C'mon, Bobby! This is no bueno, man. Australia has a TOTALLY different economy, population and political/legislative structure that means a good portion of your comments are either a little off the mark, or are actually unfair. Not JUST by saying that Vegemite is "unhealthy". What the blarg???? Please tell me you've done SOME research on what Vegemite contains? On top of that, please tell me you have read the research that actually quite soundly debunks the "Soy = moobs" debate???? Australia has a population of 24 million. America is pushing 326 million. Australia's landmass is similar to that of the USA. The USA's population - and therefore economy - is more than 14 times that of Australia's. This means the demand for products, AND for range, is entirely different. Australia exports a LOT of produce because it's such high quality. It also grows, raises, or cultivates over 92% of our ENTIRE daily food supply. This means that people here AND overseas want our stuff. Of COURSE it's going to be of a different cost-to-weight ratio. Australian definitions of food statuses are also different to America's. "Free range" means literally that. "Barn Laid" means free range hens who are ushered into barns in the evenings. Please don't claim that hens kept at 15,000 per hectare (and look, guys, a hectare is a Metric measure. Do you truly understand how BIG a hectare is? TEN THOUSAND SQUARE METRES. It's not a paddock, mate) means they are not free range. Additionally, the quality of eggs is standardised across the board - we don't have "white" and "brown" eggs packaged separately, or "higher protein" or "lower carb" like America does. They're eggs. Laid naturally. As they should be. Australian MEAT is also of a generally higher standard. You want to know where your grass-fed Angus beef in Costco comes from? Right here, mate. New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia. AUSTRALIA. Additionally, "organic" vs "grass-fed" is another arbitraty comparison that is not reconcilable between products. Additionally - the timestamp wherein you and Vincenzo compare the COLOURS of the ground beef - come onnnnnnnnnnnnn. Are you for real? Packaged ground meat contains humectants and preservative products to keep the rich red colour. American meat is packaged PRECISELY the same way. The comments you're making about the colour difference between three different packages is incorrect and unfair. Meat is not naturally that colour when it is removed from an animal and treated. Please, this is amateur stuff, you should know better. Lastly, as eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeveryone else has stated, the Australian economic structure means that cost of living is entirely different here as it is there. Do Australians pay more for fresh produce, groceries and dry goods than you do in America? YES. Do Australians, overall, earn a higher wage across the entire economy than Americans? YES. Is unemployment and a lower socio-economic market a higher percentage of your economy than it is of ours? ABSOLUTELY. We pay more because we earn more. We live at a higher national average wage. We also have a higher national quality of living, and our capital cities are CONSISTENTLY in the top 20 of the Mercer Quality Of Living WORLDWIDE CITY SURVEY. This video made me so sad, Bobby. You're better than clickbait stats. Please, do Australia a little better justice.
Just something to note here: for the lower quality free range eggs in this video, the carton stated 10,000 hens per hectare, which is 1 hen per square meter, or 10.8 square feet per hen. Comparing that to the pasture raised standard in the US, each hen must have at least 108 square feet. So yes, free range in Australia is still significantly inferior to the pasture raised standard available in the US, as each hen can have up to 10x less space. The higher quality one they recommended was 1500 hens per hectare, which is 72 square feet per hen, which is still less space compared to pasture raised eggs in the US.
I live in Australia too and yes, like you said : our salaries are indeed quite high but it STILL does not excuse the insane price of groceries. Nowadays, you spend $50 at Coles or Woolies and you end up with barely anything in your trolley. The economy here in Straya Is different to the one in the US but it is mainly property-driven with mental sky-high property prices here. Australia is no longer the lucky country.
@@mumufried9083 I've been living in New Zealand for the last few years for work and let me tell you, Australia is a hell of a lot more lucky than you'd think. I understand what you mean, and I am not dismissing the cost of living increases and rental market influence, but I swear to you, hand on heart, it is leaps and bounds more affordable than even New Zealand - there's a reason why, for the last 12 months, more New Zealanders have LEFT this country [and, interestingly, moved to Australia as first-choice] than people have come to it. Well, more than one reason - many of them, in fact - but cost of living is one of the highest.
What a coincidence! I recently discovered Vincenzo's channel a month ago, when searching for Italian recipes. I really relish his enthusiasm for food. Thank you Bobby for giving him more exposure.
