@marxfishing

High tide is usually best for the beach’s, sun rise and sunset are also generally good. I mostly prefer metals for salmon, generally if they are around they will be easy to catch. It’s more a case of finding them, just keep moving.

Nice! Just came across your channel. Any tips for salmon sashimi prep?
@marxfishing
@marxfishing 5 лет назад
Yep. Bleed and then ice them, the sooner the better. Then fillet, skin, and bone them. For the sashimi cuts, slice the flesh against the grain at a 45% or so angle. (so make your sashimi cuts width wise on the fish, so cut bum to back, not head to tail). Great as sashimi, sushi, or poke (google poke if your'e not familiar with it). It's all best eaten the same day, or within 24 hours. Hope that helps. As as side note, a fish that almost no one eats, but if treated this way is the best sashimi you will ever eat, is tailor.
@karlosj83
@karlosj83 5 лет назад
@@marxfishing sashimi tailor! Never thought of that! Thanks for the tips! Last question, with the salmon, to you take any notice of the difference in meat colour, ie the dark meat or the white meat?
@marxfishing
@marxfishing 5 лет назад
Yah, I think I trimmed the darker meat out, when I first started doing them, but I don’t bother anymore. I’m not convinced there is enough difference in texture and flavour to bother. This may vary fish to fish through. Maybe try if both ways and see if you can taste any difference.

Just ordered some lures after watching this! Any tips on where to cast in the surf and the speed on retrieval?
@marxfishing
@marxfishing 4 года назад
Typically you look for gutters in the surf, but I generally just walk the beach and cast. Just vary the speed, I try to bring the lure in at a speed fast enough to keep it off the bottom, but not skipping along the surface. If the fish are there, you will generally get them, with almost any retrieve, the key is finding them. Do some searching online, and check out the fishing reports, try to find beaches that are known for holding salmon. As a rule, fishing high tide is good too, but not always critical.

Marx Fishing legend! Heading out to 90 mile beach this weekend so I’ll do some walking about and down the beach! Never had any luck on any lure in my life so praying for some luck!
@marxfishing
@marxfishing 4 года назад
You should be in with a chance there. Keep yourself light, don’t carry too much gear, and just walk the beach. Small backpack or hip bag is ideal. Look for the gutters, usually good ones down there, and sometimes the gutter and fish will be right close to shore, like right at your feet, so don’t ignore them. Best of luck! I love that area, I used to camp down there, and fish for sharks, 20 years ago, such a great spot.

Nice vids mate very informative. If I'm doing beach and surf fishing what size rod and reel do you recommend? I was thinking 8ft with 4000 reel? Based in Victoria.
@marxfishing
@marxfishing 5 лет назад
I like a 9ft rod, it’s seems to be a good all rounder. For the reel, I think either a 3000 or 4000 reel. The setup I used in the video was 9ft rod, 3000 reel, and it makes for a really nice lightweight beach setup. The thing with the reels now, is that the drag system in a 2500 to 3000 size reel is better than the 4000-6000 reels, from only a few years ago. When picking a reel, have a good look at drag specs, I think that’s more important than reel size now a days.
@Spartakus_1
@Spartakus_1 5 лет назад
@@marxfishing hey mate thanks for the response I was looking at going for a 8ft rod with 3000 or 4000 reel will this suffice as an all rounder for beach, rock and pier fishing
@marxfishing
@marxfishing 5 лет назад
Totally, if you want or use the rod for piers too, then 8 ft can be a good compromise. I use 7ft off the jetties, and 9 ft for beach and rock. So the 8 ft sits right in the middle of that and should be good for covering everything.
@Spartakus_1
@Spartakus_1 5 лет назад
@@marxfishing awesome loads of people saying bigger is better and saying I should go 11ft or 12ft with 5000 to 6500 reels which I feel may be an overkill. With the 8ft if a catch a large ray or gummy or jewie will it have enough power in it? This is my first setup and still new to things so was looking at the following rod Daiwa Laguna-X 802MFS Spinning Rod Black 8 ft with a Daiwa BG 3000/4000 Spinning Reel. What do you think?
@marxfishing
@marxfishing 5 лет назад
For the rod, anything that is graphite and will cast 1/4-1/2 oz well will work. Those BG reels look awesome, I would compare the size, weight and smoothness with the the Shimano Sedona and see why you think. To be honest I fish mostly with a combo that cost me less than $100. The fish don’t know the difference.

I have always wanted to try doing the fish cakes. Unknown to most people, Aussie Salmon are great sushi and sashimi, you must bleed them immediately, keep them on ice, and eat them in the next few hours. Tailor is the same, excellent sashimi. We have been eating them this way for years. You have to know how to cut the fish up property for sashimi as well.
@thomascatlin606
@thomascatlin606 4 года назад
Marx Fishing haha well there you go. I’ll defs give it a crack I’ll try anything once (nearly anything haha) tell you what’s divine... soak some tailor fillets in brown sugar/ chilli/ salt and splash of water to mix them all in. Soak them overnight and then smoke them with applewood/cherrywood (not a fan of hickory for fish it’s too strong) for half hour > two hours depending on how hot your smoker runs. Sooooo good
@marxfishing
@marxfishing 4 года назад
Thomas Catlin, I love smoke tailor, I have not tried the brown sugar and such, sounds awesome. If you are going to try one fish as sashimi, I would say try the tailor over the salmon. Bleed straight away, into ice slurry. Fillet as nominal, then cut thin slices again the grain/muscle of the fish. Melts if your month, best if done within hours of catching, wasabi, soy sauce, and pickled ginger to add in if you like. Anyone who likes sushi will love this. The reason they they can’t sell it commercially like this is that the oil content in the flesh causes it to turn to mush within about 24 hours, but if eaten with hours of being caught, it is the best you will even have.

The amount of people that thought they were "yuck" also until I showed them what they were doing wrong and now love eating them even more than snapper is laughable, the stigma is losing traction, and its about time.
