting. Hope that helps give you an idea what's available 😀

Hey Brian. Thanks for reaching out mate. I'm literally working on a video now that's covers where you can hunt on public hand in Australia (SA included). It's tough for you guys given you can only hunt deer on private property in SA. My recommendation would be that you join the Farmer Assit program (google them and check out their website) and hopefully you can find some property owners who will let you on there land to control deer numbers. That's definitely your beat option. Hang in there mate.
Correct, but only in certain circumstances. Sometimes you will find s Sambar stag hanging around a hind and her fawn/yearling for a bit. But otherwise the stags tend to go solo.
Not sure where you got you information for fallow but they have more than 12 points I’ve got several of 16 points n up and my best to date is 28 points even on both sides

so im a butcher that has come across from england i have 135 acres a mixed land mainly bush land we have a lot of dig deer on our propery and just got my cat A&B lisence. what is a good caliber to use im currently looking at 6.5 grendel , .243, .223 im not after some thing over the top for my first gun i dont mind a bit of recoil can you or anyone help?
Hi Adam. First of all welcome to Australia:) & congratulations on the property. Concerning your question about calibre, it depends on what state your property is located in. If its Victoria there is a minimum calibre requirement for smaller deer (hog deer and fallow) which is .243. for the larger deer (sambar, red, rusa and chital) you have to use a calibre .270 or greater. You'll find most hunters choose either a .308 or 30.06. They are the most popular for a reason. They shoot well and are large enough to put down any deer. If you are based in NSW you'll need to read the DPI recommendations as they are slightly different. Either way, personally I'd choose a 30.06 :)

Rich your best bet is to join a club and get yourself an R-Licence then you can hunt deer in NSW state forest. There are bunch in southern NSW. Some of the best in the state in fact. In there you will find Fallow, Reds and even Sambar in some.
Fallow can be found all over the Victorian High Country East of Melbourne. Particularly in the fringe areas, towns like Mansfield. Reds are harder. There are only a few small pockets of Reds and their locations are guarded by those who know.
Yeah @Mark5Fish and I were just talking about them and how thr small numbers we do have are mostly breed in deer farms and there are fears that the recent fires may have wiped out the small amount that was left in the wild. Hi mate. That's a great question. There are always situations that bend the rule when the conditions are right (usually the availability of feed or sex). For instance I've seen small herds of Sambar (15+) who usually prefer to live in groups of 2-3, Mum and fawn, maybe trailing stag or spiker with them. So it really depends. Being from Victoria myself my exposure to Rusa in the wild has been pretty limited so I can't say for sure. Have you personally seen a group of 25 Rusa together? Is that's what has prompted your question?
Hey Joe. Thanks for reaching out mate. It really depends on what your looking to hunt. I'm assuming it's deer? In which case you'll want to get something that covers all species and sizes. I'd personally recommend getting a 30.06. It's a great deer rifle which can handle everything from a small hog deer all the way up to a Samber or Elk. In terms of a scope I think a 3-9x will give you the versatility of both close and far range 😀

I had my eye on Ruger American or Tikka T3x if budget can stretch but If I need a Scope it may be the Ruger. Do you think it will be big enough enough? Ps. @@joefussy11 that's for the sub Joe:) A .223 is a great rifle (I have one and love it)it's a really good all rounder but it won't do for Deer, at least not in Victoria. You'll need at least a .242 for small deer (fallow, hog and chital) or at least a .270 for large deer (Sambar, Rusa and Red) that's just the rules here. Outside of Victoria I'm not sure, but at least that gives you a guide. If your not hunting deer a .223 is perfect otherwise. Big enough for foxes, but cheap enough rounds for bunnies :)

Hi TJ. All of the weights and heights listed in this video are taken from surveys by external groups and represent ranges, not definitive values. You are correct Sambar can get over 350kg, however that isn't medium size. This video is designed to give people an idea of what they can expect in 'normal' situations, not the extremes. Regarding your other point there is a section in the video where the footage and voice over went out of sync and got mixed up in the editing process showing chital and talking about fallow. If you check in the description this is mentioned. Se excerpt take from the video description below. Originally? India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Vietnam, the Indonesian islands, Taiwan and Southern China i believe. But from memory they are also found now in parts of England where they are considered a pest. A cool, weird looking deer for sure!

Hey Charlie I’m a ex tweed heads resident . You only real option is to go do a paid property hunt . Or get your R license . And try the state forests . ( they are hard work). Research research and more research .get out and put the time in. It took me two years to bag my first deer . I’m a compound bow hunter . Hope this helps .

Hi Juandre there is a dmall wild deer population in WA but imtheir numbers are not as strong as the other states. Also you can shoot them unless they are on your property.

Great question Sam. I haven't eaten them all so I couldnt say. What I can say is that I prefer Sambar over Fallow. That's not to say one is better then the other, it's just my personal pallet preference:)

I get asked a lot of spots given I put myself out there and I've just learnt to push back a bit. I really only share spots with people I hunt with, who I am invested in and have a relationship with. That way I get to see for myself the growth and get blessed in return. I live state park hunting. 99% of my hunting is public land hunting. A lot of covering country and long walks with the rifle too haha. The Otways especially are hard. So thick, wild and difficult to hunt. Sorry again Adam if I offended. Was not my intention at all :)
Gday mate just wondering where abouts is the best place kinda ballarat area to hunt deer because i read somewhere that the brisbane rangers in victoria have the highest concentration of red deer in australia but not tottering sure on if you can hunt many of them around ballarat area?
Hi CM. Have you tried the Hunting Grounds app? It's a great way to find both public hunting areas and game distribution. I'd give that a try :) as for specific areas sorry but I can't be much if a help. Most of my hunting is done either thr west or east of Victoria. Good luck and let me know how you go!

Hahaha. Yes you are correct, WA has some deer, but the amount is significantly smaller then the other states, that I didn't add a pin. But yes, you are correct. WA has some deer :)
@@Thehuntsmanshow listen mate this is not a spam l used hunt pigs with the 44-40 and a .25/303. I was told l had to buy a 308 if l wanted to hunt deer. I’ve been hunting for over 50 years.
Ah sorry Neil! I didn't realise. Happy to answer your question. 308 is perfect for hunting any size deer. The other great option is a 30.06 which has a little extra punch. Both are great calibres
Hmmm, sorry I don't know. WA's deer population is the least I'm familiar with if all the states. I've been told that there are deer in WA, just in very small numbers. Best speak with a local WA hunter to find that answer.