@@vtbn53 That is exactly right!! That's what I keep saying. Exchange rates have got NOTHING to do with anything. There are more factors than exchange rates to consider. It's not a simple equation. The only time exchange rates come in to the picture is if someone from the US is looking at purchasing products in Australia. Products are still cheaper in the US. A larger population, mass production and purchasing power, prices can be cheaper. In Australia prices are seriously jacked up by Coles and Woolworths supermarkets. They still somewhat have the monopoly. Which is why it is so important for more smaller retailers to rise up. We now have Costco and Aldi as have had IGA and many other smaller players for decades, but still we need more competitors to drive down the prices. Tesco is now trying to enter the Australian market it would seem....taking its first step via The Reject Shop. Coles and Woolies only care about shareholders not customers.
@@rick_terscale1111 Obviously economies of scale will make a difference, but it's the degree of the difference that proves it can't just be that, because we could leverage the economies of scale of other countries by importing directly from them, and, theoretically, then the only difference in cost would be shipping. Now it's difficult to factor in shipping as it is obviously different depending on the type of product, but it is not uncommon for the difference in price to be 5 to 10 times. That cannot possibly be attributed to shipping alone.
Have you ever lied even once, stolen anything, used God’s name in vain, looked with lust or worse sexual sins? Then you’re not a good person in God’s eyes and in terrible danger of the judgement of God which will send you to hell (a terrible place of pain and sadness FOREVER & EVER & EVER & EVER….). Remember God is the Holiest such that one small lie will induce his severe wrath. Good news is Jesus died on the cross so that you may receive forgiveness of AALL YOUR SINS (No matter how bad or how many). But you aren’t forgiven unless you REPENT OF YOUR SINS & BELIEVE IN JESUS AS YOUR GOD (repentance means turning from sin and doing your absolute best not to do it again, also ask Jesus to rid you of addictions that you’re struggling to shake away-James 4:7). God has blessed us with Great food to eat (kings in the past don’t eat like we do today), shelter, freedoms, fun, medicine, pets to enjoy their company, friends and many more things to enjoy. Yet we don’t give him thanks, Blaspheme his HOLY name etc God wants to give the free gift of eternal life (9999999999999999999999999… years) but we need to humble ourselves and turn from our wicked ways Believe in Jesus (God isn’t asking you to get religious he wants to have a relationship with you-like a father and his children). Think about why you’re reading this message (Everything happens for a reason) Get saved today since tomorrow is not promised (not everyone lives to 80+); Enter God’s rest; God is taking desperate measures to reach you all because the time is short. Thanks for reading this message & let me know if you have any questions. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xfLNcBeXKdY.html
Great information but let's get some balance.. 1. Australia has much higher wages and working conditions for the 'average' person. 2. Most, if not all of our dairy cattle are grass fed, not in feedlots. I'm sure labelling will catch up soon. 3. Vegemite is now owned by an American company and it is not to be spread like PB or Jam. Just a thin smear. Makes GREAT stock for soups and stews. 4. All sauces, relish and mayo types do better stored upside down. It seals the lid and doesn't allow mold to form on the product.
THANK YOU! I was so disappointed by SO many of Bobby's comments and assumptions, without giving context, OR mentioning economic, production, and even population differences to be taken into consideration!
@@hellototheworld What a load of rubbish!! Supply and demand.. The USA has over 10x our population so they can get better deals due to the sheer volume bought and sold. Higher prices in Australia but much better living conditions and a very reasonable health care and welfare system than the USA.. I'll take my high priced meat and live in Australia any day thanks!!
Tips for people in Australia, you can buy cheaper Organic pantry items on Vitacost for half the price you are paying now. All with a flat rate of 5.99 US shipping! This is what I have done for years now and have saved so much money on condiments, nut flours, and nut milks.
As an Aussie, your are right. Prices are vastly different from the US to here, not only on food but other items like clothes, cosmetics, electricals etc.. Thanks to you, I will be more mindful about the labels on products on my next visit to Coles.
you keep mentioning how expensive their food is, but don't take in consideration their dollar is NOT same as American dollar, when you exchange money , and average paycheck in Sydney is quite higher then average town here , what you are doing is comparing NY paycheck to small town in MS or Alabama , then ofcorse it would look expensive , totally unfair and uninformed comparison
Exactly!! 100% agreed. Higher minimum wages are going to caused other goods to go up in prices. USA (some states) have a very low minimum wage so cost of goods are going to be cheaper. I'm not going to compare prices in San Fran & NYC to Alabama or Minnesota. That's just ridiculous.
