Hi Shane, nice to hear you enjoyed Waitpinga it is a nice beach, catching a fish is always good but also good having a go. both of my son in laws went down there 2 weeks ago before sun rise and caught 3 nice salmon just over 1kg and a couple of small ones and once the sun had come up the fish were gone usually the way down there this time of the year, there were a lot of salmon trout at Parsons beach earlier this week. Amazing beach. Went there today for the first time as on a business trip in Adelaide. Watched this video before and forgot about rocks mentioned, well as a result got my line snagged bhahahhaha. Fished on metals. Got 6 fish, supposedly salmon, well by the look of it, and lost all 6 when getring them to the shore. This spot with rocks is awesome for catching fish but not sure how to bring them in. Water movement is way to strong and they unhook themselves.
@davidsheldonfishing9726
@davidsheldonfishing9726 4 месяца назад
High Pavel good to hear from you again, it is a nice beach isn't it. Yes it is good fishing near them rocks but always get snagged eventually because of the currents I caught some nice fish there last winter including a nice bream on cockle. I haven't made a video for a while but I have planes for a lure video eventually. I use to have a lot of trouble with salmon coming off at the edge on lures we started to use 2 treble hooks on the same split ring or a hook and a treble or a single hook can help or 2 hooks, also if you remove the split ring and thread your line through both eyes on your lure and tie your treble directly onto your line when the salmon shakes its head the weight of the lure won't help the hook to come out. All the best next time

Hi, David. Thanks for sharing. Winter months are hard for land based fishing, I went to outer harbour yesterday for mullets, caught nothing, but 3 weeks ago I caught 47 decent sized mullets from same spot. How do you cook the Salmon trout? I feel the salmon taste not good compare the other fish. Cheers.
@davidsheldonfishing9726
@davidsheldonfishing9726 6 лет назад
Howdy Trin glad to share mate. Yes winter can be a bit harder, good to hear you caught a good bag of mullet three weeks ago, but not yesterday I guess thats fishing can be up and down. When this weather settles down if you already haven't tried have a look at your local jetties for some Tommy ruff and try a burley pot on a rope half full with the burley mix I mentioned and use a paternoster rig with just a burley spring size 8 hook and try same method off the beach but with a small sinker as well as a burley spring. I like my salmon cooked in panko crumbs or bread crumbs and I like battered and I love to make fish cakes and fish curry and sometimes shallow fried in sweet chilli sauce

G,day guys, the bigger salmon can taste a bit funny but a young chap said to me to poach the salmon fillets in milk, I thought he was having a joke with me but he said it was awesome so I tried it and now I take them home to cook in milk, for some reason it takes that tast away and makes the fish really nice. Give it ago and see for yourself. Yum.

Hi Rodney, thank you for watching and nice to hear you like the way I fish. David, that was an awesome session. Can’t believe how many you’ve caught.. that would have been a lot of fun. Are the cockles just the ones you buy from coles? Went beach worming today, caught about 19 but man the water was so cold.. don’t think I’ll be worming again in Winter, but would love to catch that many fish at the beach..
@davidsheldonfishing9726
@davidsheldonfishing9726 6 лет назад
Gday CJ Hobbies sure was a fun session and fantastic conditions.The cockles[or pippies] I'm using are from the tackle shop and professionally collected on Goolwa beach and the Coorong beaches. They are now also distributed around the country and the world for food which has made them quite expensive,so there's a good chance they are the same as the ones you have in Coles.I reckon if you try the same fishing rig as myself maybe lighter line but definitely a burley spring with pilchards but use your worms instead of cockles you may be pleasantly surprised, and you did make me laugh when you mentioned how cold the water was, get yourself a pair of wet suit gloves and cut off the top fingers you use for worming that will help all the best man.
@creationbakery535
@creationbakery535 6 лет назад
David Sheldon Fishing Hey mate, thanks for your reply. Gotta really give that Berle spring a go, I do have a few but they are too small. Went out yesterday for a fish with the worms, caught a huge 43cm whiting and 4 others.. didn’t think whiting came out in Winter which was a surprise. How do you make your own Berley springs?
@davidsheldonfishing9726
@davidsheldonfishing9726 6 лет назад
My pleasure CJ Hobbies. Wow thats a whopper yellowfin and 4 others well done, them worms are like gold aren't thay. Ok burley spring get yourself a piece of threaded rod 12cm or 15cm long and 2cm thick a pair of pliers and some galvanised wire not to bendy or to think, stainless migweld wire is best and simply copy a bought small one I recon you will be good at it. I think I will do a youtube on how to make a burley spring. its very satisfying making your own stuff all the best mate.

