The most modern tanker fleet and other commercial vessels ended up as vessels for the allied. During the Battle of Britain, 40% of the fuel for RAF was transported on Norwegian keel. Nearly 4000 Norwegian sailors perished in german u-boat attacks on our convoys. Churchill paid the sailors a salary for their service for NORTRASHIP (google it) but the Norwegian government held back those funds for decades after the war. Thank you for doing this. It's utterly baffling how many mention "USA" and/or "Britain" when talking about "saving" the USSR with lend lease but not a single fart mentions NORTRASHIP. The convoys would not be able to send even a _fraction_ of what they did over the North Sea. Not even remotely. Even our own nations did not do proper recognition and reimbursement (just some, WAY later).
