Australian Reacts to BF1's Gallipoli Campaign: Historical Breakdown (Battlefield 1 in 2022) 

Imagine you're crawling with your last breaths in the heat of a battlefield and an Aussie crouches next to you and says "Yeah this uniform historically checks out."

I love how Battlefield 1 is the last AAA shooter that cared about a historical setting and was given justice in the most beautiful way possible.

Can we appreciate the fact that most recent showings of Australian troops always put their leaders as shithead British officers, but BF1 shows Whitehall as a flawed officer, but ultimately good man, who respects his Australian troops. Most video games would've had him been like "I sent the men to the fort!" and nixed the "Only those who volunteered," line that makes him much more of a reasonable leader

8:51 - that's the Pedersen Device. It was made to convert the M1903 to a semi-automatic carbine. Thousands were made by the US, but almost all of them were destroyed after WWI. Wasn't made until 1917. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pedersen_device

So! Actually, the armor suit is historically accurate. And it could be surprisingly effective at times! Decent amount of shrapnel protection, and sometimes it even faired well against rifles. The Italians made use of it more with their Arditi units, but the Germans made some for machinegunners to use, specifically for shrapnel protection.

This game gets a lot of hate due to the surface level inaccuracies, but if you look past them, it’s got a remarkable amount of history attached to it. The most fascinating one I found, was the Tanker story. There was a female Mk1 Tank crew during the battle of the Somme (HMLS 13A, We’re All In It!) that punched through German lines, got stuck in an impact crater, and had to send for help. They were stuck fighting off the Germans from inside the tank until the Black Watch showed up to help the survivors. How I actually found the original sources for my college paper five years ago, I have no idea, as the links from the forum I originally discovered the existence of this story no longer work… but I know the after action report exists in some book about WWI tanks, and it’s remarkably similar to what happens in the tanker mission. This game deserves more credit than it gets. No, it’s not really accurate, but it’s authentic, and respects the history despite the liberties it takes. It’s not trying to glorify the war, and it shows how brutal, and pointless the whole conflict was… rather than the historical comedy show that is vanguard.

I'm really happy that you went back to BF1. It's the game that effectively made me interested in history. I Cry every time i see the ending to this war Story or the final ending Cinematic. It migh not be the best game in the series, and might have some macanical problems, but for me, this game is one of the best Games ever made. It did for ww1 what BF5 tried to do with ww2. Before i Played Bf1, never knew of stuff like the Brussilov offensive, the Battle of Passendale, or the Battle of the Somme. To quote "The Act Man": "It made me interested in History (again)" And that's what matters to me.

The real stand-out thing about BF1 even after all these years is the codex. By playing the game and completing challenges you get pages of information about the actual history that the game is based on, from the battles and tactics to the weapons. It is very cool to see how committed to history the team was even with the liberties taken for gameplay and aesthetic reasons. Also, fun fact: When they added Gallipoli-themed maps in a later DLC, they updated the British and Ottoman forces' uniforms on those maps to be more historically accurate.

It should interesting to note: The Vickers actually becomes more accurate overtime as you're laying into the enemy

CORRECTION: HMS Iron Duke is the model for the Dreadnought and she was based in Scapa Flow with Home Fleet at this time. But it is a historically accurate battleship that was in service with the Royal Navy at the time, in fact there were four of them. So, not impossible, plus, saves on assets given they only appear here and as a behemoth in Multiplayer. And its not "inaccurate" per se. Also, noted that in the last mission there was an aircraft I didn't see. That is a Bristol F2B "Bristol Fighter" or "Biff", would not exist yet. BUT, it is a magnificent aircraft.

Later on when the Turing Tides dlc added Cape Helles and Achi Baba to multiplayer, DICE went ahead and remodeled the British faction to give them proper 1915 uniforms. Same thing to the Ottomans.

Thats a Winchester M1895 at 5.23 as used by the Russian Empire . Thankyou C&Rsenal for providing me with that knowledge with their series on the history of small arms used in the war. I also think Forgotten Weapons has done something about these Russian Winchesters . The Russian were sold nearly 300000 by the Winchester Repeating Arms Company .

