IIRC it was originally because of fire concerns or other restrictions they couldn't have a fireworks show and so decided this was an appropriate spectacle in it's place. Not 100% sure if that's the backstory but it's a tradition that's gone on for years.
@h.s.lafever3277 I'm from central texas and I've bein lucky to get to spend 3 weeks a year up in yout neck of the woods for the last 4 years elk and attempted moose hunting (I've only landed 3 elk) and a tried ice fishing and I've come to realize if I didn't already have land and a house here in texas ide move up north in a heartbeat yall are possibly one of the most beautiful places on the planet. And ima thinking about coming to see that spectacular event next year
Being an American ..and an Alaskan I have gone to this event. It gets larger each year. I have seen cop cars a small fire truck, buses, an ambulance, a hearse, and a mobile home, and more. It started shortly after 2000 and takes place north of Anchorage, out near Palmer, Alaska. yes they do clean up afterwards. the river I forget is either the Knik or Susitna... primo fishing spots. have fun!
Wait, your from up here and don’t know what river that is even having gone to this event? You can actually see the Matanuska Glacier from there! The Su is way farther south, and the Matanuska flows into the Knik before going into the ocean

I've been watching this for a few years now, and those two landing directly in the pond is the first time I've seen it happen. Seen a few bounce/roll into the pond, never a direct shot until this event.
This tradition in Glacier View, Alaska began in 2003 after a resident of the town collided with a moose while driving a Volvo. Fireworks displays are not an option during Alaskan summers due to the sun never fully setting for the duration of the summer months, which is the reason the town came up with its unique way of celebrating The Fourth of July America's Independence Day.

I was there in 2017, and it was an established tradition in Glacier View, so it's been at least that long. They do it because it's too light in Alaska in the summer for fireworks at any semblance of a reasonable time of day, so this was (naturally) the next logical thing to do.
I was hoping you'd get to see this! The Glacier View July 4th Car Launch Started around 2005 with one van and grew from there. We are weird. The clean up is really done well by the organizers and the souvenir gathers. Nothing left in the end. Looks like the AK State Troopers and the Anchorage PD got involved this year.

Wow, the crowd was HUGE this year - It started as bunch of locals just having some fun but it's exploded. at the end, it's a free for all for anything you can carry out I think. Some bigtime youtuberz have blown it up for a few years now.

Never under estimate the ability of a drunk crowd in the US to make a sport of anything. If you like this, then watch demolition derby, tractor pulls, or Barbie Jeep races. The last one you may want to avoid doing a reaction to. Scantily clad drunk women may get you age restricted. But watch it for yourself.
