I'm 39 years old and came to study an MBA in Australia considering the job experience i could gain here. That was one of the main reasons for me and my family to make such a difficult decision. I feel betrayed. You can't change the rules in the middle of the game. I think age discrimination is also discrimination😒. Thank you, Karl, for giving us the voice we needed

Non sensical as well, at 39 with a MBA and experience in your choose field you would be a valuable asset to Australia. I would understand if people were 70 nearing retirement but you could still be working another 30 years, I think we will look back at this one day as a prejudice government that is deflecting the real issues from themselves such as them owning several rental properties and being the biggest contributors to the rental crisis.

A lot of current students already suffer from this unexpected situation and hopefully awaiting a fair consideration because some of them have changed their careers and do not have prior experience. Hi Karl, where can we complain about Trades Recognition Australia. I called today to know about the times to get the JRP done. They said that the whole process is going to take 16-18 months!!!! How can it be? When you study a trade you get 18 months of graduate visa. They told me that if we don’t have enough time we can call the department of home affairs. TRA is so negligent, every other month they modified the processing times to make it longer and longer.

Thank you Mr. Karl for updates. Most especially on 485 visa. I believe the government should scrap this age thing. International students contribute to the economy of australia because they work. Anyone who wants to be educated no matter what his age is should be given the opportunity to do so. What happens to those international students who currently doing masters degree and with theirs families and given up everything to start life here. Please Minister have a heart to retain the age 50 for temporary graduate visa

10:04 I think it’s equally important to know the average time of receiving an invitation after an EOI is submitted as it gives a better picture of total time whether it improving, stagnant, or declining
@estellebright2579
@estellebright2579 4 месяца назад
There are so many factors involved to influence when your EOI will be considered and receive an invite, such as pandemic, planning levels, government policy changes (such 2023-2024 FY), domestic issues and so on. Obviously the quality of EOI itself and applicant competitiveness also plays a huge role. Looking back, it surely was a good time pre-pandemic (2019 and before) when regular-ish invites were still issued and people still could project their likelihood somewhat by looking at historical data. Not so much nowadays. TLDR, it is just too impractical to give an “average time” of receiving invitation. States such as NSW doesn’t even tell us when they will issue invites, making it impossible to predict, and fittingly they don’t care when your EOI is submitted when issuing invites (me received mine after 12 days of submitting my EOI).
@estellebright2579
@estellebright2579 4 месяца назад
Oh if your occupation is in high demand, invitation would probably be issued very quickly. So that’s another factor to consider.

Another ridiculous piece of the 485 puzzle: I received a scholarship to do my PhD here in Australia. That scholarship was paid for by the Australian government and was worth over $100,000. Now, at 36 and about to graduate, I will essentially be a 'stranded asset' to the government because they are eliminating my opportunity to stay and get a return on their investment.

Thanks Karl, Really appreciate your concern for the those affected. I am sure the department will relent to our just and fair demands. But time is running out and patience too. the proposed strategy was published in Dec 2023. We are in Feb 2024 and many students like me are still not sure where and when this is going to end. Is it not reasonable to expect that our concerns are addressed by end of Feb? Even if the timeline for implementation be mid-year, providing clarity on the transition arrangement should be paramount and is needed today. Many students have to arrange for their own fee and the truth shouldn't be kept away from us by the relevant authorities any further.

I worked in the Department of Education for four years. You’ll be surprised how disconnected the departments of immigration, labour and education are. Most of the managers & employees in the education department know nothing about student visas, immigration rules and updates. Nor do they know about working rights or visa status. Only when a case comes to these employees, they research the case and then find out what the updates are.

Visa is not a product in traditional sense, like food or smartphone. Behind every visa is one’s livelihood or an entire family’s. Me personally has been treated generally fairly and enjoyed quick turnover for some of my key visas (my first higher education sector student visa got granted in 2 days and 7 days for COVID visa), but government should be able to do the same for all applicants and do not exercise discrimination. Section 39 that enables DOHA to dispose of application due to capping and ceasing should be repealed, so this whole 476 drama would never happen again. Yes, there will be conversion of visas and/or transitional arrangements, but people with lawful visa status should not be throw out like trash whenever DOHA sees fit.

It's quite ironic how the government has imposed restrictions on students' working hours, especially in fields like IT where round-the-clock availability is often necessary. Yet, they also emphasize the importance of gaining experience. Unfortunately, only industries like retail seem willing to hire students, leaving many international students on 485 visas struggling. It's disheartening to see so many vacant houses while students face such challenges. Thank you for advocating for students' rights; your support means a lot, especially to those like my brother who are affected by these policies.

485 for early career professionals who can contribute to the Australian economy over a longer period........ WTF??? It doesn't matter how old you are if you can stay ONLY specific time. Doesn't matter if you are 20 or 50, you can work only time that is given by visa condition. Important is that any age person will work the same time, but life and work experience of older students are better for economy and employer. That statement from emigration page 100% doesn't make any sense....

Hang on…. PhD graduates (at least those from Victoria) have no pathway to permanency? That’s really generous of the government/universities to have invested $100k+ on each international PhD student on a scholarship without expecting them to contribute to the skilled workforce once they graduate. It’s either that, or apparently PhDs are unskilled 🤷🏻‍♂️

@@ailsaustralia Unfortunately, they don't provide any sponsorship in Victoria. I'm a PhD graduate in civil engineering with over 100 points and a civil engineer job. They invite any other people even without a job in state nomination. It's not fair that I don't have the chance to get invited.

@@tomliu7272 same here - IT PhD with overseas work experience, the required points, and a job in my field as well. What I don’t have is a positive skills assessment because I don’t have payslips and bank statements from 10 years ago to prove I have the experience. It’s funny that I (at least according to the assessing body) have no skills despite having published several papers and a doctoral degree. Good luck doing all that with no skills 🤷🏻‍♂️

Hi Karl! My 485 visa expires in December this year and I won’t meet the 2 year experience mark by then. What are the options for people like me? It usually takes a couple months to find full time employment after graduating so I imagine a lot of other people on the visa don’t meet the 2 year mark either after they slashed the extensions. Thanks in advance!

Hi Karl, thank you for the information given. I have a question about my visa. My current 485 expires on july 2024. I have applied for the extension on dec 2023. But hasn’t been granted yet. Can these new rules possibly affect granting my 485 extension. My agent told me it can take upto 2 months. But I’m getting nervous because I planned everything according to this extension. Also I haven’t done my medical yet. Do you think I should do it to make the process faster? I really appreciate your advice on this Thanks Carl!!

Hi Karl, it's a weird question to ask as I keep whinging in the comments. But is there any chance to stay in Australia based on my situation? I'm happy to go through the process with your agency. Accounting Graduate, working in my field with a years worth experience (tax accountant). But my visa expires in october and as far as I know the 485 extension doesn't apply to accountants. There's a lot of noise regarding the 485 visa (and rightly so) but what about those who already have the visa - and are already in the required profession. How am I supposed to search for a job, get the job, and get the 2 years work experience within 2 years. Am I expected to leave the country, work for my employer from overseas for 5 months and then come back? 😂

I don't understand why PhD students are being talked about negatively. We are the most genuine students anyone can find, having been in school the longest by sheer love of knowledge. I also hope academia and the immigration department can talk to each other. Our unis are teaching us to be prepared to get jobs in industry if things don't work out in academia - So working in industry does not mean that we have downgraded or that wr are working beneath our qualifications 🤷‍♀️