So you mention that the Warships we see at 6:16-6:18 are correct but having had a look they look to be Iron Duke class ships and none of those were at Gallipoli, in fact the only 'super dreadnought' present at all was Queen Elizabeth along with some of the Battle Cruisers and none of them used a 5x2 centre line gun layout. Most of the Battleships present were the older pre-dreadnoughts that were considered obsolete and could be freed up from other duties to be assigned there. Which in turn lead to one of the main issues with the naval bombardment in that they couldn't elevate the guns high enough to properly bombard a good number of the defensive positions.

it nice seeing anzac history got represented in battlefield one, it's a delight that part of our history and one of our founding moments as a national identity formed as new zealanders

Without having to tell you (since you've realized it in the game), some of the weapons you'll encounter were either prototypes or experimental during WWI but from other nations and like you pointed it out later on in the war. Gun Jesus (look him up) of Forgotten Weapons did mention one of the inaccuracies of the game is not having a gun jam on you when in mud and etc. But he did also say that he understands that if such a feature was in the game, there's a likelihood that frustrated people would not play the game.

I think this is the last AAA title where I had THAT moment I can't remember what there "breakthrough" gamemode was called but I remember there was this one time playing with my 3 friends where, as the whistles were blowing, artillery pounding around us, vehicles engines surging, the new zone opened up, and my squad/the team charged down the hill with the sun at our backs. The music swelled up and I got chills. I miss these kinds of moments and nothing since then has been able to give me that feeling.

The Ottoman Vickers gun is representative of BF1 as a whole for me. Yeah, technically it shouldn't be there, but it's more fun that it is, and it looks absolutely perfect. The history is often set aside for gameplay, but it's still there. It's still respected to a high-ish degree. This game never got the love it deserved, and I'm so glad it is now

even at 43:23 they use the correct Australian flag with the red background instead of blue, I love how much you can tell they cared making this game with tiny details like that.

One thing I really like about Battlefield 1's war stories is that they're just that: stories being recounted at a later date. Any inaccuracies and exaggerations can be attributed to that.

Some notes: The Springfield thing you picked up was an experimental conversion of the Springfield rifle in what i think was 32 ACP. As for why Bishop's uniform looks like ones from the Boer War, its because He did serve in the Boer War, and was part of where his war hero status came from Anywho, I hope you decide to do a video on Storm of Steel

I love BF1. It's not accurate, but it captures a sense of reverence for the source material that most AAA game publishers just don't have anymore. Helps that the game is actually fun too.

the 1903 experimental you picked up at around the 9 minute mark is a 1903 springfield with the Pedersen Device (a replacement bolt that would slide into place after taking out the normal bolt) allowing you to fit a magazine of .45 ACP ammo which you'd use to suppress the enemy as per the walking fire doctrine that was being developed as a means to break the stalemate. It was invented in 1918 to be produced in large enough quantites for the never-to-come-to-be 1919 spring offensives. C&Rsenal have a primer episode about it

So I wish that “thru the mud and blood” was a Canadian tank crew because that is the actual Canadian armoured corps motto (though it would be a bit of inaccurate because Canada did have tank regiments but they didn’t see service)

I have to say, the Runner is probably my favourite War Story, though it could be ties with BF5 The Last Tiger. But as a history nerd, learning about the wars that impacted our world and those who were involved in them really interests me. And as I delve deeper into them I start to find out that Australians have usually made a impact in them too. As a Brit, I look back and I really feel bad for how Australians were treated, I mean I think the whole area of Australia and New Zealand and etc. (Not really great with geography, so not sure what other countries are there), I just think you guys are pretty cool and interesting as a whole. Also, you guys seem to go almost everywhere, I recently found out that Australians were in Vietnam, obviously not as much as the US, but watching the film "Danger Close" really opened my eyes for what Australians have contributed to history. Been watching a few of your videos recently, including the Last Tiger one, and I like the content. As I said, I'm a huge History nerd myself, though I'm probably a bigger fan of WW2 and the war in Europe, mostly the Brits and Americans against Germany, I know a little about the eastern front with Russia but I wouldn't be great in a trivia game about it. The war in Italy, is something I've only just started to learn about. But I'm definitely interested to see what else you bring to your channel.