Hi Eddie the reason I will keep my bag limit of salmon trout. is because I really don't get out fishing as much as I would like to these days and fish in highly regarded as a table fish at my house, so a few stored in the freezer doesn't go astray. but we are allowed 10 bigger ones over 35cm and I do limit how many of them I keep depending on there size. the smaller ones are so yum. great comment showing your concern. @davidsheldonfishing9726
@davidsheldonfishing9726 6 лет назад
Hi Iun thank you. I am glad you enjoyed the video. I am glad you had success catching smaller salmon using the burley spring with pilchard it definitely helps,I have caught a lot of larger salmon down at waitpinga but they don't come along often up to around a kilo can be more common and the bigger ones a bit less common. you would have more chance of the bigger fish just before day break in good conditions and the same when it goes dark. But in saying that fish are full of surprises. Keep fishing the way you are but maybe more so with pilchards for bait as well as for burley and you will get a big one eventually, and wow do thay fight. My friend caught a couple near 4kg last winter very early morning. Its hard for me to arrange to go fishing with people these days because of time and it's very much a spure of the moment when the time is right, you might see me down there sometime say hello if you do thank you Iun all the best mate and tight lines.

@davidsheldonfishing9726
@davidsheldonfishing9726 5 лет назад
Hi Hanoi. Reading the beach and trying to predict where the fish might be, plays a important part to beach fishing. Winter can be rewarding for fishing, salmon become more abundant along our coast line and Tommy ruffs from local jettys and mullet also fish like king George whiting and snapper can move in close to shore looking for food after rough weather. There can be good fishing during winter.

Hi David great video. 2 questions mate. 1. Is this a particular month or season or you can catch this many all year round? 2. is there any good locations like this closer to Adelaide? 3. Will chicken do fine for bait if u dont have cockle?
@davidsheldonfishing9726
@davidsheldonfishing9726 4 года назад
Hi Mahdi, Waitpinga can fish good Spring through to Autumn but can have supprises during the summer, the best surf beach near to Adelaide is South Port beach and can be very good during the winter late afternoon also night time and early morning. Christies beach and O'sullivans beach can be worth a look for schools of salmon some times. There are laws about using meat or chicken for burley but used as small hook bait there shouldn't be a problem, chicken is a good bait used by alot of fishos well worth a go, try putting some garlic powder and curry powder on some to try. I have never tryed chicken only mince but well worth a try, lots of fish like chicken.

