Australian Professors React to India's Toughest Exam 

I went to graduate school at MIT in the USA to study engineering. Quite a high percentage of fellow graduate students were from India. I asked them (perhaps patronizingly) if they were the very best students in India. One of them replied (and I still wonder if they were joking with me) that they came to MIT because they had failed to get into IIT.

They make exams like this for a bright India .. Le Indians :- studying hard to leave India

Students be like • Before the exam: "I have to solve everything in this world, learn every formula and have to know every angle from which I can solve a problem." • After passing the exam some years later (when the student see the question again): "Did I solve this kind of outrageous problems?-I might have been a genius "

Fun fact - i graduated from IIT DELHI(cleared jee advanced with AIR 121 in 2016) years ago and let me inform you all even I agree on the fact that our education system is not good , it focus on the kids with good memory power rather than the one's who are real genius .... Even after I studied 14 - 16 hours a day and even cleared the examination i was still not satisfied enough cuz we had to study more after getting in college...

I wanted to join iit as a kid but luckily i lost interest midway and settled as a happy farmer.

My dad went to IIT. He told me one of the greatest accomplishments in his life was coming from a small village and getting into the same school as people with millions of rupees, who had access to so much more.

India has so much raw talent but the political, social and economic instability in the country has neutralised it to null.

I always wanted to be in an IIT. it was like a dream for me since childhood. for those who says it's difficult. i studied 4 hours everyday. and today i m in IIT working as a librarian. nothing is impossible.. oh yeah !! i didn't clear the exam !!!

I got 59 out of 360 in JEE mains. Yeah, of course i failed.

India is a living example of the fact that difficult exams don't necessarily create good quality professionals.

Professor Barry Hughes, the elderly Mathematician, spoke so clearly with such patience. Must have been a treat to attend his lectures. Anyway, he had such a well-balanced review of the exam. It's important to understand the concepts beyond just the need for competitive exams. You lose out a lot in the real world otherwise.

It's not just the IITs, you should look at those graduating from IIScs, I hear getting into them is one level while getting out of them with a degree is at an entirely different level. Actually more IISc graduates stay on in India than IIT graduates, and these are the people who spearhead India's space and defence research.

I felt the same way about "coaching centres" and self studied relying heavily on understanding than being "fast" and scored a rank in 5000s. Then went for 1 year of coaching and in the next and final attempt got a rank of 500s in 2009. Generalizing coaching centers is also not a great thought! I was lucky enough to have attended a coaching center that placed equal emphasis on learning as getting things done quickly. It's important for students to "want" to understand things. As someone who has cleared this exam twice, I can confidently say you don't clear this exam if you don't understand the concepts well and are just "fast". The infrastructure of coaching centers is bad, yes, but the exams are so demanding you got to at least attempt some test series to know where you stand, which is hard to gauge if you are self-studying. Just my 2 cents!

I would leave India after my engineering(non IIT) because India has some top level engineers who scored lesser marks than me but still got into IIT because of there caste.....

6:54 are the golden words ...Indians are trained to be competitive and stressed minded...our study pattern don't give us chances to be creative. It's all about who can beat whom in terms of memory power and pattern learning questions... There is no value for Imaginative minds, which really matters for true learning of a subject and discoveries or inventions

This was the topic that I argued for an hour to my parents and which I've been trying to convince most people since I've noticed the major fail in system. Not to offend anyone but entrance exam (all which I attented) is mainly focused on how much you can memories. Not entrance but all exam so far I've attended (including school to uni(live)). . But the thing that amaze me is that the authority never cares. Don't revise until it's been "extremely" outdated. (I can't talk more, detaling why since politics is involved.) But if you are luckey enough to have a sufficient memory you can get to the toppest without skill, just some basic logic is required though.

Many ppl actually pop off in these somehow. It's amazing how India has so much potential as a country of aspirants. The youth has so much potential. It's the political environment pulling it down I would assume.

JEE exam is a filtration process, rejection process more than a selection process...

They should have hired a couple of experts from the comment section below. They seem to know more than these highly qualified professionals.