It's interesting that while in the campaign mission the Australian uniforms are really wrong, but in multiplayer their uniforms are far closer to being accurate.

God I fucking love this game, True, Sometimes it may not be as accurate as it could be, And often it is quite bad in historical accuracy when you look at the details, BUT, Not Being Historically Accurate doesn't always mean a game can't be Fun or Authentic, And Unlike Vanguard, Battlefield 1 has Both of them, And does them REALLY well. Vanguard doesn't do any of them good, But Battlefield 1 manages to be Really Fun, And feel really Authentic at the same time, While also not always being historically accurate, As an example, the Hellriegel is in the game, A gun that there's only one or two Photos to prove it exists, Yet DICE was like "Fuck it, Here you have it, This is what we thought it would Feel like to shoot it!" And I love that, It is unrealistic, Sure, But unlike COD, the Fun and the Authenticity the game provides is enough to allow me to Suspend my Disbelief, Something in Wich Vanguard fails beyond words.

BF1 literally made me care for World History class back in high school. I'm actually glad too that during that time, BF1 was also coming out, and one of the projects I've done for WH was for Kaiserschlacht. BF1 gave me "some" background but did literal research on the event itself

Can confirm, Canadians may be known for being polite and all that jazz, but we're the last people you want to see assaulting/inside your bunker or town. It's the polite/quiet ones you've gotta watch out for.

I love this mission, and the campaign for this game a lot. It may be as inaccurate *as* Vanguard at times, but it's definitely authentic, and incredibly respectful to their history. Instead of shoving forced, fake, 'woke' culture down your throat, they give you beautifully written summaries of historical events, and let you play as historical minorities without even telling you, such as the Harlem Hellfighters in the first prologue of the campaign, and the British and other European colonial troops in the multiplayer. Even the small details like the models of weapons, background noises of combat, NATIVE LANGUAGE SPEAKING, and even just the mud, blood and grime that smears your equipment when you move around just makes this game one of my favorite historical, casual FPS games to go in and have fun in.

I loved this game. I just wished they gave some more love into the campaign with a few more war stories. Like the Canadians at Vimy Ridge, or maybe the fighting in Serbia.

I think you would love Through Mud and Blood. It is amazing and badass as fuck even though they get a major thing wrong, and that being the size of the crew for the Mark 4

The 1903 Experimental was a real thing. It was a modification for a Springfield called a Pedersen Device, basically you take the bolt out, drop in the device and it turns the springfield into a .30-18 Auto carbine. However, the inaccuracy part is in that it didn't exist at the time of this mission. It was designed in 1917 and didn't enter production until December 1918. And the cool part was you could very easily convert the rifle back to firing .30-06, which they did after the Pedersen lost out to the Garand in semiautomatic rifle trials. Nice to see cool things like that get a little bit of limelight.

The sight on smle is based on martin galilean sight. The lever action gun is Winchester m1895 mainly used by Russians. While the semi auto Springfield is m1903 with pedersen device firing .30-18 auto also known as 7.65x20 longue similar to .32 acp. The cup type grenade launcher is attached to Winchester model 1907 chambered in .351 wsl used by both France and Britain. The top magzine feed lmg used by the Turkish forces is madsen machine gun (m1925, 26, 35 and 1937 models) chambered in 7.92mm

Even with all the inaccuracies the game felt like WW1, its period correct in a way that doesnt really match others cause its also fun on top of being as accurate as possible. Many people will state issues with it and its multiplayer but nobody cant deny the kind of atmosphere the game created with its setting.