Hi David, great videos! Ive just moved over here from NSW. Was wondering if you ever get Tailor at Waitpinga or other beaches. What are chances of Mulloway - is it a very elusive fish here? Must you use live bait or will pilchards suffice? It's just coming up April now - is there a cut off point where you stop fishing for the winter as it gets slow? Thanks mate.
@davidsheldonfishing9726
@davidsheldonfishing9726 4 года назад
Hi Graeme, Thank you! Tailor in SA are rare I have only ever heard of them being caught at Waitpinga beach, Tunkalilla beach and the far west coast, Waitpinga beach has produced some very big ones 4-7kg for a few lucky fishos on lures at the eastern end of the beach low tide you can get out on the reef down there and the head land between Waitpinga and Parsons has produced a few but take care it can be dangerous down there. I have caught a small one of Waitpinga on my salmon rig also 2 of Tunkalilla beach fishing for mulloway on pilchard one was near 5kg. There are Mulloway all along our coast especially the Murray mouth October through to the end of summer where lots can be caught lure fishing when the fishing is hot but care should be taken there, people wade out in wet suits to stand and fish of the sand bars to reach the fish and use lures, bait fishing is from the beach(a bit to learn down there). Off the beaches we use live bait, squid, pilchard, it all produces fish, The screw pile jetty can produce mulloway also Waitpinga and parsons winter time when there are salmon trout or mullet schooling and live bait is the go, also salmon fire up during our winter time at Waits and Parsons. All the best Graeme hope this has helped mate, Cheers David. P.S Salt creek is a hot spot too.

Gr8 vid mate, watched ur vids about a year ago and watching them again today. Question; doesn't the burley spring act as a sinker already? Seems like you got a lot of weight on there? Cheers
@davidsheldonfishing9726
@davidsheldonfishing9726 4 года назад
Hi Bert, thank you for watching. yes the burley spring does add a bit of extra weight but it's ok if the tackle used is adequate enough to handle it, if it was being used in very calm conditions its possible to use without a sinker attached. The benefits using the burley spring far out weigh than not using one at all. Cheers David

Awesome Video, does it matter if it's low tide or high tide for Salmon? Also how effective is Squid for catching Salmon? Thinking of going out this weekend, Cheers
@davidsheldonfishing9726
@davidsheldonfishing9726 4 года назад
G'day Johnny, no the tide doesn't so much matter for salmon its the time of day thats most important which is before sun up and up until the sun gets to high and late afternoon also during the night. some times you can catch salmon throughout the day but these days are normally overcast and gloomy. Salmon move into shore during the night( beaches and rocks) for safety after feeding during the day in deeper water. Yes squid will catch salmon, large salmon love squid heads with guts still on also very small whole squid. Tenderised squid cut into pieces also marinate with mushed up pilchard and add caught fish blood while fishing. hope that helps Johnny. Cheers David

I have had the jacket for years its interstructable and extremely light weight and can be folded very small to fit in your bag. Its made by Stockrider weather ware and called stockrider nylon coat and all one piece not cheap but I would recommend.

HI David, Just wondering what the dimensions of your paternoster rig is? Looks like the 2 droppers coming of the main branch are about 30 cm long. I noticed also rather than tying the droppers directly to the line they are sort of connected via a loop. Any chance you could detail how they’re connected if you find time? Also just wondering about the fish bag you throw over your shoulder. Is that a home made thing or is that something you could buy in a tackle shop?
@davidsheldonfishing9726
@davidsheldonfishing9726 5 лет назад
G'day Robert I've never measured my rig before, but I have now. Between the top swivel and the burley spring swivel it measures 110cm long, 20cm below the top swivel is my first dropper loop, 50cm below that is my second droper loop and then 40cm below that is my burley spring and sinker. Yes I tie my hook snoods separately with a reasonable length to allow more bait movement, and joined loop to loop to make my paternoster rig. top snood for pilchard is 45cm including both loops, its a bit longer to allow for the half hitch around the pilchards tail and the bottom snood for cockle is 35cm. I hope that helps maybe I should do a video on that. My shoulder bag is a old pillow case and the strap is a old bag strap with them dog collar clips on, I have used thin rope plenty of times, and you probably noticed my milk bottle bait holders. All cheap, good enough and recycled.

David Sheldon Fishing Thanks so much for the info David. It’s good to get different views on how the rig should be tied. I’m never sure myself. That pillow case is a great idea. I was thinking of using some hessian bags myself. Just have to work out how to sow or attach the straps to the bag as we don’t own a sowing machine. I suppose I could do it by hand or take it to someone to get it done on a machine. Love how you’ve re-used stuff and how you make your own barley springs. I made my first two up yesterday thanks to your video on that. I have seen them before but did not realise how they were used till I saw your videos.