TOTAL ABOSOLUTE BULLSHIT!!!!! The average wage in Australia is lower than that in the US - Stop bullshitting just to make yourself feel better that Australia has the HIGHEST world.
The Choice website has a list of genuine free range egg brands which is helpful, and Woolworths homebrand butter comes from pasture raised New Zealand cows - just a cheeky heads up for my Aussie keto peeps.
Nice video, love Australia. The color of the beef has mostly to do with the fat content... What am I missing? You’re comparing color like it equates to quality. Yes, discolored beef isn’t good. But, how pink/white it is? That’s to do with fat content. Also, $13 USD is over $18 AUD. Their lamb is still cheaper than at Costco. Thanks
So glad you made it to a Sydney and saw our grocery stores. Very informative. Don't forget we have the USD to AUD exchange and our minimum wage is higher than the US. I hope you had a great time here in Sydney. Ps Vegemite is the best, we are all grown up on it. You spread it lightly on your toast, not a thick layer like you would for peanut butter
Nice to meet Vincenzo for the first time. I will definitely check out his channel. It sucks veggies like celery, cauliflower and spinach are so expensive at this store. I wonder what is the average of Australians gardening(vegetable)? Celery, cauliflower, leafy greens are very easy to grow on your own(especially leafy greens). You can grow in pots, windowboxes and planters like "earthboxes" or "smart pots" for relatively inexpensive. I started this way and I was amazed how easy it was. Lettuces and leafy greens home grown are so much more tastier and you can grown organically.
Hey Bobby, you should do a video on seasoning cast iron. Most people reccomend using canola oil or Crisco to do it but is that really healthy? How do you season yours?
I know! And I can't find it in our Costco either (we only have 1 Costco in Adelaide!) Thank you for putting out all your videos! Gaining so much info from them 😄👍
$7 a block of Kerrygold is hella expensive. In Las Vegas wal-mart it's $2.99 A block or at Costco $8.99 for three block. But then again, Australia have a higher minimum wage than Vegas. So it make sense that all your things would be more expensive. In the end, it evens out.
I just started watching Vincenzo's channel, Vincenzo's Plate. LOL....it's funny. I like the one where he lists the Italian foods that your never cook or give to an Italian (LOL). I feel bad for Art, Bobby. While you are in Australia scoping out their best ingredients, from Kangaroo meat to honey, Art is stuck in the Windy City drinking Almond Milk, which he says is not milk (LOL).
I remember many years ago a lovely elderly italian lady stopped me in the supermarket when I was buying mince and she recommended the cheaper mince because it has more fat and will be much tastier. Good info. Also, as grass fed fat is actually good for you I have taken her advice ever since.
This is very insightful. I'm probably like majority of people out there who don't actually stop and read labels... From now on i'm going to make that a priority :)
Hi, writing from Aus here. We have Rice cooking spray at coles that has no butane or propellant. It's about $6 for a can. It is the only non propellant spray I've seen. I got some about 3 months ago after watching your oil video. I found it in Coles in the oil section.
So cool to see a video of you in such familiar surroundings! Would have been good to see a Woolies one as well, maybe next time. Also vegemite is delicious, I love it on sourdough with butter and smashed avo on top - so good! But you have to have grown up eating it. Most of us had vegemite and cheese sandwiches every day for lunch in primary school so we’re used to the taste :)
Bobby, I made your scrambled egg recipe this morning for Sunday breakfast. Holy Cow dude! The best eggs I’ve ever had in my life. Better than any restaurant. Thank you
I've watched your videos and have got into that habit of looking at the ingredients and origin of where the product comes from. I decided to get the exact same almond milk with your tips before this video came out. Thank you for opening my eyes to shopping and eating smarter.
Bobby is right though. Coles and Woolies seriously jack up their prices. That's why it pays to shop around. It's not just in the US where you can get goods at cheaper prices. I've traveled all over the world and found similar branded items that are waaay cheaper. It's one of the reason why so many Aussies, from Perth to Melbourne, do huge shopping trips to Bali, Indonesia. What people don't realise is that they're paying a FORTUNE for some items in Coles. Some prices are insane. When things are on special, stock up then. Coles and Woolies had the monopoly for many years. There are many other grocery retailers with more reasonable prices these days.