The truth, these tests were not designed for selection but to reject. Because if you know about India (if you guessed it right) over Population. The seats as resource were and still are very limited. You would be surprised there are institutions meant to coach to clear these exams and in these institutions you learn the tricks not the subject matter itself. And that’s not just with Engineering and technical field, this is for every field. If they cream out the ones from the top cream pool , they maintain their value, and that value for the institutions brings fundings and grants for them which in turns also helps them to maintain that position among others in the competitive list. That’s how these exams were designed to specifically serve these purpose when it comes to Indian education system.

As an IITian, studying in both IIT and MIT, education in MIT is far far better than in IIT irrespective of entrance exams.

Well I have my JEE exam in 12 days. I’m so tensed for my performance and Was watching YT to help it. And I felt somewhere preparing for JEE I lost the passion and happiness I had doing Physics and Mathematics in and before 10th std. and it’s like I’m being moulded into being a semi-skilled high pay labour than being someone who’d contribute to science the way Einstein,Dirac, Feynman and hawking did. It’s a matter of prestige in India to get into IIT and is wrecking so many talents of India. Just wanted to share my burden of heart.

I like what the old guy pointed out. Testing maths knowledge using multiple choice exams is no smart (even fair) way to test someone’s capabilities to reason scientifically. Morocco and France will always be masters of pure mathematics( and also applied maths).

Funny fact: I am in IIT Delhi BUT I still don't like my college as I have no time left to do other things I like and the pressure of poor grades still perceives and troubles me nights before the exams...

I agree with the points put forward by the respected professor about indian education system but at the same time it should be kept in mind that competition in India is far far more that in Australia so the toughness and pattern of the exam is valid in my opinion.

I have been in the IT industry for 30+ Years and had the privilege with working with an IIT alumni who was very smart. The difference between him and me is, he had solid grasp of subject and kept things absolute simple!

How to solve jee adv question 1-Read the question 2- cry

one thing i am coming on par with while preparing for the jee advanced is that you need to have a certain perspective to solve the questions. Yes, they require grade 12 knowledge at its best too but the way they are meant to be attempted is actually the tricky part. You can mug up the formulas and concept but to get through the questions you need to have the certain way of thinking , the way it was meant to be attempted. Its actually interesting but hard too at the same time so yes mixed feelings haha.

Nobody seems to have watched this video till the end. Half the people are comparing JEE with UPSC others are arguing how JEE is superior. The professor in the end and also the one on skype is explaining why JEE kind of exams do not prepare students for real world and this was the case in England decades ago and they removed these sort of examinations. It's worrying that people are celebrating the toughness of JEE rather than looking at the truth.

I agree with all of the professors . The exam is not very appropriate for selecting students for engineering and science programs. But the population of India is so high that there is no other way. If you look at old IITJEE papers that used to be subjective then you might find them more appropriate but at that time the number of students giving that exam was very less. Also JEE is only to differentiate hard working students who can withstand the immense pressure of not only its exam but also its preparation , from others

This is the exact reason why india doesn't produce good scientists, but a lot of engineers. You need a masters degree and phd to excel in a subject and do better. You cant do it in 2 yrs. These kinds of exams keep indians behind in terms of research and development . Dr Shane Huntington explained very well the weakness of such education system.

They teach so much extra stuff that can be very helpful but by doing the extra stuffs, a lot of creativity is taken away from others. Nothing can grow without new ideas and that's what is needed to be identified by the education system

I am from IIT and I think the analysis is spot on, especially by the old math professor with the moustach (I wish I knew his name). JEE exam pattern is biased towards students who are "smart", have access to exam training and perform well under pressure, and not necessarily those who have high scientific creativity or aptitude. This is very much evident by the fact that IIT's produce very little quality research ( IISC's fare a lot better here), but it produces a lot of good business leaders and entrepreneurs.

Barry Hughes is the most professory professor that ever professed. He has that look nailed down.

Also the questions are totally unpredictable , and by that I mean they rarely repeat the questions every year🧐

Just like in my country. Students practice 1000 times of similar problems before taking the real exam. They just remember the way to solve it. Nothing special.

Why in the world people are comparing upsc which is given by candidates aging 22+ (generally) with an exam which is given by (16-20) year olds??

I agree. The Indian education system teaches us to become a good follower of the processes instead of focusing on becoming a great formulator of the process. That's why we feel proud in bragging about some of the Indian CEOs who manage some of the top 500 Global companies but there's difference in owning the company and managing it.

Even these professors can't, many Indian students cracked it.
