The Battle of the Alamo really set the lore of Texas in stone. Davey Crockett, Jim Bowie, and William Travis, among others, are major historical figures in American and Texas history that died fighting to preserve the Alamo.

Fun fact: until recently (relatively speaking) the drummer/singer for Genesis, Phil Collins, had the largest collection of Alamo artifacts outside the Alamo itself. Through the rest of March, and into April, the Mexican army continued to press its offensive against the Anglo settlers, but was eventually routed at the Battle of San Jacinto. A couple of days after that battle Santa Ana was captured by Texan forces. Eventually he surrendered on behalf of the Mexican state and signed the Treaties of Velasco . The northern border of Mexico was fixed by those treaties at the Rio Grande, the southern border of what would become the republic of Texas.

So to clarify the alamo you saw was the church, originally it was just to supposed to be a mission for the Catholic Church so it wasnt really built in mind to be a fort, but was later rebuilt as one during the start of the revolution. Theres a 2004 movie called “the Alamo” its very long but very good and historical accurate, but after the alamo a man named Sam Houston was named supreme commander of all Texan forces and began to retreat east drawing in santa annas army, santa anna would split his army up to chase the texans leading to the battle of San Jacinto, were 900+ texans would defeat 700 strong Mexican army in 18 minutes leading to the capture of santa anna who would surrender texas for his life. Now before the battle and after the alamo, the battles around goliad lead to 435-445 texans being taken prisoner and later they were massacred with only 28-30 men being spared or faking death to escape, couple with the death of the alamos defenders this lead Sam Houston to proclaim “Remember the Alamo! Remember Goliad!” Before and during the battle of San Jacinto.

A couple of things to share that are based on growing up in TX: 1) Texas history is a required part of the K-12 education curriculum (can't remember if it was middle school or high school). 2) Besides being on the southern border of the U.S. the fact that Texas once was part of Mexico is why we have such a high Hispanic population (see the city of San Antonio for example). 3) After leaving Mexico but before becoming a state in the USA, Texas was an independent country.

An what we know as Texas would be mexico instead. An keep in mind at the time texas had no support from united states cause it was a country of its own at the time

Yeah, the number of Mexican soldiers killed or wounded was significantly higher in most of the records. Santa Anna claimed it was around 500 killed, other Mexican officers at the time in personal letters talked about the numbers being closer to 900 to 1200 killed with a high number of wounded as well. A true Pyrrhic victory for Santa Anna. He took the fort, yes, but severely damaged his army to do it and also his massacre of the captured wounded Texans after the Alamo battle as well as the slaughter of all Texans at Goliad, a fort he took a few days later which surrendered to him without a fight in exchange for a pledge of mercy for the soldiers there, told every Texan it was win or die. Which had the opposite effect of what Santa Anna wanted, which was Texans to flee into Louisiana. Instead they retreated into the swamps around San Jacinto, where the Texans would launch a surprise attack on Santa Anna's divided forces and capture the Mexican dictator as well as either kill, wound and or capture the entire Mexican force with him which was about 1,300 soldiers at the time. Several other Mexican generals had smaller forces spread out in the region trying to pin down the Texan army. But when Santa Anna was captured these generals mostly withdrew towards Mexico. Which effectively ended the first stage of the Independence of Texas from Mexico.

after words the mexican army began trying to capture sam houston and his army he lead them on a chase all over the state with small skirmishes and houston recruiting more men. on April 21, 1836 houston engaged the mexican army at The Battle of San Jacinto. the texans took the mexicans by total surprise and won the battle in under 20 mins. santa anna was wounded and fled and later captured and brought before sam houston where he was forced to sign a treaty ending the war and making texas an independent country. in 1845 texas became the 28th state of the US.

The most recent film about the Alamo is by far the best ever made. It shows what most likely really happened and how the defenders felt and acted - knowing there would be no reinforcements and that Santa Anna's red flag signified No Quarter. They know doubt started out brave and defiant but were there to hold until reinforcements could arrive - not to die to the last man. In my imagination, I think the fight was one of desperation rather than proud defiance. The 13 days were not days of constant fighting. Santa Anna was awaiting his reinforcements and positioning his troops to prevent any escape for the doomed defenders. When the final assault came on Day 13, it was over in a couple of hours.

The numbers & detail are questioned many times. This video is probably closer than most. Some of the Mexican officer's wrote accurately but then not about some later event (Tequila?). Mexican forces would have an advanced guard to lay seige of a few hundred men. With a few hundred more arriving every day. Numbers range from 1500 to 5000 (it really is in doubt). TN volunteers would have arrived a few days before the battle & probably second guessed themselves. But they stayed. The song 'The Yellow Rose of Texas' sings the praise of the heroine that brought (or helped bring) Santa Ana down. Again . . . A lot of legend but the bulk of the story may be true.

There have been 3 major movies made on this event. My favorite, and the most historically accurate of the 3, is 2004's The Alamo with Patrick Wilson, Dennis Quaid and Billy Bob Thornton. Also that 500 Mexican casualty figure is debatable.