He is the best. I learn so much from you. I went to Sydney once, shopped at Coles and loved Sydney. Enjoy your time. Canadian prices are pretty bad also.
Great video Bobby and Big Vinnie. Yes, we get screwed with the lamb, actually, $32.50 is not the most expensive we have to pay. Regarding the price of produce, those prices are pretty much what I pay in Adelaide, with some upmarket fruit stores charging more. Finally, I love vegemite and have eaten it all my life, it's a major staple down here. P.S., see how you go cooking some Roo steaks.
Omg 😛 you were in Australia, I wish you would come back & do the difference between whole cheese & processed cheese, like you did in your home state, we are always ripped off here in Australia, I wish Walmart would come to Australia 😢
It's OK, Bobby doesn't know what the hell he's talking about. He hasn't factored in to the different economics of Australia vs USA. The Australian workforce is higher paid and food safety and quality is high.
We are getting ripped off because Australians are dumb 🤷♀️ no one questions the constant price hikes or the 27Mil profit Coles makes from a basic human right to freaking Eat the same way no one can afford to buy houses in Sydney because we capitalized on another basic human need housing. Capitalism is the devil
The celery price has shot up in recent months because of the craze for celery juice - I’ve seen yoga mums at the Adelaide market buying up a dozen bunches of celery at a time. It’s bonkers.
Hope you had time do Aldi and WWLS in Melbourne 😄 I think Australia only had two main super markets, Aldi is the third raising star, that may explain why we are so expensive or maybe the pay of regulation for farms and organisations are different, we are expensive to live...
Bobby, I bought the other day Hummus that's canned and doesn't have any oils added ( so you can add whatever you want) at the middle eastern section at walmart and it was $1.56 (and that's Canadian dollar)
Yes things cost more but wages, even supermarket workers, are much higher in Australia versus USA. And Australian fruit and vegetables are a higher quality. Markets have better prices as Coles is higher prices. Make your own hummus. Macadamia oil is the best for mens health.
@@BobbyParrish My fiance is from Melbourne Victoria, vincenzo and he's wife are adorable couple I watched so many of their videos. Bobby did your wife already have the baby? If not I wish you both a healthy baby and many blessings.
Sydney is expensive- if you want to eat healthy and clean it will cost you most of your wage. We’re so use to the prices here but whenever family visit from overseas they are shocked by the amount of money we pay for food.
As I understand it if the meat says organic in Australia it will always be grass fed. Unfortunately Coles doesn’t stock a lot of organic items which is why I shop at Woolworths and local organic shops.
The ONLY reason theor groceries are so expensive is because third minimum wage starts at $16 an hour ...so their currency compare to US is higher , THATS WHY!
Hi Bobby/Dessi, I am excited and ordered through Amazon your cookbook. I wanted to see if it’s possible to get both of your autographs? I lived in MD, Please let me know? Or Maybe a book tour in the future?
I grew up in the 50's and 60's, and Peanut Butter we had back then we alway had to keep it turned upside down, otherwise there would be about a half inch of oil on top of the Peanut butter, so we just kept it upside down. Then they started putting an emulsifier in Peanut butter and we no longer had to turn it upside down.
The prices change all the time on our fruit and vegetables in Australia depending on availability tomatoes could be $2.50/kg then go up to $9/kg so when they are expensive I go to the local fruit and vegetable market which is always cheap
Did you see Thomas Farms. I found it here and it is Grass Fed Beef. I looked it up and it looked like to me it is Grass Fed, Grass finished even if it did not say so on the package, Did you see that in Australia?
Meats are often but not always dyed to make the product more appealing. The fluid one finds in meat trays is not blood but dye and or a protein called myoglobin. Chicken farming is much more complicated than your notion of birds running about eating bugs and worms. You should read about the dirty requirements of these animals before you go tooting your trumpet.
My god, thank you so much! After inspired by your oil video, I actually bought the macadamia oil before this video. I was really amazed the free range egg is different definitions between 2 countries.. I will find out the free range egg brand you mentioned in video next time, but how about the organic free range? Which one is better?
My opinion on the hummus is don’t buy any of it at all. Make it at home and you know exactly what goes into it. If you have a food processor it’s a no braver fellas. It takes less than 5 minutes to make🦋💜