Hi Shaun, I have had this question before are you ready for the answer, I pinched a pillow case out of the linen cupboard without the wife seeing me and took the strap off a old shoulder bag which also belonged to the wife (only kidding) but seriously it is just a old pillow case and is very good. I just give it a rince after fishing. just grab another old one when this one wears out, and the shoulder strap is a old shoulder bag strap, I have use all kinds of stuff for a shoulder strap. I don't buy anything unless I have too. thank you for watching and commenting Shaun. I live over near Waitpinga beach.

Hi mate. Just a quick question please. Why didn't you use a burley bag like in the vid I'd see of you on Parsons beach? Cheers
@davidsheldonfishing9726
@davidsheldonfishing9726 5 лет назад
G'day Abel van Wyk. When I'm just chasing salmon or smaller salmon at Waitpinga or Parsons I'm happy to just use a burley spring with pilchard in it. But when I would like to catch some mullet like I did at Parsons a burley bag can work a treat by congregating the mullet right in front of you, but in saying that a burley bag is good to use in all situations attracting a wide variety of fish to your fishing location. It can start the food chain going attracting the smaller fish and then the larger ones. i.e. mulloway, shark, Cheers David

@davidsheldonfishing9726
@davidsheldonfishing9726 6 лет назад
Gday mate yes bleeding your fish blood into your pippies [cockles] or pilchards is definitely a good thing to do to improve your catch, but using a burley spring is even better like I do in the video also the place you choose to fish plays an important part. Try these suggestions and your catch will improve. Some days when we go fishing it seems we can't do anything wrong but others we need to pull all the tricks out of the bag. Thank you for the question and tight lines.

@davidsheldonfishing9726 5 лет назад
Gday mate thank you for your message, I've never heard any body say the language of the waves before, yes as well as us looking and reading the beach, in a way they are telling us where the best places to fish are. Good question about the pilchards they are bought uncooked fresh frozen from the tackle shop in small packets or in a 2kg whats called a block of pilchards. they generally come from Western Australia also Port Lincoln, mainly southern waters I think. also get netted other places around the world. Pilchards are called sardines when we eat them.

@@davidsheldonfishing9726 Haha I was feeling whimsical. You have a very informative channel, much appreciated. Have you got a video on Snook? I hear they are harder to catch. I am new to fishing, and am looking at buying my first rod. I was looking at the Ugly Stick GX2 Casting Rod and the Shimano Nasci 1000 Reel, can you attest to these products or there companies in the fishing arena? And more importantly will this rod and reel combo put up with Snook? I mainly want to catch Tommies; my fav, Mullet, Gar, Whiting and Snook :) I went with this combo because it is cheap. But would appreciate any advice.
@davidsheldonfishing9726
@davidsheldonfishing9726 5 лет назад
Hi Laughing man. That rod and reel sounds good for starting out with, Ugly Stick fishing rods have been around for years and have a fantastic reputation, also Shimano reels very good, you can get some pretty good reels these days for a good price. That outfit will be very good for gar whiting and tommies, even trout, carp etc. The rod and reel will defiantly handle snook, if you were fishing of rocks a rod a touch longer would be better. In saying that, that combo will always be very useful even if you do get a longer rod later on. I Would recommend 12lb braid, better for casting lures because you want to use it for snook, and simply use 6lb, 8lb leader or trace when fishing for the other species. you will need a crab net for lowering of the jetty to help land your snook. I plan to do a snook video, you will catch snook on very small mental lures and small hard bodied lures the colour of baitfish, silver, blue, green. Also frog mouth pilchards white bait rigged with size 4 or 2 hooks on rig with a small running sinker slowly retrieved. best times late afternoon and anywhere the garfish are.hope that gets you on the right track future fisho.
