I like how the Professor at 1:30 flat out just said "Yeah, that was a rough year for me". I applaud him for being transparent, and acknowledging that he had some unfortunate things behind the scenes affecting him. I think that what some people don't realize is that it's incredibly hard to appeal to every student that you teach, and leaving them informed with lectures every single day is extremely difficult if you get even the slightest bit distracted.

I’ve found that science professors typically are always super friendly (maybe because they constantly have to work with many other professors given the complex and intertwined nature of science so regularly have the same experience as students of having to learn a new high level concept from a professor giving them a lot more empathy and understanding for students) whereas social studies and fields like that where a professor can do a lot of work with minimal input from other professors can become much more prideful and condescending. An example would be that a history professor could specialise in a specific war and would not really need input from other history specialists beyond papers and research whereas a biology professor specialising in a specific protein still needs input from biochem, physics, statistics and computer science specialists to get a clear picture of the topic and perform experiments with advanced equipment. Obviously, pretty much all professors should have a deep passion for what they research and the main differentiator between a good and a bad professor is typically if they teach because they want to spread their passion or if they teach because the university/college requires it in exchange for using the university’s facilities and resources. I think its really obvious even with only a few classes to tell if a professor is the former or the latter.

@@archlifts947 I didn't say that. I was sharing my opinion based on his behavior. Maybe I didn't make that clear, that's my fault. I believe that teachers who can't take criticism or are unwilling to admit where they need to grow aren't good teachers. For instance, Richard Loomis and Megan Daschbach read multiple less-than-favorable reviews, but they're both still able to admit where they may have struggled because they know they aren't always right or perfect. This shows me exactly how they behave while teaching and I'm willing to bet they are significantly more accommodating and more of their students actually like them. Overall, I may have exaggerated slightly by saying Mr. Gustafson is a bad teacher, but he still isn't a good one in my book.

I know some great professors, hell even some of my own mentors when I was in grad school, who seem like complete a dicks from the outside, and maybe there is some truth to it, but as soon as you put in some work to get beyond that, you would find that they are rockstars in their field, and really care about what they teach and as a result find it personally insulting when students don't show that same level of dedication into the course and field of study. Generally, they were also no bs straight to the point people, they were not afraid of calling out students and generally had the experience to back it up. Now I would never judge someone based on one RU-vid video, but just a quick look over of his research and career tells me that he very well could be one of those people, he has the creds to back up his attitude. Not every professor is going to try to be your friend, or even care about your feelings, and some are prideful, as this is their life's work, and many students will walk all over you and your work if you let them, despite the fact that they refuse to work hard enough to succeed.

This is really funny, can you please do this with some Sam Fox professors? People would be very interested in seeing that. I suggest John Early, Pike, Sage Dawson, Or Jaimie Adams. Great work! This is the first time I've ever clicked on a link from the Outlook emails because this concept is awesome

The anthropology professor is doing nothing but to confirm the comments of his students with his attitude. He doesn't handle well criticism. Justified or not, he doesn't process it well, thin skinned.

"Wow this review is from 2011 is almost the exact same as the ones from 2004 and 2015 I must be doing a good job" Like you'd think that if people across 10 years are giving the exact same criticism then maybe you're doing something wrong. He even went on to call their criticism trash because they called him out lmao

These Chemistry teachers seem awesome. I ended up dropping chemistry because we were gonna have to the whole periodic table memorized (lame reason to quit, I know) and our teacher would get sidetracked talking about his personal life for the while class period.... Usually because I intentionally distracted him

I have only had 1 bad professor in college so far and it was business math class that was insanely easy but the teacher constantly got the examples and test questions wrong by their own work. I had a 130% in the class at the end and it was just a confusing mess where I had to help so many people and constantly explain what the professor did wrong
