Great video! There's also Macquarie Island, but politically it is part of Tasmania and nobody permanently lives there, although there are some researchers.

Another fact about the Cocos (Keeling) Islands - in 1984 there was a referendum that decided the future of the island - whether the island should be integrated as an external territory of Australia or whether it should become a separate nation. The islanders decided to vote for integration as an external territory which leaves Cocos in the situation as it is now and finishes the final piece of that puzzle about the Cocos Islands.

+jereboy2005 Thanks! And yes, I do plan on making similar videos. I'll be covering every nation with external territories (already done the US and Australia). Probably going to work on the British video next. I'll keep the island nation idea in mind for the future.

Australia has 8 states and territories. Norfolk Island the one and only island of Australia that is self governing. Christmas Island is govern by the Christmas shire council, and Western Australia state law applies a long with Australia national law.

I am "the guy" and I did indeed just get it wrong. That is René Descartes, not sure why he came up when searching for Pieter Goos. Haven't been able to find a portrait of Goos to this day.

Australia actually has three internal territories, Jervis Bay Territory was given to the ACT so that it could have a port, but since 1989 has been it's own territory, although under the laws of the ACT. Just a technicality, but interesting nonetheless.

Why don't they standardize the name from "Cocos (Keeling)" to "Cocos-Keeling", to me the '(Keeling)' always seemed like an alternative name rather than part of the name of the island; what I mean by that is "Cocos" is the primary name but it also goes by "Keeling" and that's sort of true if one looks at its history.

I definitely agree with you there, it makes the island a bit of a mouthful to say as well. I'd be interested to see if the inhabitants of the island would want to change the name or keep it Cocos (Keeling).

The thumbnail is not all one flag, but rather three (Christmas Island, Norfolk Island, and the Cocos Keeling Islands). I just flipped them vertical to fit in a 16:9 ratio. I’d agree that they are rather ugly flags even when viewed individually, though.