One of the major factors that this retelling (and most retellings) of the Alamo ignore is that in 1829, Mexico officially abolished slavery. However, the American colonists wanted to make certain that slavery was allowed since cotton was the primary crop they were growing when moving to Texas. For several years, representatives of the colonists worked on getting exceptions in Texas. When those negotiations started to break down, the idea of revolution began to spread.

Yee haw been to the Alamo many times, it's sobering. The Battle of the Alamo was what we today would be called a P.R. victory. Additionally the battle which should have taken a day or two stretched out for so long, that it set Santa Anna back giving the Texans time to regroup and prepare. There is a mini series made by the History Channel called Texas Rising which though takes many poetic liberties is mostly accurate, and is very entertaining as well as educational.

Unlike portrayed on TV and movies, the entire Mexican army snuck right up to the walls at night. Travis on guard duty that night was standing right above them and didn't know it until the Mexicans saw a glimpse of Santa Anna and starting cheering him. Travis looked over and was shot thru the forehead making him the first casualty of the final battle. The Mexicans simply scaled the walls with ladders and overran the defenders.

The rest of the story, if memory serves, goes that as more volunteers showed up , they put the Mexican army on the rout back to Mexico. The volunteers eventually found General De Santa Anna hiding in a water well. They pulled him out and executed him. Remember the Alamo!!!

The Alamo fell on March 6, 1836. What is not said in the video is that the Texicans didn't spike their cannons so they got used on them once they retreated to the barracks. From there, Santa Anna then chased Sam Houston down toward Galveston Texas area where he split his army. Santa Anna's group camped next to the texican army down by the mouth of Buffalo Bayou and the San Jacinto River. They were only about 500 yards apart. Santa Anna had about 1200 men but many of these were ill and exhausted from a long march, the Texicans had just shy of 800 men. How the battle of San Jacinto started is open to debate, but it appears it started by just some hot heads on the Texas side and then quickly escalated into full fledged battle and then a panic among the Mexican army leading to disaster for them. Santa Anna was captured and forced to sign a peace treaty. There was much debate over where exactly the border between the two was located. This got settled when the US decided to annex Texas and a little later went to war with Mexico. Shortly after the Battle of San Jacinto, the Comanche raided and took Fort Parker which has some later significance in Comanche/Texas history. Oh I left out, the Battle of San Jacinto was on April 21, 1836.

Texans will never forget the sacrifice paid with the blood of the defenders of the Alamo in 1836. The narrative story you watched explained the Alamo commander, Lt. Col. William Travis, called for aid from Col. Fannin's Texan army, aid that never came. The letter sent by Travis still exists today and is enshrined at the Alamo for all to see. It shows the character of Travis and the others who fought for liberty from Mexico. Here is that letter: Commandancy of the The Alamo Bejar, Feby. 24th. 1836 To the People of Texas & All Americans in the World- Fellow Citizens & compatriots- I am besieged, by a thousand or more of the Mexicans under Santa Anna - I have sustained a continual Bombardment & cannonade for 24 hours & have not lost a man - The enemy has demanded a surrender at discretion, otherwise, the garrison are to be put to the sword, if the fort is taken - I have answered the demand with a cannon shot, & our flag still waves proudly from the walls - I shall never surrender or retreat. Then, I call on you in the name of Liberty, of patriotism & everything dear to the American character, to come to our aid, with all dispatch - The enemy is receiving reinforcements daily & will no doubt increase to three or four thousand in four or five days. If this call is neglected, I am determined to sustain myself as long as possible & die like a soldier who never forgets what is due to his own honor & that of his country - Victory or Death. William Barret Travis. Lt. Col. comdt. P. S. The Lord is on our side - When the enemy appeared in sight we had not three bushels of corn - We have since found in deserted houses 80 or 90 bushels and got into the walls 20 or 30 head of Beeves.

Definitely a tale of bravery, but you should know what, in part, they were fighting for: "The 1836 battle for the Alamo is remembered as a David vs. Goliath story. A band of badly outnumbered Texans fought against oppression by the Mexican dictator Santa Anna, holding off the siege long enough for Sam Houston to move the main rebel force east and providing them a rallying cry at the Battle of San Jacinto. As almost any Texan will tell you, their heroic sacrifice turned the Alamo into the cradle of Texas liberty. American presidents have even invoked the Alamo myth to inspire their citizens in battles of all kinds, from Lyndon B. Johnson during the Vietnam War to then-candidate George W. Bush, who read William Travis’s iconic “Victory or Death!” letter to inspire the U.S. team to win the 1999 Ryder Cup. And in his last State of the Union address, Donald Trump, perhaps inspiring Americans to an internal battle, referenced “Texas patriots [who] made their last stand at the Alamo. The beautiful, beautiful Alamo.” Yet, the legend of the Alamo is a Texas tall tale run amok. The actual story is one of White American immigrants to Texas revolting in large part over Mexican attempts to end slavery. Far from heroically fighting for a noble cause, they fought to defend the most odious of practices. Our newfound understanding of this history presents Americans with a long-overlooked opportunity to correct a racist myth surrounding this monument."
