I've been to at least a dozen snow games living in Western New York and being a fan of the Buffalo Bills. Snow games are some of the best games to go to, including the 4-5 hours of tailgating outside the stadium before the game, and usually an hour more after the game waiting to get out of the parking lot. Between the barbecue, fires, and a few adult beverages while tailgating, everyone keeps pretty warm and has a good time. Usually in Buffalo going to a game is an all day event. There is an RV lot at the stadium that start filling up on Thursdays for the games on Sundays and Monday. If you have the proper gear you're pretty warm all day, and if you live around the teams that get this type of weather most everyone has their winter gear for just such occasions.

Snow doesn't necessarily mean bitterly cold temperatures. Although bitterly cold temperatures don't stop things; look up the Ice Bowl, the 1967 NFL Championship - brutal cold and Green Bay's pioneering subsurface heating system malfunctioned, leaving the field an ice and soil matrix the consistency of concrete.

That playoff game the Chiefs & Dolphins played last year was like -5 at kickoff & -8 by game’s end. There was no snow, as I recall, but it was the 3rd or 4th coldest game. I remember Mahomes’ helmet was so brittle from the cold that it cracked on impact.

You should check out the Kansas City Chiefs vs Miami Dolphins game played on January 13, 2024. It was one of the coldest games on record. The wind chill was -27° F (-32 C). It was so cold that KC’s quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, helmet broke after one play. It shattered due to the cold. And the stands were pretty full with fans. 30 fans were treated at local hospital for frostbite and there were some amputations. Crazy huh!

My wife and I went to a Packers-Lions game at Green Bay, Dec 22, 1990. Lambeau field is an open stadium. No new snow that day. But officially, it was 3 degrees Fahrenheit [-16 C], wind chill 0 Fahrenheit [-18 C], at kickoff. The whole stands were a sea of breath fog. I wore my hunting clothes, boots, double and triple underwear, butt pad. Two ski masks. My breath blew up from inside my ski masks and froze on the inside of my glasses. I went to the bathroom once and cleaned them off, came back to my seat just in time to see Detroit score on a QB draw play, and then I fogged up again. A guy next to me had a giant plastic beer mug. The beer was already slushy-frozen. He knocked it over, it landed upside down at his feet. When he picked the mug back up, the beer just stayed there like a sand castle. Good stiff drink.

I live in North Dakota, one of the coldest states in the US, I can’t imagine playing in this much less sitting in the crowd 🥶 There’s another video compilation about the coldest games ever played. It includes temperatures. Also imagine, for some of these teams, they come from the south where temps are like 95 F or more (35 C) then the next day, going up north and playing in snow, sometimes in the -degrees. It’s such extremes. But also the opposite can be said. Teams use to playing in 65 F (18 C) then have to play in 95 F or more. Some times those temps can be over 100 F (37 C).

NFL games don't stop for weather other than lightning. Recently they have begun rescheduling or relocating games if the forecast a few days in advance suggests that attempting to get to the game will be a public safety hazard, but that's largely limited to hurricanes and actual blizzards. Heavy snow, frigid temperatures, or gusty wind alone isn't enough, though heavy snow and wind together sometimes is. Not sure what the temperatures were in any of the games in this video, but I would guess probably in the -10 to -5 C range (+14 to +23 F) for most. You can't get too much below that and have the real heavy snow; the air simply can't hold enough water for that to happen. There have been games much colder - at least down to -25 C (-13 F), possibly a little lower. In one game, known as the Ice Bowl, it was so cold that the refs stopped using their whistles to avoid having them freeze to their lips!

Just watched your biggest hits video. Last season (I think it was last season or the season before), two major incidents happened that resulted in more rules being changed. Idk much about American Football but, during a Dolphins game, their quarterback Tua suffered a very serious and traumatic concussion. It’s thought that he had one prior to that game but he was medically cleared to play that game. He was convulsing on the field. The NFL doesn’t typically cancel a game for anything, but they did for this. Everyone in that stadium, plus the players, and the viewers at home, adults and kids, all saw this. He’s back to playing again but I think he got another concussion again recently. Then during a Buffalo Bills game, a player by the name of Temar went into cardiac arrest. He miraculously survived and is still playing. My understanding is he got hit just right to trigger this. Even with all the padding, you’re still at high risk for CTE. CTE is what is thought to have contributed to a former NFL player named Aaron Hernandez committing a persons deletion. Problem is, the new rule change makes for some weird flags. But ultimately, I want players to be as safe as they can be in a sport that isn’t very safe to begin with. Long term heath shouldn’t come at the expense of others entertainment. I get this sport is kind of insane, but health of players should still be top priority, even for viewers.

Games are played in extreme cold as well. -10 to even -30 Fahrenheit is not an uncommon thing for NFL in Dec/Jan in some places. In fact the biggest difference for one team from one game to the next was The Chargers in 1981. They beat Miami in Miami and it was in the 80’s F and very humid to the next week losing at Cincinnati where the air temp was -7F and wind chill was in the negative 50F. More than a 90F difference in air temp from one week to the next. It was sunny and windy as hell. We played outside in the snow that day.

Generally the only thing football isn’t played in is lightning. Now a year or two ago Buffalo had a home game that was delayed a day or two due to 5 FEET OF SNOW FORECAST. It was only delayed because the mayor of buffalo and governor of NY said it would impact public safety by taking officers and equipment away from snow removal.

I’m disappointed that the NFL team called Vikings lost to the Seahawks in a blizzard (I’m a Vikings fan)

One year I believe it was Norte Dame played in Miami at 90 degrees and the next week they played at Penn State at -10 degrees. A total of 100 degrees difference in 1 week

Being from Queensland you might not know there are different kinds of snow. There is the wet snow most people know of but then there is powder. If you see them using leaf blowers to move it then it's powder. Powder is light, fluffy and dry.

In many snowy cities they keep open air stadiums thinking the weather will work for them. Statistically a team does do better if they embrace the bad weather. In fact they will do just about as badly as the visiting team. But it does give a slight edge. I personally like open air because it is more traditional. But many crowds do demand more now days.

Once in Georgia we played a high school game in fog so thick I couldn’t see the quarterback when I was playing middle linebacker. No lightning so we had to play on….we lost 6-0 , zero completed passes and we kind of took the referees word on the touchdown since no one else saw it…..I never saw fog like that before or since.