Yes the 1903 is goofy but it was real prototype rifle developed for the us army its called the Pederson device

One thing to note as well is in Multiplayer the Ottomans were in fact given their historically accurate uniform (Khaki) and featured mostly Historically accurate Anzacs on the Map Called Acchi Baba probably spelt that wrong, anyhow take a look!

This game was made 5 years ago and is doing astronomically better than some games taking historical settings that are horrendously incorrect that it can actually make you sick. This game shines through all the dirt as an older and more valuable gem.

You should do a historical breakdown of the BF1 war story "Avanti Savoia". It is my favorite war story because it is the only one I know so far that features the Italians. It is also a positive representation of the Italian Army in WWI because in this war story, you get to play as a volunteer in the Arditi, an elite shocker unit in the Italian Army during WW1. This war story also features the Austro-Hungarian Army along with some wrong but unique weapons.

More of these breakdown/playthroughs of BF1 PLEASE. So good! I would love it if you would play the British Flying Corps war story in BF1. One of my favorites.

There were several times while playing multiplayer that id just sit at the redeploy screen and listen to the soundtrack while in the background were the sounds of intense combat, especially on the In the name of the tsar maps. Battlefield 1 was truly an amazing battlefield and i tied for my favorite with 4.

The idea was during an attack on an enemy trench a soldier could remove the bolt and replace it with the Pederson device, and now the rifle fires pistol ammunition semi-automatically. The war ended before any could be fielded, but it was a real thing.

Though- I'd say the one thing that always makes me sad when seeing Gallipoli presented in media, specifically the retreat at Sulva Bay, is the absence of (typically from lack of knowledge about) the original 1000 man Newfoundlander regiment sent by Canada to assist the Australians advance (nicknamed the blue Puttees) , who after facing massive losses during assaults (255 killed, 356 wounded, 61 lost), a tragedy that even Henry de Beauvoir De Lisle had commented on saying - "‘It was a magnificent display of trained and disciplined valour, and its assault only failed of success because dead men can advance no further’ - with only 68 men answering the roll call, they had been one of many tasked with holding their ground to stall enemy advancements, losing a number of the surviving men in the process. Dude, 8:49 I think this is a Springfield 1903 with a Pedersen device! It really was a thing, but it was developed for the Spring 1919 offensive, that never came.

The thing on the Springfield 1903 the Pedersen device, basically you switch you bolt of the device which a small semi automatic .45ACP blow back receiver, allowing US troop to have a 30+ round semi auto rifle that work well in trench combat. They were designed but never saw combat in the war, at the time they were going to beused in the planned 1919 spring offensive, but as we know the war ended in the Winter of 1918

Only loading five rounds into the SMLE is historically accurate, articles and training manuals said the men should only load five rounds to save the stress on the magazine spring. People would have loaded 10 for sure, but it was common practice for soldiers to only load in 5.

Battlefield 1 was one of those games where you could tell the artists took pride and accountability for what they made, and good god did they make a work of art.

There's an extra treat in the credits of BF1 for you Australians if you finish all the campaigns. Once you've done them all, there's an extra section called "Remember Us" followed by the credits. Watch them, you won't be disappointed. Also, bring some tissue

Gallipoli is pretty much have the same effect on us Turks too, it was a huge morale boost to the Turkish soldiers during the War of Independence and more importantly it gave us our founding father Mustafa Kemal (Later Atatürk) This battle later on named "Last Gentlemans War" because of how the ANZACs and Turkish soldiers become closer and friends after the first ceasefire, i'm glad after the war we kept that friendship by giving the huge care on ANZAC memorials and graves just like our own.

Probably someone covered this before me, but there was actually only one British dreadnought present at Gallipoli. HMS Queen Elizabeth. The battleships sent in the Dardanelles were the older pre dreadnoughts that were considered second rate ships and disposable, so having them get sunk to mines or submarines wasn't as bad. The dreadnoughts were needed anyway to enforce the naval blockade of Germany and keep the German fleet in check.

At 9:03 that is the Pederson Device on the M1903 Springfield file. It was real and used, but obviously very anachronistic in 1915.
